Jeonju Hanok Village skewer takeout for a movie night: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch (문꼬치문강정) is an octopus skewer and octopus gangjeong shop on Eunhaeng-ro inside Jeonju Hanok Village. This visit ordered the katsuo octopus skewer (5,000 won), the mild mala chicken skewer (5,500 won) and the cheese octopus gangjeong (9,500 won) to take away, then ate all three with non-alcoholic beer while watching a movie at the hotel, with only about 5 minutes of waiting. The mala heat at Munkkocchi stays gentle enough for anyone, and the cheese octopus gangjeong is best eaten warm before the cheese firms up.

Cheese octopus gangjeong and a three-item late-night snack spread

Cheese octopus gangjeong topped generously with cheese

The cheese octopus gangjeong arrived. I was surprised at how much cheese was sprinkled on it. The owner's generosity with ingredients...!

Of course, since it's a snack with cheese in it, you should eat it before the cheese cools and sets — it's much tastier that way :D

Chewy inside of the octopus gangjeong

It feels a bit different from takoyaki. Maybe because it's gangjeong, it's chewier and nuttier.

For skewers, we ordered katsuo octopus and mala chicken. I was curious what a mala-flavored chicken skewer would taste like.

How spicy is the mild mala chicken skewer?

We ordered the mild version of the mala chicken skewer, and I liked that the mala flavor came through only very lightly. Mala tends to be love-it-or-hate-it, right? But I ate it without any hesitation. It would be good spicy too!

Is the katsuo octopus skewer different from takoyaki?

The katsuo octopus skewer was really nutty and savory. The ingredients are similar to takoyaki so I thought it would taste similar, but personally I found it lacked the greasiness of takoyaki, making it more clean and light to enjoy :D

Since I was eating skewers while watching a movie, I took all the meat off the skewers beforehand in case the sauce started dripping.

Eating the octopus skewer with chopsticks

With chopsticks I'd brought along, I enjoyed the octopus skewers piece by piece while watching a movie! The skewers I always used to eat before were chicken skewers, so this was my first time trying octopus skewers, and they were lighter and cleaner-tasting.
