Dinner at a Gongdeok burger restaurant with smoky bacon: Quokka Bite

In short

Quokka Bite is a handmade burger restaurant on Baekbeom-ro 24-gil near Gongdeok and Daeheung stations in Mapo, Seoul. Over dinner the writer ordered two of Quokka Bite's popular burgers, the Grilled Quokka Burger and the Avocado Smash Quokka Burger, and swapped the set fries for sweet potato fries. The chewy, smoky bacon and sweet-salty sweet potato fries were the most memorable part, enough to plan an extra bacon add-on next visit.

First photo from visiting Quokka Bite, a handmade burger restaurant in Gongdeok

On a day I had a dinner appointment in Gongdeok, I was trying to figure out what to eat and ended up going to Quokka Bite for handmade burgers. I found it while looking for burger spots near Gongdeok Station, and since it's also close to Gyeongui Line Forest Park, I figured it'd be perfect for a meal followed by a walk. On days when the weather's nice like this, eating something good and then strolling slowly is honestly the best combo.

What Quokka Bite in Gongdeok looks like, and where to sit

Quokka Bite's storefront and entrance

Even before stepping inside, Quokka Bite gave off a casual overall vibe. It felt hip yet easygoing — the kind of place you'd want to walk into for a burger — and the interior was neatly arranged too. I liked that there was also a menu board outside.

I visited during dinner hours, and there were tables of friends eating together as well as pairs of guests who'd come just for burgers, so it seemed to work well for anything from solo meals to casual lunch dates. The tables are on the narrow side but there are quite a few of them, and there's also an outdoor terrace, which would be great for eating outside on a nice day.

Quokka Bite's menu: ordering the Grilled and Avocado Smash Quokka Burgers

Apparently the Grilled Quokka Burger set and the whole shrimp Quokka Shrimp Burger are the most popular items.

They were also running a review event giving away a hash brown or a fan. Looking at the menu, there were quite a few burger types so I thought about it for a moment, then picked the popular Grilled Quokka Burger and the Avocado Smash Quokka Burger. I added a set for one of them and, rather than plain fries, swapped in the sweet potato fries I'd been curious about. And of course, no burger meal is complete without a Pepsi!

The ordered set and Pepsi

Since these are handmade burgers cooked to order, it takes a bit of time. Even so, it came out faster than I expected.

Quokka character sticker taken from the restaurant

They had quokka stickers so I grabbed one for my planner haha. The quokka character here is so cute.

Quokka Bite's open kitchen prep counter

It's an open kitchen so you can see the prep counter, which was reassuringly clean.

Two handmade burgers set on the table

Once the food arrived, the burgers were bigger than I expected, and I could tell this would be a proper meal. Handmade burgers really are best eaten by hand in big bites rather than with a fork and knife, so I dug in carefully.

How does the Avocado Smash Quokka Burger taste?

Let's start with the visually flashy Avocado Smash Quokka Burger.

With avocado right there in the name, I was curious about this one, and biting in, I could definitely taste the smooth texture of avocado. That well-ripened avocado flavor — yum.

Patty filling topped with avocado

The patty's heavy flavor got a softer finish with the avocado mixed in. If you like avocado's distinctive nutty, mild taste, this menu item would suit you well.

Hash brown received from the review event

The hash brown I got from the review event was salty and so good — this place is a fried food champ too.

Grilled Quokka Burger: smoky bacon you can actually taste

Next up, the Grilled Quokka Burger — true to its patty, the meaty flavor really came through from the first bite. With vegetables and sauce added on top, nothing overpowered anything else and it all came together nicely.

Bacon and vegetables inside the Grilled Quokka Burger

The bacon here was chewy with what tasted like a smoky, grilled flavor. I'm definitely adding extra bacon next time!!

Why swap the set fries for sweet potato fries at Quokka Bite

Why wouldn't you eat sweet potato fries? Sweet and salty, that combo is the best... Unlike regular fries, they have a sweetness that paired nicely with the burger when I grabbed one between bites. After the salty burger flavor, that gentle sweetness from the sweet potato kept pulling me back for more. Personally, if you're ordering a handmade burger set, I'd recommend trying the sweet potato fries swap at least once.

Gyeongui Line Forest Park walked after the meal

From Quokka Bite to a walk along Gyeongui Line Forest Park

After eating a full lunch and stepping out, I walked a bit along the nearby Gyeongui Line Forest Park, and I liked how naturally the route connected. So if you're looking for a meal spot for a Gongdeok date, this could work as a Gyeongui Line Forest Park dining-and-date course.

A handmade burger restaurant that's good for a solid meal at lunchtime, and a relaxed visit with friends or a partner on weekends. If you're near Gongdeok Station and want something other than your usual go-to, or if you just love burgers, Quokka Bite might be worth a try.
