I visited Baekho Tteokbang, a great rice cake shop in Nam-gu, Ulsan.

I kept thinking about Baekho Tteokbang, so I went back to get a Chuseok gift for my parents. I usually enjoy chewy, soft tteok (Korean rice cakes) as dessert. In particular, pumpkin injeolmi—soft and springy inside, piled high with castella cake crumbs—is one of my all-time favorite desserts!

Even when I'm dieting, I find myself craving thoughtfully made rice cakes that sit more comfortably than bread. Since I was buying a gift for my parents anyway, I made another trip to my favorite rice cake shop, Baekho Tteokbang.

It is conveniently located near Samsan-dong and Sinjeong-dong in Nam-gu, and once you taste it, you immediately understand why everyone nearby recommends it: the flavor, value, and portions are all satisfying.

Baekho Tteokbang is on the first floor of a mixed-use commercial building on Beonyeong-ro in Nam-gu, so it is easy to find. With Ulsan Culture & Arts Center and KBS Ulsan nearby, it is also perfectly located for picking up rice cakes and taking a light walk.
Parking tips

The building's basement parking was very convenient! If you are only making a quick rice cake pickup, you can also briefly stop by the curb in front of the shop. Using parking around KBS or the Culture & Arts Center nearby is easy as well.
Hours run until 5 p.m., but because everything is handmade fresh that morning, the rice cakes you want may sell out if you arrive even a little late.

I visited late on a Friday afternoon, right before closing, and I nearly had to leave empty-handed because they were almost out of rice cakes! Thankfully, I was able to buy what was left, but if there is a particular kind you want, I strongly recommend reserving ahead or checking the stock before you visit!
Baekho Tteokbang signature items and my honest review
Baekho Tteok: castella pumpkin injeolmi

This yellow pumpkin injeolmi is made with 100% Ulsan Bokjori glutinous rice and kabocha pumpkin, then generously coated with cloud-soft castella cake crumbs.

Take one bite and the soft, chewy rice cake texture comes with a subtle pumpkin aroma. The sweetness is nutty and refined rather than artificially intense. The portion is generous, too—when you take out a piece, plenty of castella crumbs are still left on the bottom of the box.
Heukho Tteok: black sesame pumpkin injeolmi

Inside is bright yellow pumpkin glutinous rice cake, while the outside is generously covered in black sesame crumbs. The more you chew, the more the intensely nutty black sesame and chewy pumpkin injeolmi come together—an absolutely perfect match for grown-up tastes.
- Baekho Tteok: when you want a sweet, soft dessert-like treat
- Heukho Tteok: when you want a mild flavor with deep nuttiness
Homemade sweet pumpkin sikhye
This homemade sweet pumpkin sikhye (sweet rice drink) is a must-buy with the rice cakes. It is not merely overly sweet like a ready-made sikhye; it has the soft, rich flavor of pumpkin itself, as though it had been carefully simmered at home. A piece of rice cake with a cold glass of sikhye makes a wonderfully neat meal substitute, too.
Why it makes a great gift for parents and Chuseok

They can be kept at room temperature for about a day. If you want to keep them any longer, freeze them right away and thaw them naturally before eating; that brings back their original moist, chewy texture.
This time, I brought home plenty to divide up and keep in the freezer for my parents. They are not too sweet yet feel refined, and the packaging is neat, so I thought they would make truly lovely upcoming Chuseok gifts or thank-you gifts. It is a flavor that everyone, regardless of age or gender, can enjoy, making it just right for sharing your feelings with relatives or parents over the holidays.

If you are looking for properly handmade pumpkin injeolmi or a refined thank-you or holiday gift in Ulsan, be sure to stop by Baekho Tteokbang in Sinjeong-dong/Samsan-dong, Nam-gu. And do not forget to contact them before visiting so you do not make a wasted trip!
