A day for eating beef is one you have to really commit to, right? So once I find a place I like, I keep going back. At around 8 p.m. the other evening, my husband and I went to Galpungjip Yangju Okjeong Branch (갈풍집 양주옥정점).

This was already our second visit, and this time the complimentary table spread alone made me gasp. We cleared everything, from the garlic-marinated beef ribs to the soybean paste stew.

A spacious dining room and free parking—how was it for a family meal?

As soon as you enter, the open scale of the restaurant catches your eye. It occupies two units, 110 and 111, on the first floor of First Plaza, so the dining room is truly spacious. With generous space between tables, it worked comfortably for group gatherings, family meals, and dates alike.

There were lots of families there that day too. They even have an arcade machine for tables with children, so the kids did not seem to have a chance to get bored. For parking, use the building's underground lot. It was spacious and pleasant, so we did not have to drive around in circles looking for a spot. They gave us 2–3 hours of free parking, which meant we could eat leisurely without watching the clock.

Four servings of garlic-marinated beef ribs over charcoal

We ordered four servings of garlic-marinated beef ribs: 600g in total at 150g each. The beef ribs were spread neatly across the plate, glossy and pale pink, and they looked fresh at a glance.

They came with king oyster mushrooms and green onion, which you can grill alongside the meat. What I care about most at a barbecue restaurant is a roaring charcoal fire, and Galpungjip had a strong one again this time, so there was nothing to worry about. Since the heat is high, the key is to turn the meat often so it does not burn.

When I picked up a nicely browned piece of beef rib and popped it into my mouth, a gentle garlic aroma spread through it. The marinade was not overpowering and blended in just right, while the juices softly flowed out, so I never got tired of it. It really is a proper beef restaurant.

The complimentary spread and Gangwon-style homemade soybean paste stew

Honestly, the most memorable part of this visit was the complimentary table spread. It was neatly laid out with two sauces, ponytail radish kimchi, green-onion kimchi, gungchae, seasoned lettuce, cabbage, chili peppers, garlic, and ssamjang. With several kinds of kimchi, it was fun choosing what to eat.

Crisp green-onion kimchi wrapped around the beef ribs is a perfect match. Grill the cabbage lightly on the griddle and its sweetness really comes alive. And what I truly want to praise is the complimentary soybean paste stew.

Made with homemade soybean paste from Gangwon Province, it was deep and savory. The tofu and potatoes came in big chunks, so every spoonful felt filling. A spoonful between bites of meat completely refreshed my palate. I was amazed all over again by such generosity when it is included with the meal.

A spoonful of soybean paste stew in minjji bibimbap

Even though we were full, we still had to order the minjji bibimbap. It was generously filled with lettuce, sautéed mushrooms, and minced meat. Scoop a generous spoonful of soybean paste stew into it and mix it all together. It becomes much smoother, and the savory flavor really comes alive. The gentle aroma of oil made it an excellent finish.

Visit tips and my verdict after a second visit

It is a truly good beef spot, with neither the meat nor the side dishes falling short.

  • Reservation tip: There may be a wait, so booking through Naver Reservation before visiting is a good idea. It opens at 17:00, closes at 23:00, and last order is at 22:00.
  • Good for gatherings: The dining room is spacious and there is an arcade machine, making it ideal for family meals with children.
  • Eating tip: Grill the cabbage, and add a spoonful of soybean paste stew to the bibimbap.
