Sokcho market jeotgal for homemade hoe-naengmyeon: Hwangbuja Jeotgal
In short
Hwangbuja Jeotgal is a salted seafood (jeotgal) shop at stall 25, near the entrance of Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market (Sokcho Central Market) in Gangwon. On a two-day trip to Sokcho, the writer's family tasted and then bought two items at Hwangbuja Jeotgal — octopus jeotgal and pollock hoe-muchim (spicy seasoned pollock) — ate them at home on white rice with sesame oil and sesame seeds, and used the pollock hoe-muchim as a topping for homemade hoe-naengmyeon (cold noodles with seasoned raw fish). Both were plumper and less salty than supermarket jeotgal, making Hwangbuja Jeotgal a satisfying buy for gifts and for eating at home.

I went on a two-day trip to Sokcho, and no Sokcho trip is complete without a stop at Sokcho Central Market : ) Here's my review of Hwangbuja Jeotgal, where I shopped with my family during the trip~!

Two picks at Hwangbuja Jeotgal: octopus jeotgal and pollock hoe-muchim
What I bought at Hwangbuja Jeotgal in Sokcho Central Market was octopus jeotgal (salted fermented octopus) and pollock hoe-muchim (seasoned raw pollock salad). My husband and I love jeotgal — it's the ultimate rice thief — so whenever we travel to the coast we tend to buy some. This time in Sokcho, we picked up two kinds at the jeotgal specialist Hwangbuja Jeotgal.

The salty octopus jeotgal is a rice thief all on its own, no other side dishes needed, and the pollock hoe is great as a naengmyeon topping or just as a regular banchan~ Both are so, so delicious side dishes^^

This is a jeotgal specialist in Sokcho Central Market that uses good raw ingredients, salt, chili powder and more~ You can taste before you buy, and the generous portions really gave off that warm market feeling!

Delivery, cold-pack packing and where to park at Sokcho Central Market
Hwangbuja Jeotgal sells many kinds of jeotgal so you can pick what suits your taste, and it can also be shipped by delivery, so if you like jeotgal you can easily order without visiting~ They also packed it with ice packs in a cold bag, so it stayed nicely chilled the whole way home^^
You can get here by public transit or by car~ When using Sokcho Central Market, I'd recommend parking at the Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market large parking lot — there's plenty of space^^ That's where we parked too.

Located near the entrance of Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market (Sokcho Central Market), Hwangbuja Jeotgal opens early in the morning. It runs from 8am to 8pm at night, so it's easy to stop by whenever's convenient.

What does octopus jeotgal taste like over white rice?
Back home, I tried Hwangbuja Jeotgal's octopus jeotgal over warm white rice. After bringing the jeotgal home, cooking other side dishes felt like too much work, so I just ate it with warm white rice~~ Wow.... the chewy octopus flavor really came through! And with a little sesame oil and sesame seeds sprinkled on top, the savory depth just exploded.

Sokcho jeotgal that you taste-test and choose yourself is on a whole different level from supermarket jeotgal! Plump, well-seasoned, and not too salty — truly delicious jeotgal : )

Making hoe-naengmyeon at home with pollock hoe-muchim
Hwangbuja Jeotgal's pollock hoe-muchim really showed its true colors when used as a topping for naengmyeon (cold noodles), turned into hoe-naengmyeon. Eating the pollock hoe on its own already had a nice sweetness and was really tasty~~ But the real value of this pollock hoe-muchim comes out when it's piled on top of naengmyeon as hoe-naengmyeon!

I tried making it into naengmyeon at home, and it genuinely beat naengmyeon I've bought outside^^ Yeah, hoe-naengmyeon with pollock hoe on top beats plain naengmyeon any day, right?

Hope you enjoyed this review of Hwangbuja Jeotgal, the jeotgal specialist at Sokcho Central Market~? It makes a great gift for older relatives, and I was fully satisfied buying it for myself to eat too — jeotgal shopping well spent!
How to store jeotgal at home
Apparently just refrigerating jeotgal isn't enough! Even in the fridge it can spoil, so portioning it out is really important! Put a small amount you'll eat soon into a separate side-dish container~ and split the rest into suitable portions and store them in the freezer^^ That way you can keep it a long time without worrying about spoilage, so be sure to freeze it~
That said, the freezer isn't invincible either~ so either way, it's best to just buy an amount that suits you : )
