As mornings and evenings start to turn a little cooler like they have lately, I naturally start craving warm soup dishes. Especially when dining out with the kids, I find myself looking for something the whole family can comfortably eat rather than anything too strongly seasoned. This time, we went to Doonjeong (도온정), a Korean restaurant in Hyangdong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang. It is close to home in Hyangdong, so I had often noticed it while passing by. From warm Korean beef gomtang to Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, hot pots, and various pancakes, the menu was so varied that it looked like a nice place for a family meal. More than anything, it was a day when I wanted a warm, filling meal, so I visited with high expectations. :)

Doonjeong is in Hyangdong’s central commercial area, making it easy to visit not only for Hyangdong residents but also from near Sangam or DMC. Since we were out with the kids, we drove, and the parking directions were clear, so parking was easy.
A restaurant atmosphere that is easy to visit with kids
The first thing I noticed upon entering was how clean everything was. The full-height windows kept it from feeling closed in, and the natural light made the space look even larger than it was. Warm lighting and interior details came together to create a comfortable setting for a meal. The tables were also spaced relatively generously, so it did not feel like we were sitting too close to the next table.
There were tables for larger groups too, so it looked suitable for family gatherings or a meal with parents. I also saw people dining alone, so I think it would be a good option for anyone looking for a neat solo meal in Hyangdong. And, as someone raising children, I was happy to see that high chairs were available. When eating out with kids, the first thing I check is whether there is a high chair, so having that detail covered made it comfortable for families as well.

A varied menu, from gomtang to hot pot and pancakes
Doonjeong specializes in Korean beef gomtang, but the menu was more varied than I expected. When I visited, I saw clear gomtang for ₩12,000, special clear gomtang for ₩16,000, Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap for ₩16,000, spicy Korean beef gomtang for ₩15,000, beef tendon gomtang for ₩16,000, brisket gomtang for ₩18,000, Korean beef hot pot for ₩49,000, Korean beef tripe hot pot for ₩54,000, boiled brisket for ₩49,000, meat kimchi pancake for ₩18,000, meat chive pancake for ₩17,000, and shrimp minari pancake for ₩19,000.
If you visit alone, you can choose a one-bowl dish such as gomtang or yukhoe bibimbap; if you are with a group, it would be nice to add boiled beef or a pancake to a hot pot for a generous spread. I think Doonjeong’s strength is its wide range of choices, from lunch to a family dinner or a gathering with a drink. We ordered the special clear gomtang, Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, and meat chive pancake. :-)

Kimchi, kkakdugi, and Korean ingredients
While we waited for the food, the basic side dishes came out first. With Korean food, kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) are just as important as gomtang, aren’t they? :) At Doonjeong, the kimchi and kkakdugi were set out neatly so we could serve ourselves as much as we wanted. A spoonful of gomtang followed by a crisp piece of kkakdugi was, as expected, a great match.
Doonjeong says it uses Korean ingredients, including a single variety of Saecheongmu rice produced in Jeollanam-do and Korean native-breed female beef. With a dish like gomtang, where the flavor of the ingredients themselves matters so much, I feel the choice of ingredients matters even more, so I liked that they paid attention to this too.

The light yet satisfying special clear Korean beef gomtang
The dish I chose because I wanted warm soup that day was the clear Korean beef gomtang. The broth looked clear and clean at a glance, with a generous amount of meat inside. I took a sip of the hot broth first, and rather than having an aggressively strong flavor, it was light and clean, making it easy to eat without feeling weighed down. Gomtang can feel a little heavy as you eat if it is too oily or strongly seasoned, but Doonjeong’s clear gomtang had a comforting flavor. Rice was included too, so even one bowl felt filling.

Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap that pairs beautifully with minari
Another dish at Doonjeong that caught my eye was the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap. When it arrived, it was piled generously with fresh-looking Korean beef yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) and other ingredients, so it looked delicious from the start. I especially liked that it included minari (water celery), which I love. Mix the yukhoe and minari together and take a bite, and the tender texture of the beef is joined by minari’s distinctive fragrant, crisp bite—they go so well together. The pieces of minari made it feel even fresher than yukhoe on its own. Warm gomtang broth is served alongside the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap too.
Taking a bite of bibimbap and then a spoonful of warm broth made for such a good pairing. It was filling for a meal, yet had a different charm from gomtang, so if it is your first visit to Doonjeong, this is a dish I would recommend alongside the Korean beef gomtang.

The kimchi and kkakdugi were especially nice alongside it, adding a crisp, refreshing flavor to the light gomtang that kept me reaching back for more. There was more meat than I expected too, so it was fun to scoop up rice and meat together. If, like me, you love meat or want an even more substantial meal, I think the special clear gomtang would be a good choice. It was just right for a day when strongly seasoned food feels like too much, or when you are craving a warm, comforting meal.

Crisp and moist meat chive pancake
It felt a little incomplete to eat only gomtang and yukhoe bibimbap, so the dish we ordered to share was the meat chive pancake. It looked so appetizing from the moment it came out, browned nicely all over. The edges were crisp while the middle was moist, which I loved right from the texture. Unlike a typical chive pancake, it included meat, making it more savory and substantial. The fragrant chives and the umami of the meat went together much better than I expected. It was delicious on its own, but lightly dipping it in the accompanying sauce added a salty savoriness that kept me reaching for another piece. :) It was mild enough for the kids to enjoy too, so it would make a great side dish when visiting as a family.

A combination of gomtang, yukhoe bibimbap, and pancake
Having crisp meat chive pancake here and there while eating the hot, light Korean beef gomtang made for a truly lovely combination. If several people visit Doonjeong in Hyangdong together, I would recommend adding one meat chive pancake to gomtang or yukhoe bibimbap and sharing it. I was satisfied enough that I would order it again on my next visit. :)
The Doonjeong in Hyangdong that we visited this time was a comfortable place to stop by when craving warm, filling Korean food. The clear Korean beef gomtang was satisfying with its light broth and generous meat, while I especially loved the pairing of tender yukhoe and fragrant minari in the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap!! On days like these, when I am starting to crave warm soup, there really is nothing as satisfying as a bowl of gomtang. If you are looking for somewhere to eat with your parents in Hyangdong, or somewhere comfortable to dine with a child, I think Doonjeong would be a nice place to visit. 🩵
