Jeonju dakgangjeong shop on Taejo-ro for a guesthouse night snack
In short
Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store is a dakgangjeong (Korean sweet-and-crispy fried chicken) restaurant on Taejo-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village. After a full day walking around the village, the writer ordered a medium shrimp and boneless chicken dakgangjeong with 5 sweet potato cheese sticks and jjondeugi (chewy fried rice snack) to take back to the guesthouse as a late-night snack. The medium size was generous for the price, and because the chicken is boneless it stayed easy to pick at slowly out of the takeout box.

When you visit Jeonju Hanok Village, there's just so much you want to try, right? This day too, we walked around the village all day eating one delicious thing after another, and while looking for something simple to take back before heading into our accommodation, we stopped by Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store. I'd heard it was a popular spot for dakgangjeong in the hanok village, so I was curious — and they said it's just as good packed to go as eaten right there, so we gave it a try.

Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store is located on Taejo-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village, so it was easy to stop by while sightseeing. When traveling, I find it more convenient to grab takeout along the route I'm already walking rather than going out of my way for a meal.

Menu lineup at Mannyeon Dakgangjeong and what we ordered
True to being a dakgangjeong specialty shop, Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store had a wide range of options from boneless dakgangjeong to fried chicken and shrimp gangjeong, plus plenty of sides to pair with them. The boneless dakgangjeong lets you choose your flavor, and there's also a combo where you can have shrimp and chicken together, so we picked that to try a bit of everything.

- Shrimp+chicken dakgangjeong (medium)
- Sweet potato cheese sticks 5P
- Jjondeugi
This is what we ended up ordering. We'd already eaten so much around Jeonju that we meant to keep it simple this time, but once we started looking at the menu we got curious about everything and ended up ordering sides too, haha.

Medium shrimp and boneless chicken dakgangjeong: how much do you get, and how does it taste?
Since it was labeled medium, I figured the shrimp+chicken dakgangjeong wouldn't be much, but when we opened the box it was more generous than expected. Having shrimp gangjeong alongside the chicken was great too — being able to alternate between the two rather than eating just chicken made it more fun.
The dakgangjeong looked appetizing right away, with sauce coating every piece evenly. The flavor was sweet with a slight kick of spice, the kind of taste that keeps you reaching for more, and the sauce wasn't too heavy, so it was easy to keep eating piece after piece.

The boneless chicken tucked inside the crispy coating made it easy to eat — the outside held the sauce well while the inside stayed soft and juicy rather than dry. Being boneless definitely made it more convenient to pack and eat while traveling.
There's the joy of eating it piping hot right away, but there's also something to picking pieces one by one after it's cooled a bit, isn't there? It was a good fit for eating slowly back at the accommodation or as a late-night snack while traveling.

Shrimp gangjeong or boneless chicken: switching between the two
Even though the shrimp and chicken were coated in the same sauce, the texture was completely different when you bit into them, which made switching between the two fun. After enjoying the soft texture of the dakgangjeong, biting into the shrimp gangjeong and getting that springy shrimp texture inside was really nice.
Personally, I liked being able to try both chicken and shrimp in one combo rather than eating just one thing the whole time. If you're sharing between two people and want to taste a bit of everything, this combo was a good pick.

The sides: sweet potato cheese sticks and jjondeugi
The sweet potato cheese sticks 5P were fried crispy on the outside, with sweet sweet potato and savory cheese inside — good to nibble on between bites of dakgangjeong. Switching from the salty-sweet dakgangjeong to a cheese stick brought a whole different kind of sweetness and savoriness, so it made for a good combination as a side. Warm, the cheese inside stretched softly and the sweet potato's sweetness came through even more, which made it taste even better.
Sweet potato and cheese is hard to get wrong, right, haha. Crispy outside, soft inside, sweet and savory — I really enjoyed it.

The jjondeugi was also easy to just pick up and eat. Chewy with that distinct savory flavor. It was nice to nibble on lightly between the heartier bites of dakgangjeong, so ordering it alongside was worth it.
Is Mannyeon Dakgangjeong worth packing as a night snack in Jeonju Hanok Village?
Laid out together, the shrimp+chicken dakgangjeong with the sweet potato cheese sticks and jjondeugi ended up being more filling than expected. We'd already eaten a lot around Jeonju Hanok Village that day and meant to keep this one simple, but we ended up eating well again, haha.
Especially when traveling, sitting down for another full meal at a restaurant can feel like a lot, but just going straight back to the accommodation can feel like something's missing too. That's when something like dakgangjeong, which you can pack up and eat slowly, comes in handy.
It's easy to carry around, so it's good to eat while browsing the hanok village if you get hungry, or, like us, to pack before heading into your accommodation for a late-night snack. Even if you can't finish it all at once, it's the kind of menu that's easy to pick at little by little, which made it a great fit as travel takeout.
It was great being able to try shrimp and chicken dakgangjeong together, and adding the sweet potato cheese sticks and jjondeugi meant we got to pick and choose between different types, which was fun.
If you're looking for a simple street food bite in Jeonju Hanok Village or a late-night snack for your accommodation, Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store is worth grabbing takeout from. It's good eaten right away while sightseeing the hanok village or carried back to your accommodation, and it made for a satisfying meal during our Jeonju trip.
