In short

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu is a shabu-shabu restaurant in Nam-gu, Busan. I enjoyed a spicy-broth course with sirloin, hand-made kalguksu noodles, sujebi dough flakes, fresh kimchi, and perilla-oil water-parsley fried rice for 11,000 won per person. Verdict: a filling, family-friendly meal with excellent value.

As the crisp autumn breeze starts to roll in, you know how you suddenly crave shabu-shabu—swishing meat through a hot, spicy broth, right~?! With the mornings and evenings getting chilly, I was desperate for a warm soup dish with chewy sujebi (hand-torn dough flakes) and slurpable noodles,, ㅠㅠ So I finally went to Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu, which I’d had my eye on for ages!

Parking is always the biggest concern when eating out in Busan, right? This place has a spacious dedicated parking lot on B1 of the building, plus a whopping two hours of free parking, so it felt completely reassuring for a family meal by car 🚗

A white-toned dining room with café vibes

The moment I walked in, the stylish white café-like interior made me think, “Is this really a shabu-shabu place?” and instantly lifted my mood 🌿

White café-inspired restaurant interior
Shabu-shabu dining room with widely spaced tables

True to a place that has only recently reopened after remodeling, the ventilation was fresh and the tables were nicely spaced, with none of that cramped feeling! I visited late in the evening, close to last order, yet the wide dining room was packed without an empty seat. That was when I really realized this spot had already become a word-of-mouth favorite in Munhyeon-dong 🔥

There was such a wide range of guests too, from families with little children to groups and dating couples! There were plenty of high chairs around, and each table had a tablet ordering kiosk, so I could order comfortably with a few taps without calling over a staff member. So convenient 💕

What comes with the ₩11,000 shabu kalguksu set

I sat down and slowly flipped through the tablet menu to check the prices, and the value for shabu-shabu in Munhyeon-dong was honestly so surprising I had to look twice 📜

Side dishes and add-on menu information
  • The shabu kalguksu set is ₩11,000 per person and includes 70 g of Choice-grade beef sirloin, oyster mushrooms, water parsley, fresh kalguksu noodles made in-house after two years of research, and perilla-oil water-parsley fried rice.
  • Choose between a clear white broth and a spicy red broth, with mild, regular, and spicy heat levels.
  • Sides and add-ons include seafood pajeon (Korean savory pancake) for ₩16,000, extra sirloin, extra sujebi, and extra vegetables.

At a time when prices are so high, I could not help being impressed that two people can eat until completely stuffed for a basic total of ₩22,000 👍🏻 A note at the side of the table even explained how to cook and enjoy the shabu-shabu, kalguksu, and fried rice in order for the best result, so even first-timers can enjoy it without a misstep! They also offer sirloin through a Naver receipt-review event, so do give it a try~

Sirloin and extra sujebi in spicy broth

We were craving a hot, savory-spicy broth, so we neatly ordered two portions of spicy shabu kalguksu, extra sirloin to make it filling, and an extra serving of the sujebi we had been eagerly anticipating 😋

At last, the hot-pot pan arrived piled high like a mountain with mushrooms and bright green water parsley, alongside beautifully red beef sirloin 🥩

They say they insist on only freshly butchered meat, whether U.S. Choice chuck eye roll or Australian S-grade beef, and even by sight the meat looked remarkably clear in color with fine marbling! Perhaps because this popular Munhyeon-dong restaurant has such quick turnover, every ingredient felt exceptionally fresh.

I gently swished thin slices of sirloin through the bubbling spicy broth, then wrapped them with crisp water parsley and chewy mushrooms and dipped them into the special wasabi soy sauce~! There was not even a trace of odor or toughness; the savory juices melted away with the fragrant water parsley, and I kept exclaiming from the very first bite 💛

A self-serve bar for refilling fresh kimchi and kkakdugi

After ordering, I headed to the clean self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant 🥬

It was generously stocked with fresh geotjeori kimchi, made daily with Korean cabbage using a recipe the owner learned from a kimchi master in Mokpo after traveling the country personally! The first bite filled my mouth with the savory depth of salted seafood and the crisp, sweet flavor of cabbage—I immediately understood why the owner is so proud of the kimchi, haha.

There was refreshing kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) too. It was such a true rice thief that I cleared my plate and went back to refill it several times even before the kalguksu arrived 👏🏻

House-made kalguksu and chewy sujebi

We polished off the meat in no time and finally moved on to the noodle time I had been waiting for 🥢

House-made kalguksu and sujebi

I had already guessed from the sacks of premium noodle flour stacked high by the entrance, but seeing the served noodles and sujebi confirmed that they were in a completely different league from commercially frozen noodles thawed after factory delivery! They still had all the moist freshness of dough made and rolled out that day.

I put all the sujebi and kalguksu into the broth and let them bubble away before digging in~! The slippery, soft swallow of hand-cut kalguksu was wonderfully blended with the weighty, springy chew of Sanuki udon, making every bite such a joy ㅠㅠ With absolutely no raw flour taste, the broth had soaked right into the noodles; topped with Korean cabbage kimchi, I could have eaten endlessly,,

For a cool palate cleanser, the Chilsung Cider I ordered came in a nostalgic green glass bottle that is rare to see these days, and it hit my retro-loving taste perfectly 💚

The finale of a shabu kalguksu course has to be fried rice, of course 🍳 The subtle aroma of perilla oil, the crisp scorched rice lightly stuck to the bottom, and the clean fragrance of water parsley came together so well that even though I felt ready to burst, I scraped up every last bit, haha. For ₩11,000 per person, the full course of meat, vegetables, house-made noodles, and fried rice was such a satisfying meal that not a single won felt wasted ✨

Things to know before visiting

Guests dining at the restaurant receive two hours of free parking when using the building’s B1 parking lot.

There is also a mild, clean, deeply flavored white broth for those who do not eat spicy food, and the heat can be selected as mild, regular, or spicy, so children and older diners can enjoy it too. The restaurant says its kalguksu noodles and sujebi are fresh, made in-house every day by mixing, aging, and rolling the dough while adjusting for temperature and humidity.

Final thoughts

The textbook Munhyeon-dong shabu-shabu meal for feeding the whole family well: chewy house-made noodles developed over two years, Mokpo-master kimchi, water-parsley fried rice, and two hours of free parking, all for ₩11,000 per person! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a high-quality full-course meal at an easygoing price, a family meal in a pleasant café-like dining room, or chewy noodles and fresh geotjeori made daily.
