Two ube lattes and Hong Kong egg tarts: Yeongdeungpo café BYWAY BAKERS

In short

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a bakery café on Dangsan-ro 27-gil near Yeongdeungpogu Office Station in Seoul, run only as directly operated branches. We ordered an ube latte and an a-shot-chu (iced tea with an espresso shot) with a peach yogurt wakppu salt bread and a Hong Kong Tai Cheong-style egg tart, and my boyfriend went back for a second ube latte. With baby chairs, small goods and gift sets, BYWAY BAKERS is saved as a date spot we will return to.

Why we went to BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo for an ube latte

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a bakery café on Dangsan-ro 27-gil near Yeongdeungpogu Office Station. Back when we traveled to Buyeo, my boyfriend had his first ever "ube latte" and loved it so much he drank two cups.

Ever since, whenever he spots an ube latte anywhere, he goes in and tries it, insisting nothing tops that first taste... and today we finally found it!!

And I hopped on the trend train too. Wakppu! Finally! I tried it! Woohoo—!

I'd never heard of BYWAY BAKERS, this bakery near Yeongdeungpogu Office known among locals, but it turns out they have quite a few branches, all directly operated.

There are baby chairs too, so it's a good spot to bring a little one.

What's in the display case and when the bread comes out

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch has another display stand off to the side, beyond the main showcase. What's in the showcase is already plenty, but true to a bakery worth the trip near Yeongdeungpogu Office, there's yet another display stand off to the side, with

All these breads are made right in the bakery behind the store,

and here's when the bread comes out on a set schedule.

Wow... imagine how good the olive focaccia would be straight out of the oven???? Anyway, drinks first!

Ordering an a-shot-chu and an ube latte, then choosing a seat

We were pretty thirsty, so we ordered one a-shot-chu and one ube latte, then scurried off to find a seat.

I kept thinking I should've ordered an Americano next time. Why are these cups so cute...

Small goods sold in the store

They also sell little goods, probably because they carry whole cakes too.

While I was taking photos, my boyfriend went "Look at this!!!" showing me something delicious that had just come out, then wandered off again haha.

Window seating at BYWAY BAKERS

Every corner has such a nice mood that we kept moving from seat to seat.

Finally settled on a window seat.

Peach yogurt wakppu salt bread: how it tastes

Now for the moment we've been waiting for—wakppu wakppu!! Wakppu, what even are you...? (Honestly, I'd always sworn I don't follow trends like wakppu or mallang-i squishies... but turns out I wanted to try wakppu too, hehe.)

That wakppu ASMR I now have to play on loop before falling asleep—time to peel off the wrapping. Are you ready?!

Honestly, isn't Clone's old commercial snack "ppusyeo-ppusyeo" the original crushing snack!! But wakppu bread was a first for me...

In the ads it shatters into a million pieces, but somehow when we do it, it doesn't quite go that way, haha—still, we got a satisfying crunch.

My jaw dropped. Worth the trip near Yeongdeungpogu Office? Confirmed! The peach inside had just the right sweetness and a great texture, packed in generously,

There's a reason it costs more.

Going back for a second ube latte

(We started stamping loyalty points with our phone number, and once you skip a visit you just know you have to come back!!) It was supposed to be egg tart time, but my boyfriend wanted to rush through his ube latte, so I asked how it was and he said—

Buy me one more ube latte!!!!!!!!!!

Hahahahahaha, on his own dime, one more cup! That says it all... he was thrilled ♬

Ube latte topped with milk cream

He said this ube latte was better than the one at the café where he had two cups before—the cream on top was milk cream, and mixed together it tasted rich and delicious.

(I'm not really an ube person so I can't judge, but the a-shot-chu was really good too. Perfect for quenching thirst!)

How the egg tart compares to Hong Kong Tai Cheong style

Time to attack the tart!! Wow... it's in the style of Hong Kong's Tai Cheong Bakery, and honestly I've always preferred the flaky, pie-style Hong Kong egg tart over the Portuguese nata.

Crispier than that! Sweeter and more delicious than that! Softer than that... Goodbye Tai Cheong, I'll be enjoying this taste right here in Korea from now on.

Getting a tart filling this smooth and nutty, packed all the way through, isn't easy... well done, well done!

Goods, gift sets and BYWAY BAKERS as a date stop

The café's atmosphere is so nice and it's quiet enough to make a great date spot,

and with this many goods on display, browsing them over coffee is its own little fun. BYWAY BAKERS, the bakery worth the trip near Yeongdeungpogu Office, is officially saved as a place to come back to for dates!

They're also preparing gift sets like these, which would come in handy for a courtesy gift or a holiday present.
