Seohae Korean restaurant meal with siraegi pollock: Hangsangcharim

In short

Hangsangcharim Kodari Myeongga Ruwon City Branch is a braised pollock restaurant in Seohae, Incheon. My friend and I enjoyed siraegi braised pollock, pot-cooked rice, and plenty of side dishes; the seasoning was pleasantly spicy rather than overwhelming. Verdict: pair the siraegi pollock with the pot-cooked rice.

Today's order: siraegi braised pollock

Siraegi braised pollock ordered today

The dish we chose that day was siraegi braised pollock.

Braised pollock served with siraegi

Large pieces of pollock arrived with a generous serving of siraegi (dried radish greens), and it looked delicious even before we started. When I tried the pollock with plenty of sauce, the flesh was tender yet nice and thick, with a satisfying bite.

What I liked most was that the seasoning was not excessively intense. It was definitely spicy, but not enough to make my mouth tingle; it had just the right heat and savory depth that kept calling for another bite of rice.

Seasoned siraegi and pollock flesh

The siraegi had soaked up the seasoning well, so it went wonderfully with the pollock. Its soft texture added something different from eating the kodari (semi-dried pollock) alone, and I kept reaching for my chopsticks.

Braised pollock tastes even better wrapped in seaweed

The braised pollock was good on its own, but I also really loved wrapping pollock, siraegi, and rice together in gim (roasted seaweed). The nutty seaweed complemented the seasoned fish, and the warm rice made every bite feel full and complete. Add side dishes such as bean sprouts, and you get a crisp texture for a different way to enjoy it. The sample post also recommended wrapping pollock, bean sprouts, and rice together in seaweed.

I did not expect pot-cooked rice to be this good

Glossy, warm pot-cooked rice

And the thing I especially enjoyed was the sotbap (pot-cooked rice). When I lifted the lid, glossy rice appeared, looking so appetizing all by itself. A little braised-pollock sauce over the rice was such a great match.

The rice was fluffy yet moist, and it included ingredients such as kabocha squash and beans, so it was nutty and satisfying even on its own. Sotbap with beans, black rice, kabocha squash, and ginkgo nuts!! With the siraegi braised-pollock sauce and sotbap together, I felt that this was a combination you absolutely have to order together.

A self-serve bar with plenty of side dishes

Self-serve bar with a variety of side dishes

One thing I liked about Hangsangcharim Kodari Myeongga was the self-serve bar. Once the initial table setting arrived, it was easy to bring back as much extra banchan (Korean side dishes) as we wanted. They say the selection includes seasoned lotus root, seasoned tofu, bean sprouts, cabbage salad, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), white kimchi, and more. There were so many side dishes that went well with the braised pollock that, after trying a little of this and that, I ended up having a truly filling meal.

It felt like a wholesome, restorative meal

The seasoning was not too intense and the spice level was just right, so it was easy to eat comfortably while chatting with my friend. The generous amount of pollock flesh left me satisfied, too.
