Truffle oil and salt tonkatsu in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul: Katsu Monster
In short
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a Japanese tonkatsu restaurant in a Yeonnam-dong alley near Hongik University Station and Yeontral Park in Mapo, Seoul. Stopping in on the way to the Park Seo-bo Art Museum, we ordered hirekatsu (fillet cutlet) and rosukatsu (loin cutlet), which arrived with truffle oil, fresh wasabi and salt beside the house sauce, so each cut could be dipped differently. The rosukatsu tasted best with wasabi and salt, while the hirekatsu suited the house sauce.

A satisfying meal in the middle of a busy day does more than fill you up — it washes away the day's fatigue and gives you a real boost of energy, right??? On the way to the Park Seo-bo Art Museum we got hungry and stopped by Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, a well-known Yeonnam-dong favorite :)

We took our time on a relaxed weekend walk toward a street that never stops drawing food lovers and trendsetters.

The area around Yeontral Park near Hongik University Station is always full of lively energy, and today I want to introduce a special Yeonnam-dong restaurant where you can enjoy truly excellent Japanese food.

That restaurant is today's star: Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, already famous among food bloggers and on social media as a life-changing tonkatsu spot ♡
Where is Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, and what is it like inside?
Walk calmly along a Yeonnam-dong alley and you'll be caught by the clean, stylish exterior of Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch. Anyone who's explored Hongdae's restaurant scene thoroughly has probably heard of this place, which has a solid fan base.
It's very accessible overall, making it a great Yeonnam-dong date spot to visit with someone special, and the comfortable bar seating inside also makes it perfectly suited for a relaxed solo meal in Yeonnam-dong without worrying about anyone's stares.

If you're looking for a light yet hearty Yeonnam-dong lunch in a lively atmosphere, you won't find many better options. On cool, clear days there's also the charm of the outdoor terrace seating, letting you soak in the exotic feel around the shop — it's a different kind of pleasure every time I visit~!!

What we ordered at Katsu Monster: hirekatsu and rosukatsu
With excitement, we ordered the two most popular signature items: hirekatsu (fillet cutlet) and rosukatsu (loin cutlet).

Since everything is cooked to order with fresh ingredients, there's a short wait before it reaches the table — but even that wait is filled with anticipation. When the neatly arranged wood tray finally arrived, the savory warmth and aroma of freshly fried katsu hit us and made it impossible to resist.

How did the rosukatsu (loin cutlet) taste?
The rosukatsu we tried first had a beautiful ratio of fat to lean meat, impressive even just to look at. With the first bite of hirekatsu and rosukatsu together, it melted in the mouth while the breading stayed absolutely crisp — the kind of bite that draws out praise on its own.

The outer breading was light and crunchy while the inside stayed moist and juicy, releasing more savory flavor with every bite. There wasn't a hint of gamey smell — just the clean, deep umami of carefully selected domestic pork, which was genuinely impressive.

How crisp and tender was the hirekatsu (fillet cutlet)?
Hirekatsu
The hirekatsu we tried next lived up to expectations completely, with excellent finished quality. The tenderness unique to the fillet was maximized, giving it a texture almost as soft as good-quality cheese — truly a standout bite.

Despite its thick cut, there was no dryness at all — it seemed to melt away in the mouth like snow. From the very first piece, you could tell fresh, high-quality meat had been carefully fried with real attention to detail.

Lately more and more international visitors have been finding their way here through word of mouth, and eating in the restaurant myself made it clear exactly why. This was authentic Japanese cooking recreated with such deep flavor and craftsmanship that you wouldn't need to book an expensive flight to Japan just to try real tonkatsu.
If you want to try high-quality, carefully made tonkatsu in Yeonnam-dong, this is a genuine Yeonnam-dong restaurant that belongs on your list. The variety of condiments to pair with each bite made the meal even more enjoyable~~~
Truffle oil, fresh wasabi or salt: which dip worked best?

Besides the standard house sauce, the table also came with luxurious truffle oil, clean-tasting fresh wasabi, and umami-boosting salt, letting us enjoy each cut of katsu exactly to our taste.

For the rosukatsu, a touch of sharp wasabi dipped in salt gave the cleanest, most refined flavor, while the softer hirekatsu reached its full potential paired with the sweet, deep house sauce.

Is Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch worth a visit?
If you want to properly experience Japanese food in Yeonnam-dong or want a meal that simply can't go wrong, I confidently recommend Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch.
The taste, the clean atmosphere, and the attentive, friendly service all came together for a fully satisfying visit. This is a place I'll likely keep coming back to as a favorite spot for good food memories.
