Solo diner pork soup at Gwangju Songjeong Station: Gaeryeong Gukbap

In short

Gaeryeong Gukbap is a dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gwangju Songjeong Station in Gwangsan, Gwangju. Ordering the pork soup alone before a business trip, the milky broth at Gaeryeong Gukbap was seasoned just right and there was so much pork that meat came up with nearly every spoonful, with a choice of toryeom (rice warmed in the broth) or rice served on the side. With tables set aside for solo diners, Gaeryeong Gukbap is an easy, filling meal on your own before boarding a train.

Recommending Gaeryeong Gukbap in Gwangju — a hearty soup restaurant that gives you more rice and meat if you run out.

Where is Gaeryeong Gukbap? On the 2nd floor of Gwangju Songjeong Station

Gaeryeong Gukbap is a pork soup restaurant inside the 2nd floor of Gwangju Songjeong Station. I stopped by briefly on a business trip day, timing it around my train.

I heard a gukbap (Korean soup with rice) place had opened at Gwangju Songjeong Station, so I dropped in briefly on my way to a business trip. I'd often felt there wasn't a great spot to grab a quick meal before catching a train, so I was so glad to see a gukbap place open right inside the station. Being inside the station meant less walking around, and I could time it to eat and then head straight to the train — perfect for a meal before a business trip or a getaway.

Parking was convenient too, since you can just use the Gwangju Songjeong Station parking tower. The area around the station can get pretty congested, which usually stresses me out about parking, but pulling into the parking tower and walking straight into the station made it easier than I expected.

Solo-dining tables and 2-person tables inside Gaeryeong Gukbap

The restaurant isn't huge, but the seating was well laid out. There were solo-dining tables good for eating alone, plus 2-person tables, so someone dining solo like me could eat comfortably without feeling self-conscious. There were actually other solo diners there too, so the atmosphere wasn't awkward at all.

Gaeryeong Gukbap menu: toryeom or rice on the side

The menu at Gaeryeong Gukbap is built around pork soup and clear pork gomtang, and the pork soup can be ordered either as toryeom (broth poured repeatedly over rice) or with rice served separately. There were also boiled pork slices (suyuk), noodles, side dishes, and a set meal that comes with suyuk.

The menu is centered on pork soup and clear pork gomtang, with suyuk, noodles, and side dishes as well. You could choose toryeom or rice-separate for the pork soup, so you could order to your taste, and I liked that there was a clear pork gomtang option too, haha. Looking at the menu board, I saw there was also a set meal that included suyuk, so next time I come with someone, I want to order suyuk alongside the soup instead of just gukbap.

Wall sign at the restaurant announcing rice and meat refills

While waiting after ordering, a sign on the wall caught my eye.

If rice, broth, or meat runs short, we'll give you more.

I'd occasionally seen rice or broth refills at gukbap places, but a sign promising more meat too was a first for me, and it surprised me a little. It felt like a place that wants you to leave full from the start, rather than skimping and hoping you order extra — I liked that.

What's on the self-serve bar at Gaeryeong Gukbap

Gaeryeong Gukbap's self-serve bar has diced radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, salted shrimp, vegetables, and garlic chives. You could freely help yourself to as much as you needed.

The self-serve bar was also neatly kept and well stocked. Diced radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, salted shrimp, vegetables, garlic chives — good things to eat with gukbap were plentifully filled, so I could freely help myself to as much as I wanted.

If a self-serve bar is empty or messy, I tend not to want to touch it, but here everything was well organized, so it was easy to use.

How the pork soup tastes and how much meat you get

Gaeryeong Gukbap's pork soup has a milky broth that's seasoned just right, so there was no need to add salt separately. The meat was tender with no gamey smell, and the portion was so generous that meat came up with nearly every spoonful.

After a short wait, the pork soup arrived. It was the milky broth I love, and I was pleased the moment I saw it.

The seasoning was neither too bland nor too salty, exactly right, so there was no need to add salt separately. I just went ahead and mixed the rice into the soup right away.

A spoonful of pork soup broth with rice mixed in

Taking a spoonful, I could really taste the deep flavor drawn out from the meat.

Pork soup topped generously with garlic chives

Adding a generous amount of garlic chives from the self-serve bar brought out the aroma and made the broth even tastier.

A piece of meat topped with salted shrimp from the soup

The meat was tender with no gamey smell and just the right thickness. It was tasty even just topped with a bit of salted shrimp, and putting a piece of meat on top of napa cabbage kimchi felt almost like eating suyuk.

A spoon piled high with meat from the pork soup

As I ate, I found myself thinking, 'Honestly, with this much meat, do I even need to order suyuk separately?' — the meat portion was that generous. Some gukbap places are mostly broth with just a few scraps of meat, but here meat came up with the spoon practically every time. The wall said they'd give extra meat too, but honestly the base portion was already so much I never even thought about asking for more. Of course, next time I come with someone, I still want to try the suyuk separately.

Verdict: a filling solo meal before your train

I only stopped by briefly on my way to catch a train for a business trip, but I ended up having a proper, satisfying meal. It's inside Gwangju Songjeong Station so it's easy to get to, comfortable for solo dining, and generous with meat — a gukbap place I'd want to deliberately visit again even without a train to catch. If you're looking for somewhere to eat well before boarding a train at Songjeong Station, or a gukbap spot where you can eat comfortably alone, this was a solid choice. Next time, I'm planning to come with someone instead of alone and try the clear pork gomtang and suyuk together.
