Ansan seafood bar with butter-grilled shrimp heads: Susan Jang

In short

Susan Jang (수산장) Gojan branch is a seafood izakaya with live tanks, just up from the tuna street in Gojan-dong, Ansan. A group of friends ordered live shrimp sashimi at 26,000 won, 8-minute steamed blue crab at 28,500 won, the seasonal seafood platter special at 59,000 won, ankimo with crackers and Shin Ramyun at 6,000 won, and asked for the shrimp heads to be grilled again in butter. With gizzard shad thrown in free, this autumn spread at Susan Jang delivered on both value and sashimi quality.

Fall really is the season for shrimp and crab, so I'm writing up a Gojan-dong seafood izakaya where you can enjoy them without breaking the bank — Susan Jang (수산장) in Gojan-dong!

Where Susan Jang Gojan branch is, plus hours and parking

Susan Jang is located up near the tuna street in Gojan-dong, in Ansan's Gojan new town, and it's open daily from 17:30 to 00:30, with last order at 23:30. It's easiest to find if you head for the shabu-shabu all-day building!

Free parking is available at Rodeo Town — 1 hour 30 minutes on weekdays, 2 hours on weekends.

Live shrimp tank in front of the restaurant

Live shrimp are swimming energetically in the tank out front, and they scoop them out right when your order comes in! Seeing shrimp this fresh really makes it feel like fall.

How many seats does Susan Jang have? Inside the Gojan branch

Inside this Gojan-dong seafood izakaya there are three 4-person tables plus some 2-person tables, so if you're in a large group the wait could be long.

Indoor tank with crab and sea squirt

Inside there's crab, sea squirt, sea cucumber, and live fish for sashimi — I honestly couldn't tell if this was an izakaya or a raw fish restaurant haha. A great spot to enjoy sashimi and drinks in a nice atmosphere — Susan Jang, Gojan-dong.

What we ordered at Susan Jang and what it cost

That day my friends and I basically had a pig-out party lol, everything on the menu looked too good to pass up.

  • Raw shrimp sashimi ₩26,000
  • 8-minute steamed crab ₩28,500
  • Seasonal seafood special platter ₩59,000
  • Ankimo with crackers
  • Shin Ramyun ₩6,000

That's what we ordered haha.

Grilled flounder served as the basic side dish

Susan Jang's basic side dish is grilled flounder! I've also been to the Seonbu branch and paid out of my own pocket, and it was the same there. Personally I think the table spacing is much better at the Gojan branch.

Yebisu draft beer served with an ice basket

We also ordered Yebisu draft beer — sadly it came out lukewarm, so they gave us an ice basket on the side. A little disappointing, but still tasty!

Does Susan Jang cut the heads off the live shrimp sashimi?

The raw shrimp sashimi (₩26,000) comes with about 9–10 shrimp, and if you ask, they'll cut off the heads for you. The shell on the body is already peeled.

The raw shrimp sashimi arrived first! So fresh it was practically still alive — Susan Jang's live shrimp.

Thankfully haha — I asked them to butter-grill the heads.

Raw shrimp sashimi served with vinegar-chili paste and sauce

Served with vinegar-red-pepper paste and what seemed like a fire chicken sauce — sweet, rich, and so good. Visit Susan Jang before fall is over and be sure to try it!!

The buttered shrimp heads were also a top-tier side dish — gone in the blink of an eye, seriously delicious.

What comes on the 59,000-won seasonal seafood platter

Then came the seasonal seafood special! A platter loaded with seasonal sashimi and shellfish.

Flounder, red seabream, rockfish, and gizzard shad sashimi thrown in as a bonus! They said gizzard shad season is just starting.

Drinking out of the rock sea squirt shell like this is peak romance, isn't it. Even though it's an izakaya, the sashimi and seafood quality here rivals a dedicated raw fish restaurant — genuinely delicious at this Gojan-dong seafood izakaya. The tanks are well maintained too, no fishy smell at all, and the flesh felt moist, like it was sliced fresh to order. Sometimes when you order sashimi at an izakaya it's too dried out, but the sashimi at Susan Jang, with its own tanks, is seriously good.

We also simply ordered ankimo with crackers. It was originally meant as a palate cleanser, but piling the sweet, savory ankimo onto the crackers brought my appetite right back ^^......haha.

8-minute steamed blue crab, 28,500 won: how full is autumn crab?

Susan Jang's autumn steamed crab is ₩28,500 and takes 8 minutes to prepare once ordered. Autumn crab is all about the roe and the meat — look at how plump and moist the yield is.

Finishing with Shin Ramyun cooked in the crab shell

Our very, very last palate cleanser: Shin Ramyun.

Shin Ramyun piled onto a crab shell

Piled onto the crab shell from the steamed crab we ate earlier, it completed a wonderfully romantic autumn spread. Gizzard shad, crab, and shrimp season has come back around — enjoy fall at this good-value, great-atmosphere Gojan-dong seafood izakaya, Susan Jang.
