Goyang Korean restaurant solo meal, ₩30,000 corvina set: Kim Myeongju

Today I'm bringing you a story from a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant near Wondang Station.

This is Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Branch, a Wondang go-to spot. It's actually right near my office, so I always saw crowds passing by and wondered about it. Yesterday I went out for an early lunch and finally checked it out!

Where Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang is, and its opening hours

Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Branch is fairly accessible near Wondang Station, open daily 10:30–21:00. I went alone and luckily there was a seat, so I had a comfortable meal haha.

The tiled-roof exterior gives off a hanjeongsik vibe even from a distance. There's plenty of parking too, so driving there wasn't inconvenient at all. Just note it may be closed on Lunar New Year or Chuseok, so check ahead!

Eating alone at a four-person table: was it awkward?

The first thing I noticed walking into Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Branch was that it's bigger than I expected. I was alone but ended up seated at a 4-person table.

I thought I'd feel a bit self-conscious, but there were other solo diners around too, so it didn't really bother me.

What comes with the 30,000 won dried corvina set

Ordered menu: "Boribulbi jeongsik" ₩30,000

I ordered the boribulbi jeongsik (dried yellow corvina set) that day. It's one of the Tteuranchae set menus, coming with over 10 kinds of side dishes plus dried corvina, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), and stone-pot rice.

I thought it was a lot for one person, but I found myself reaching for one dish after another haha.

I love stone-pot rice haha, I love having sungnyung (scorched rice tea) after a meal :)

How to eat it: rice in green tea water topped with dried corvina

Scoop the rice into a bowl and pour in the green tea water served alongside! Pour the kettle water into the stone pot and save it for the very end of the meal — that's basically Korean-style dessert haha.

You know you're supposed to soak the rice in green tea water and top it with boribulbi like this, right?! Hahaha, looking at this now makes me want it again ㅠ

I remember dried corvina having a slightly fishy smell somewhere else before, but here I barely noticed any. It wasn't too salty either, so I could keep eating without any burden. The flesh wasn't dry, it was tender, which went perfectly with the stone-pot rice. Getting to eat a whole pricey dried corvina by myself made for a happy meal haha.

The self-serve side dish corner and cheonggukjang refills

At Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Branch, you can freely refill side dishes at the self-serve corner, and staff said the cheonggukjang can be refilled on request too. Being able to grab as much of the sides you want made it even more convenient :)

But even as a single portion, the cheonggukjang came out at roughly a two-person amount, so I didn't even bother with a refill. The seasoning wasn't too strong either, so it blended well with everything else haha.

With the table filled with food, I never felt like the portions were lacking. Each side dish felt neatly prepared without being overly seasoned.

Is this Goyang hanjeongsik worth a solo visit?

🐷 A Wondang go-to spot where even dining solo felt comfortable and easy. The side dishes, dried corvina, and cheonggukjang all came together nicely, and I'm curious to try other menu items next time. If you're looking for a hanjeongsik spot near Wondang Station, this seems worth a visit haha.
