Cedar-steamed lunch with parents in Hwajeong: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

In short

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Ilsan Hwajeong Branch is an all-you-can-eat cedar-steamed (pyeonbaekjjim) and shabu-shabu restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building on Hwasin-ro 260beon-gil in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The writer arrived with her parents right at opening before a grocery run and worked through two cedar-steaming trays, rice paper rolls, and shabu-shabu in both katsuo and spicy mushroom broth, with dipping the meat in raw egg the standout trick. Wide spacing between tables makes Pyeonbaek Hoegwan an easy Hwajeong Station pick for family meals and group gatherings.

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan is already a proven spot for me — I used to go with my boyfriend whenever we wanted a warm, easy-on-the-stomach meal .ᐟ Today I wanted to feed my mom and dad a solid lunch before we went grocery shopping, so we hit the Ilsan Hwajeong branch since it's on the way. There's a building parking lot, but like everywhere in Hwajeong, it's tight, so we used the 🅿️ E-mart parking lot instead and registered our parking at the Ediya Coffee on E-mart's 1st floor :)

Pick your shabu-shabu broth flavor on the tablet, and they bring the pyeonbaekjjim over first. Once the 10-minute timer ⏰ goes off, a staff member comes and opens it for you, so use the self-bar while you wait .ᐟ

Soy, peanut, and chili sauce station

Three sauces are set out: soy sauce, peanut sauce, and chili sauce. I'll scoop what I want onto my sauce plate, then bring veggies over for the rice paper rolls .ᐟ

You can freely grab shabu-shabu meat too, and there's a refill broth station — though if you ordered a broth other than the katsuo or spicy mushroom broth, you'll need to call a staff member separately 🔔

Mushrooms • shrimp • sweet pumpkin • napa cabbage • bok choy, all neatly arranged in the pyeonbaekjjim .ᐟ The surprising part is that this pyeonbaekjjim is also all-you-can-eat within the time limit .ᐟ Big eaters could genuinely eat themselves stuffed here

My mom's eating tip 💬 Beat a raw egg like you would with sukiyaki, dip the meat in it, then lightly dip it in soy sauce — so, so good ♥

Eating the crunchy bean sprouts together with meat brings out that distinct cedar aroma of the pyeonbaekjjim — healthy but delicious 🪵 🤎

Switching to shabu-shabu: katsuo and spicy mushroom broth

Two rounds of pyeonbaekjjim is the sweet spot, and now it's shabu-shabu time .ᐟ Hit the

Two shabu-shabu broth pots, katsuo and spicy mushroom

We went with katsuo / spicy mushroom broth ✔️ A safe, well-balanced flavor to enjoy as a base .ᐟ Next time I'm curious about the mala broth. Because I love mala ... 🌶️

They bring over the shabu vegetables and meat. I love mokyi and baengmokyi (wood ear and white fungus mushrooms), and they were cut into perfectly bite-sized pieces, which I loved ♥ Shabu-shabu is on 💨 How do you even hold back with a pot full of meat ... ♥

For me the soy sauce was the tastiest, but all three sauces have their own charm, so it's fun rotating through them :) I think I genuinely didn't stop eating the whole time. You could feel yourself getting full in real time haha. We finished it off with the mushroom broth, and sadly there was no room left for the porridge or kalguksu — next time. Adios
