While looking for a good samgyeopsal spot in Okjeong, Yangju, I ended up visiting Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch 😊

I really love meat in general, but even the best cut can taste totally different depending on how it's grilled. What drew me to Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is that staff grill the meat for you, so you can just relax and eat!
What Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is like inside
Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch sits on Okjeongdong-ro 7da-gil in Yangju, and the exterior alone felt quite spacious. The sign was big and easy to spot, and once inside, there were plenty of seats.

The wood-toned interior overall felt open, with enough space between tables for family meals or group dinners. And for a barbecue place, the interior was kept impressively clean — a great first impression :)

How much is pork belly for two at Mat Chandeul?
Our main order was two servings of aged fresh pork belly! At ₩17,000 per serving, that came to ₩34,000 for two, and we also added kimchi stew, bibim naengsomyeon (cold mixed noodles), and rice.

The side dishes were surprisingly varied too — lettuce wraps, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), wasabi, salted seafood, and several other accompaniments, so every bite of pork belly could be a different combination 😋 And the best part was still having someone else do the grilling!
Thick-cut aged pork belly grilled by the staff
At Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch, the thick aged fresh pork belly is cut into bite-sized pieces and grilled by staff right at the table. The outside came out perfectly golden while the inside stayed juicy.

Since the cuts are pretty thick, grilling them yourself risks overcooking the outside before the inside is done — but with a pro doing it, everything came off the grill at just the right moment.

You can tell from the photo alone how golden the surface got, right? 🤤

It was savory and juicy on its own, but Mat Chandeul's charm really came through with the side dishes. Topping a well-grilled piece with pickled vegetables, or a bit of salty myeongran (seasoned pollock roe), or pairing it with grilled kimchi all worked beautifully. Mixing up combinations bite after bite meant our two servings disappeared fast, haha.

I especially loved the aged kimchi grilled alongside the meat. Soaking up the pork belly fat, it turns slightly golden and the umami really pops — putting that on top of the pork belly is a combo that never fails 👍 And once you've had enough meat, the rice dishes are not to be skipped!
Aged kimchi stew and cold mixed noodles: are the sides worth it?
The kimchi stew we ordered came out bubbling in a stone pot, and it looked the part right away. With well-fermented kimchi, tofu, and meat inside, the broth was rich and spicy.

Halfway through the pork belly you start craving something hot and spicy, and a spoonful of this cleared the palate right up! Adding a bowl of rice made for a hearty finish 🍚 And personally, the dish I'd been most looking forward to after the meat was the bibim naengsomyeon.

It arrived topped with a generous layer of ice shavings, cooling just to look at ❄️. Mixing the noodles with the seaweed flakes and vegetables made a perfect palate cleanser after all the meat. I'd also recommend pairing a bite of cold, tangy noodles with a piece of pork belly.
Is Mat Chandeul in Okjeong good for a date or family dinner?
After eating everything, I understood why Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch has been a go-to barbecue spot in Okjeong for so long.

The meat was thick yet tender, and since staff grill it perfectly for you, you can eat and chat without worrying about the grill — a big plus. On dates, it's common for one person to be stuck grilling the whole time, but here both people can relax and eat, which makes it a good date spot too 😊

From the varied side dishes to sides like the kimchi stew and cold mixed noodles, I left really full after one meal. If you're searching for a samgyeopsal restaurant in Okjeong and like thick aged pork belly or prefer somewhere that grills it for you, this place is worth a visit! If you're looking for a spot for a family meal, date, or gathering in Okjeong, Yangju, I'd recommend Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch 🥰
