Halibut and rockfish sashimi to go at Jumunjin Market, Gangneung

In short

Ilchul Hoetjip is a raw fish and seafood restaurant inside Jumunjin Fisheries Market in Gangneung. A small halibut and rockfish sashimi platter reserved in advance for ₩50,000 came with wrapping greens, whelk, shrimp and abalone, and was eaten for dinner at a private pension. The takeout setup suited travelers who'd rather eat comfortably at their accommodation than sit down at the shop.

Jumunjin Market sashimi to go, perfect for eating at the pension

When you're looking for a hoetjip (raw fish restaurant) in Jumunjin, going in without a plan can mean a lot of standing around deciding. Especially if you're taking the sashimi back to your accommodation, the amount, the composition, and how it's packed all matter.

Preparing the sashimi takeout from Jumunjin Fisheries Market

We were staying at a private pension, so instead of going out for dinner we wanted to relax with sashimi and drinks at the accommodation. While reading reviews of Jumunjin Fisheries Market, Ilchul Hoetjip looked good, so we reserved sashimi ahead of time. Bottom line first: it was a totally satisfying dinner for the pension.

Why we picked Ilchul Hoetjip among Jumunjin's sashimi restaurants

When you're around Jumunjin during a Gangneung trip, there are really so many places for sashimi, snow crab, and seafood. Lots of options is great, but actually choosing gets harder. Since our goal was eating comfortably at the pension rather than dining in for a long time, we looked for a Jumunjin hoetjip with clean takeout packaging.

Ilchul Hoetjip's reviews had a good vibe, and being inside Jumunjin Fisheries Market made it look easy to get to. Above all, being able to reserve ahead and pick it up right on time fit our travel schedule well.

Cutting down on waiting time while traveling matters more than you'd think, don't you agree?

The small halibut and rockfish sashimi takeout

It cost ₩50,000, and we ordered it in advance to eat as dinner at the accommodation. Honestly, since it was the small size, we didn't expect a huge amount. But once we got it, the composition was richer than expected. It wasn't just sashimi on its own — they packed it like a set with wrapping greens, and seafood like whelk, shrimp, and abalone. Once we spread it out on the pension table, it didn't feel like a simple snack — it felt like a proper dinner spread.

The takeout packaging was great

I think the most important thing about sashimi takeout in Jumunjin is the composition. When you're eating at your accommodation, it's kind of a hassle if you're missing even one thing and have to go buy it separately. Ilchul Hoetjip packed the wrapping greens along with everything else, and the sashimi and seafood were neatly wrapped, so it was ready to eat right when we got to the pension.

Halibut and rockfish sashimi packed together with wrapping greens

The halibut and rockfish had absolutely no fishy smell, and the texture was firm and springy. Every bite had a satisfying chew that was clearly different from supermarket sashimi. Especially wearing comfy clothes at the pension with a piece of sashimi and a drink — that felt like the real taste of travel.

How was the sashimi itself?

The halibut was clean-tasting, and the rockfish had a firmer texture. Ordering both together made it fun to alternate between the two. I'm someone who stops eating immediately if sashimi smells fishy, but there was none of that here. Wrapping the sashimi in greens with a bit of garlic and chili made a perfect drinking snack. Even though it was the small size, the portion was generous enough to stand in for dinner.

Why does Jumunjin Market sashimi takeout suit a pension trip so well? Eating out is great, but there's a different kind of relaxed enjoyment in eating comfortably at your accommodation.

Finished it off by cooking seafood ramyeon

Ramyeon, bean sprouts, and seafood prepped for cooking

We felt like sashimi alone wasn't quite enough, so we stopped by a supermarket and bought ramyeon (instant noodles) and bean sprouts. Then we added the chili and garlic that Ilchul Hoetjip had packed for us and made a spicy seafood ramyeon. Adding in seafood like whelk, shrimp, and abalone really brought the broth to life. The bean sprouts gave it a refreshing flavor, and the chili and garlic gave it just the right kick. Taking a bite of hot ramyeon broth in between sashimi bites was genuinely happiness.

If you're having dinner at your accommodation, I really recommend this combo. Just pick up sashimi to go and grab ramyeon and bean sprouts at the supermarket, and your pension dinner course is complete.

A note for those looking for Jumunjin snow crab

Plenty of people looking for Jumunjin snow crab also head to the fisheries market area. On this trip, we went with simple sashimi takeout instead of crab. Especially for a private pension or family accommodation, takeout can sometimes be more satisfying than eating in the shop. Eating comfortably at our accommodation was definitely the better choice for us.

Parking and access

Ilchul Hoetjip also had good parking access.

The parking tower at Jumunjin Fisheries Market

Around Jumunjin Fisheries Market, parking can be a worry when it's crowded, but here there's a well-built parking tower that made it easy to bring a car. The walk from parking to the shop was short too, so the route to pick up sashimi was quick.

Carrying heavy takeout food a long distance while traveling is kind of tiring. But being able to park and pick up right away made the access really convenient. Reserving ahead, arriving on time, and picking it up right there — the whole flow was smooth.

Who this is for

For anyone looking for a sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin who wants to eat takeout sashimi at their accommodation, I recommend Ilchul Hoetjip. If it's a private pension, family stay, or a trip drinking with friends, takeout might be more comfortable than eating in the shop. Next time I'm in Jumunjin, I'll probably reserve ahead again and do the sashimi-and-ramyeon combo at the accommodation.
