Yangju Okjeong tonkatsu with 20:55 last order: Himawari Assorted A

In short

Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant on the first floor of Dream Tower 2 in Okjeong-dong, Yangju, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the sweet potato cheese katsu set, Himawari Assorted A with hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet) and Assorted C with the ebi fry swapped for cheese katsu, dipping each piece in a sauce made from sesame seeds ground at the table, and found it notable that Himawari still takes orders until 20:55, five minutes before the 21:00 close. With 3 hours of free parking at Dream Tower 2, Himawari is an easy choice for tonkatsu in Okjeong-dong.

What kind of tonkatsu restaurant is Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch?

Today I came to 'Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch,' a tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) spot known well in Okjeong-dong, Yangju. They say the owner has spent 20 years researching tonkatsu to make a crispy, grease-free cutlet with no synthetic additives.

They also take real pride in the rice, cooking it fresh and glossy every morning with the pairing with tonkatsu in mind — apparently some customers come just for the rice. Both the cutlet and the rice really were delicious.

Grinding your own sesame tonkatsu sauce and the salad dressing

They gave us barley tea for water, along with sesame seeds. Next to the table were tonkatsu sauce, shichimi, mustard, sesame dressing, and yuzu dressing.

I liked the yuzu dressing best, but my family preferred the sesame dressing, so I'd recommend everyone drizzling whichever dressing suits their taste on the salad!

They bring the sesame seeds to grind yourself before the food arrives, and grinding them fills the air with a nutty smell that puts you in a good mood right away.

After grinding the sesame, mix in a bit of tonkatsu sauce and mustard, and you get a nutty sauce with a slight tingle of mustard heat.

How Assorted A hire katsu, sweet potato cheese katsu and cheese katsu taste

After a short wait the food came out, in order: Assorted Katsu A (hire katsu), sweet potato cheese katsu, and Assorted Katsu C (fish katsu, with ebi fry swapped for cheese katsu).

The assorted katsu came with hire katsu, ebi fry (fried shrimp), and crab croquette. The hire katsu was crispy and delicious, clearly fried with real skill. The ebi fry had big, juicy shrimp, and the crab croquette had a really soft filling — a perfect crispy-outside, tender-inside menu.

The sweet potato cheese katsu is limited in quantity, so you'll need to come early if you want to try it. It seemed like they mashed real sweet potato inside rather than using a store-bought sweet potato mousse. Maybe because of that, it was wonderfully soft, nutty, and sweet.

It was also really big, packed with so much sweet potato that it felt genuinely heavy when I lifted it with chopsticks! It was so heavy I ended up just... stabbing it to eat it 🤭

The cheese katsu had really big cheese and ham inside, and the cheese seemed to be a good-quality mozzarella — it stretched without snapping and wasn't greasy at all. Like the sweet potato cheese katsu, this one was so heavy my wrist actually got tired, haha.

It was packed full of cheese, nutty and delicious — honestly, I think it might be the best cheese katsu I've ever had in my life.

The interior isn't huge, but it has a cozy atmosphere and there's even group seating, which was nice. The sunflower painting adds a nice touch, and every seat and light fixture is pretty.
