Bone-free jeoneo hoe for 3 with spicy ramyeon: Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha
In short
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Gwangju Wolsan Branch is a seasonal raw fish pocha near Mudeung Market in Nam-gu, Gwangju. Three servings of bone-free jeoneo hoe (gizzard shad sashimi) came with the restaurant's newly added ramyeon menu, plus generous basic side dishes like self-cooked buchimgae and grilled fish. Aside from a few tiny bones left in the jeoneo hoe, it's a comfortable spot to enjoy seasonal raw fish.

This is Hyessaem, and I aim for honest reviews. I visited Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, a raw fish restaurant in Wolsan-dong, Gwangju! It's a spot I'd recommend as a Mudeung Market raw fish restaurant — it's only been open about 3 months, but it's consistently busy and has plenty of tables, making it a great Wolsan-dong raw fish spot for groups too.
There's no dedicated parking lot, but there were surprisingly many spots in the alley behind the store, so it was easy to park and visit.
Let me start my review of Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan Branch, a Wolsan-dong raw fish restaurant in Gwangju where you can try seasonal menus and even enjoy the healthy hamo (pike conger eel) shabu-shabu!

Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, a raw fish restaurant near Mudeung Market in Wolsan-dong, Gwangju — watch out, seasonal menus sell out
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, the Wolsan-dong raw fish restaurant in Gwangju, is popular for its seasonal menus! Last time I came for live squid, it sold out right in front of me, ㅠ so I couldn't have it... This time I didn't have a particular fish in mind, but I visited planning to order whatever looked good between the assorted sashimi platter and jeoneo hoe (gizzard shad sashimi).
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan Branch in Gwangju had its outdoor fish tanks cleanly maintained, and it was pretty crowded. Since the tables are numerous and spacious, a lot of people come for gatherings or family meals. Shrimp had just come into season too, so there were people bringing their kids for grilled shrimp!
Inside the restaurant
I sat in the same seat as last time again! The table spacing was wide and the air was kept fresh and comfortable at Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, the Mudeung Market raw fish restaurant. I wanted shrimp too, but I gave in to jeoneo hoe this time haha.
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan Branch's menu — a new ramyeon menu appeared

The family at the next table was having hamo shabu-shabu — but it seems to have sold out in the meantime! Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan Branch is nice because you can pick from various options in the main menu, like grilled salted king shrimp, raw shrimp sashimi, jeoneo, and assorted sashimi.

I'm not great with fish sashimi that has bones ㅠ so honestly I usually dislike jeoneo, but since they said they'd prepare it bone-free, I gave it another try. Actually, even bone-free, small bones kept catching in my mouth — I wish there was a menu that mixed jeoneo with regular sashimi..!
There's a wide variety of other menu items, so I recorded them on video — and there's now a ramyeon menu that wasn't here before! Since it's shrimp season, there was even shrimp ramyeon, which apparently you could also get through a review event. I didn't know it was available through the review event, so I just ordered a plain ramyeon and ate it lol.
What do the basic side dishes look like? Self-cooked buchimgae and grilled fish

Here's what the basic side dish setup looked like! They used to pan-fry the buchimgae (savory pancake) for you, but now it's self-service — we cooked it up twice :) The grilled fish here is herring I think..? It also has some small bones, so I don't usually eat it much, but it's tasty so it's a side dish I pick apart persistently to get at the fish haha.
Bone-free jeoneo hoe for 3 — how were the tiny bones?

We were going to just order 2 servings of jeoneo hoe, but since it had been a while, we ordered 3! It was quite a lot, but somehow everyone finished it all lol. I honestly barely ate any..!

I ordered the bone-free jeoneo hoe, but there were still a few small bones left! They say this is about as bone-free as it gets, so I guess it's just personally not a great match for me with jeoneo hoe 😭. It seemed like the jeoneo had been in season for a while too, so if you want to try seasonal jeoneo hoe, head to Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, the Mudeung Market raw fish restaurant in Wolsan-dong ~~
Ramyeon to go with the sashimi
I ordered the regular ramyeon instead of the shrimp one, and the broth was cooked up quite spicy and delicious! The one with shrimp seemed like it'd be tasty too, but this one paired well with the jeoneo hoe.

There was plenty of broth too, so besides the seaweed soup that comes as a basic side when you're having soju with sashimi, this was a perfect extra to go with the meal~
If you're looking for a raw fish restaurant in Wolsan-dong, Gwangju, or a Mudeung Market raw fish restaurant, I recommend Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan Branch in Gwangju — full of seasonal menus, generous basic side dishes, and a comfortable environment to eat well in~!
