Fresh fruit mochi lunchbox at Hwayangyeonhwa, a Sunchang hanok café

I tried the fresh fruit chapssaltteok at Hwayangyeonhwa, a hanok café in Sunchang with such a relaxed vibe, and the combination of chewy soft mochi with sweet fresh fruit was so, so good!

Parking at this Sunchang café favorite is in the courtyard, and if it's full there's a public parking lot within 50m, so no worries there.

Hwayangyeonhwa turned out to be made up of several hanok buildings.

Inside, you take off your shoes and enjoy drinks and desserts at floor tables — it was spacious with plenty of tables. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, and there's definitely a comfort that a hanok gives. It even reminded me of my grandma's old house, haha. Such a great layout for coming with kids too, lol.

This space allowed pets. Inside, it was full of guests with their dogs, and since it's a standing-table area where you don't have to take off your shoes, it looked comfortable to enjoy.

There was also a short bamboo path that made a great photo spot — atmospheric and nice.

Order here! The menu at this Sunchang café favorite is varied — bingsu, chapssaltteok, croissants, ades, juices, coffee, lattes, tea, and more.

They also sold oranda and traditional sweets like hangwa, and you could see the fresh fruit used in the desserts, haha.

How many fresh fruit mochi flavors are there?

What I was most curious about was definitely the chapssaltteok — mochi is trending these days, right?! Haha.

This Sunchang café favorite sells all sorts of flavored chapssaltteok, and apparently theirs is really that good, lol. Even at a glance, the variety is seriously wide! There were even more flavors beyond what's shown in the picture.

Here's the lineup on the day I visited:

• Tiramisu mochi, cream cheese strawberry mochi
• Cherry mochi, cheonhyehyang (a citrus variety) mochi, fig mochi
• Tangerine mochi, shine muscat mochi
• Gold kiwi mochi, cherry tomato mochi
• Sweet red bean chestnut
• Fresh strawberry mochi, matcha red bean butter mochi

That's what they had.

There was also a mochi lunchbox, with half-portions of various flavors — great for tasting a bit of everything, haha.

Box packaging was also available, so it'd make a great gift too. Any dishes you need are self-service here!

Tasting all six mochi flavors in the lunchbox

What I ordered was the mochi lunchbox, oranda, chocolate latte, and a total of 6 chapssaltteok flavors: cherry, fresh strawberry, shine muscat, whole gold kiwi, tangerine, and what I thought was chocolate but turned out to be tiramisu.

A mochi lunchbox where you can taste several flavors at once! Such a great setup, haha. Each mochi's hanji-paper color matched its flavor too, so pretty and cute, lol.

The label said 'chocolate mochi,' so my son picked it, but the inside was white — chocolate? Oh, must be white chocolate! But it didn't really taste like chocolate, more like something I'd had before... Turns out, checking the receipt later at home, it was tiramisu mochi, lol. Anyway, it was delicious, lol.

I thought strawberries wouldn't be around since it's still hot out, but they had them!! And the sweetness was insane... genuinely sweeter and tastier than midwinter strawberries!!

The gold kiwi was bursting with juice! This place is a fruit powerhouse. All the fruit was sweet and delicious...!! The cheonhyehyang was also packed with juice!! The red bean paste was tasty too, and the rice cake itself was so chewy, soft, and smooth, lol.

The shine muscat's sweetness was also insane. My son said this one was his favorite.

Cherry tomato in a mochi — doesn't sound like it'd work, right?? That's what I thought, but this ended up being my top pick..!!!! No wait, strawberry is my top pick! Okay, tied for top pick!! Lol. It was way more delicious than expected, lol. The cherry tomato itself was a genuinely good one, sweet and tasty, and it paired so well with the mochi, lol.

This one's a classic, so of course it was good, lol — the red bean paste and the rice cake itself are just tasty.

So colorful, and just looking at them makes you happy, haha. I'm so glad there's this kind of delicious fresh fruit mochi nearby.

The chocolate latte was sweet and tasty too. The mochi was seriously soft and chewy, T_T. It was the tastiest chapssaltteok I've had in my life. The soft, chewy texture of the rice cake itself was just so good!!

An easy stop on a Sunchang trip

Hwayangyeonhwa, this Sunchang café favorite, let me relax and heal in a quiet hanok while enjoying delicious desserts! The tangy sweetness of the fresh fruit blended so well with the soft, chewy mochi — really, really good. It's in a convenient spot to stop by while traveling around Sunchang, Gwangju, or Jeonju, and it's just 2–3 minutes from Sunchang IC, so access is great too. If you're looking for a place to rest during your Sunchang trip, I highly recommend Hwayangyeonhwa!
