Inside Yakiniku Pungyeong and how ordering works

We'd reserved ahead, and the place was clean with a pretty good atmosphere. It's not private rooms, but the tables are spaced out generously enough that you can eat comfortably without worrying about the next table. Ordering is done through a QR code at the table, so we just looked at the menu and ordered right away.

What two people ordered, and what it cost

We ordered snowflake short rib (눈꽃갈비살) for 37,000 won, seasoned prime short rib (양념특갈비) for 46,000 won (2 servings), and skirt steak (안창살) for 32,000 won.

Along with the meat came four kinds of side dishes — gungchae (edible chrysanthemum stem), peppers, and pickled greens — and they set us up with charcoal too.

All the meat we ordered came out at once, and the marbling looked so pretty — doesn't it look delicious just from the photo?

Tomato slices in yuzu sauce

Sliced tomatoes drizzled with yuzu sauce came out with the meat. The staff recommended eating one occasionally between bites of beef — beef can get greasy if you eat it nonstop, but the yuzu tomato reset the palate and made it easier to keep going.

Well-marbled beef: starting with the skirt steak

We started with the skirt steak. Putting it on the charcoal brought up that great meaty aroma — beef really is best over charcoal. The skirt steak had a nice beefy flavor with just the right amount of chew. It was tasty just dipped in salt, but I liked it best with the pickled peppers — the beef's savoriness plus the peppers' tangy kick cleaned up my palate nicely.

The signature snowflake short rib

Next up was the snowflake short rib. The marbling ran through the whole cut, so grilling it over charcoal kept the juices locked in. The first bite was soft and savory, and the beef flavor came through more with each chew. My boyfriend wrapped a big piece around a scoop of rice like a wrap — impressive eating skills, honestly. The snowflake short rib was also great with the pickled greens.

Complimentary cream cheese crackers

Partway through, the staff brought us crackers topped with cream cheese, on the house. There was a generous amount of cream cheese piled on top, and it was rich and creamy. The crackers' crunch went really well with the cream cheese.

I even topped mine with a slice of tomato, and the fresh tomato flavor made it even better. I didn't expect to try this kind of combo at a beef restaurant, but it turned out to be one of the more memorable freebies.

Doenjang stew with a deep broth

Partway through the meal, we ordered a doenjang stew (된장찌개, fermented soybean paste stew) too.

Doenjang stew loaded with ingredients

The broth was thick and deeply flavored, packed with tofu, vegetables, and even meat. My boyfriend said the broth was so good he polished off a whole bowl of rice with it. Eating spoonfuls between bites of meat worked really well.

Gamtae raw beef sushi from the review event

We also tried the laver-wrapped raw beef sushi (감태육회초밥) we received through a review event. The sushi pieces were large and generously topped with raw beef, so one bite felt really satisfying. The savory raw beef paired nicely with the laver's aroma, and it worked well with the rice too. It was a complimentary item, but it was good enough that I'd want to order it as a separate menu item next time.

Seasoned prime short rib

Last up, we grilled the seasoned short rib. The seasoning was subtle, letting the short rib's own umami come through, and the meat was tender. Since the seasoning wasn't too strong, it went well with rice.

Melon served on the house at the end of the meal

After the meat, they brought out melon on the house too. With the sweet melon, we ended up full from a full meal-to-dessert course.

Is Yakiniku Pungyeong worth it for a date night?

We went straight from work for a dinner date, and the meat was delicious and the restaurant comfortable enough for a nice meal. The staff were friendly too, which made the whole meal pleasant. If you're looking for a good beef restaurant in Uiwang, or a dinner date spot near Indeogwon, I'd recommend Yakiniku Pungyeong!
