What kind of restaurant is Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu?

This Gangneung Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) restaurant is where Jeong Eunsuk, Master Chef No. 48 of Korea, keeps the taste of Chodang tofu alive — she grew up near the birthplace of Heo Nanseolheon and has been close to tofu since childhood.

The table is set with tofu made from beans grown in Gangwon-do and ingredients caught along the East Sea, so it's a great place to properly taste Chodang sundubu in Gangneung.

I went for breakfast with my husband and mother. I'd booked through Naver in advance and we arrived around 9:30 a.m.

The indoor waiting area for guests

What caught my eye even before stepping inside was the waiting area. They'd set up several chairs so guests don't have to stand around outside when it's busy.

There's also a table-ling device for registering to wait, which showed real thought for the guests.

Notice about Naver reservation prepayment for priority entry

I also spotted a notice explaining that if you make a Naver reservation and prepay ₩20,000, you get to enter ahead of walk-in waiting.

Inside Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu

Walking in, the staff greeted us warmly. The interior was bigger than I expected, and the tables weren't cramped together.

There were baby chairs ready too, so it looked comfortable for dining with kids.

Looking around the restaurant, the plaque for Master Chef No. 48 Jeong Eunsuk caught my eye.

Display telling the story of Chodang tofu inside the restaurant

It was striking to see how her story of growing up close to tofu in Chodang has carried through into the food today. On one wall, several pieces of TV coverage were also on display.

We visited as three with my mother and ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table for 3.

It wasn't just one dish — sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) came as the centerpiece alongside tofu samhap, braised kodari (dried pollock), and a spread of side dishes.

How the Chodang Myeongpum set for 3 tasted

Pot of sundubu jjigae

The first thing I reached for was the sundubu jjigae. It had a generous amount of soft, cloud-like tofu, plus shiitake and enoki mushrooms, chives, and seafood.

Bubbling away, I took a spoonful and the tofu was smooth and mild,

and the broth had all the flavors from the ingredients blended together, easy on the stomach.

Tofu samhap with hand-made tofu, boiled pork, and gajami-sikhae

The tofu samhap came alongside — thickly sliced hand-made tofu, boiled pork, and gajami-sikhae (fermented flatfish with grain) eaten together.

Topping the mild tofu with tender boiled pork and a bit of gajami-sikhae added a tangy, savory kick — it was so good haha.

Braised kodari with sauce on top

The braised kodari came with sauce that looked delicious. The sweet-and-spicy sauce had soaked well into the fish, and it was incredibly tender.

The restaurant was also running an event where you get a sundubu pudding for writing a photo review. There are conditions like posting 2 photos and 5 keywords, so check the notice when you visit.

Final verdict on Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu

Since I was taking my mother out for breakfast, I was a little worried the food might be too heavy or spicy. But between the sundubu jjigae, tofu samhap, and kodari, there was enough variety that the three of us could share comfortably.

With the waiting area, the spacious interior, and baby chairs all in place, it's also a good spot for families. If you're hunting for a Chodang sundubu restaurant in Gangneung and want more than just a bowl of soft tofu, the Chodang Myeongpum table is worth checking out.
