Gangneung sundubu restaurant, last table at 11am: Jeong Eunsuk
In short
Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) set-meal restaurant on Nanseolheon-ro in Gangneung. On a local friend's recommendation, the writer's family, baby included, arrived at 11am on a weekday, took the last open table and ordered the Chodang Myeongpum set, which came with soft tofu hot pot, bossam pork, tofu, gajami-sikhae (fermented flatfish) and seasoned grilled kodari (half-dried pollock) all at once. With baby chairs and a large parking lot, Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu worked well for a family meal with a baby.

Why a Gangneung local recommended Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu
You have to eat Chodang sundubu if you come to Gangneung!! This time, traveling with my family, I was looking for baby-friendly restaurants, and I happen to have a friend who lives in Gangneung, so I asked for a recommendation! We went to Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, which they recommended. It's such a famous spot that when we arrived, there were already quite a lot of people.

I even saw people arriving by tour bus — I thought, "wow, tourists really come here." We went expecting to wait, and sure enough it was busy, so I'd recommend making a Naver reservation. (They say Naver reservations take priority over walk-in waiting.)

Parking and the last free table at 11am on a weekday
The parking lot is fairly large, so it was easy to bring a car. When you're traveling around Gangneung as a family, parking is always a worry, but here I barely had to think about it.

Even at 11am on a weekday, there were so many people — we barely got the last table.

The owner has apparently won an award... no wonder the seasoning was spot on??
Chodang Myeongpum set vs Chodang tofu set: what we ordered
The menu

I was torn between the Chodang Myeongpum table and the Chodang tofu table, but since the price difference was just ₩5,000 and the Myeongpum table came with extra seasoned braised pollock, I went straight for the Chodang Myeongpum table. It's not just a sundubu-only menu — it comes with sundubu jjigae, bossam (boiled pork), tofu, gajami-sikhae (fermented flatfish), and braised pollock all together, which was great for trying a bit of everything when there were several of us. If you feel like it'd be a waste to come all the way to Gangneung and only eat sundubu, this kind of full spread is a good option.

What was even better was that it came out almost right after we ordered!! There were several side dishes too, so once the table was set, it looked quite hearty.

My mom is a real foodie, and she praised the side dishes for being perfectly seasoned and neat... Guess it really is a local Gangneung favorite.

Rather than just eating sundubu and leaving, Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu lets you have sundubu plus bossam plus braised pollock all at once, which was great for a family visit. The baby ate really well too.

How the Chodang sundubu tasted
And now the main event — Chodang sundubu! The soft, cloud-like tofu was smooth and nutty, so it was easy to eat without being too intense. Yesterday I ate jjamppong sundubu at a famous Gangneung restaurant (DHGD) and was shocked at how intense and salty it was;;; Here, even with red chili powder in it, the seasoning was spot on, and my whole family gave it a thumbs up.. Better than Donghwa Garden, honestly.

The seasoned grilled kodari that stole the meal
Honestly, I went for the sundubu, so I didn't have high expectations for the pollock. But when I tried it, it was better than I thought. The sauce was sweet with just a hint of spice, and the pollock meat was chewy — great eaten together with rice.

Is Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu okay with a baby?
The bossam pork was fairly soft, so it worked well for the baby too. My baby ate the sundubu and bossam happily. When you take a baby to a restaurant, it's stressful if there's only food for adults, but having a soft dish like sundubu made it easy to feed her too. We went with the baby, there were baby chairs, and she ate well — so satisfying..

Final verdict on Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu
If you're looking for a place to eat Chodang sundubu in Gangneung, put Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu on your list! It's a local-recommended spot in Gangneung (recommended by my friend.) Also, if you write a Naver review, they give you Chodang sundubu pudding. Chodang sundubu pudding lol, it's a real specialty. Make sure to try it~!
