Couple eats over 1kg of eel: Songnim Bok Jangeo, Suwon eel buffet

Lately the weather's been warming up and I've been feeling a bit run down, so I figured I needed some proper nourishing food. My husband's schedule happened to line up too, so we went out for eel together after a long while.

If you want to really eat your fill of eel, the price can get a little heavy even for just two people, right? But I heard about a place where you can eat all-you-can-eat freshwater eel, charcoal-grilled pork belly, and even chicken neck meat, so we went to check it out. It's a Suwon City Hall eel restaurant called Songnim Bok Jangeo Freshwater Eel All-You-Can-Eat Suwon Main Branch.

Is parking convenient?

There's dedicated parking behind the restaurant and in the basement facility, so there's a decent amount of parking space. That said, it can get crowded on weekends or during peak meal times, so it might be worth using the parking near the nearby park, or just taking public transit or a taxi!

These days, eating freshwater eel properly can cost quite a bit, so the thought that came to mind first was what a steal it is — all-you-can-eat eel, pork belly, and chicken neck meat for around ₩20,000-something per person.

The atmosphere — a spacious hall for work dinners and family gatherings too

The moment I opened the door and stepped in, my first thought was "this place is huge!" Maybe because it recently opened, but the interior was really clean and pleasant too. The tables were spaced generously and the place was so spacious that I thought it would be great for a company dinner, and also really good for a whole family gathering.

There was a brand introduction written on one wall of the restaurant, so I gave it a read. It said they select live freshwater eel every morning directly from eel farms and wholesale markets, prep it, then supply it to the restaurant. Rather than using thawed frozen eel just because it's cheap, their principle is apparently to only serve freshly prepped eel every day — reading that gave me even more trust in the taste.

Honestly, since it was all-you-can-eat, I wasn't expecting much in terms of taste or quality haha. But I put the basic-setting eel on the grill, cooked it up, and took a bite... "Wait, this is really good?!" I thought, ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

It was way softer than expected and had no fishy smell at all, which surprised me. According to the signage, besides freshwater eel, they also have a rich eel soup made fresh in-house! If you love eel and eat a lot of it, coming here would really be a great deal!

How were the charcoal pork belly and chicken neck meat?

Along with the eel, they also serve carefully selected premium-grade pork belly and chicken neck meat. I usually grill pork belly at home or on a regular grill plate, but grilling it over a charcoal brazier for once gave it that smoky char and a nice golden-brown finish, making it much tastier! I tried chicken neck meat for the first time here — it was chewy yet tender, and really delicious~~

It was also convenient being able to freely grab lettuce or perilla leaves from the self-serve bar without hesitation. Dipping the eel in the eel sauce with a bit of pungent shredded ginger, then eating it with pickled onion, was so good that it never got old — I just kept eating haha.

How much did we eat as a couple?

It was so much better than expected that we ordered another plate of eel and grilled it up! Neither my husband nor I are especially big eaters normally, but it was so tasty that we cleaned out two whole plates. Between the two of us, we must have eaten at least 1kg.

My husband kept saying how good the combination of golden pork belly, chicken neck meat, and eel was, and ate happily the whole time. For anyone who likes to drink... this menu is honestly the kind that makes soju go down way too easily haha.
