Jinju naengmyeon restaurant with Blue Ribbon brass bowls: Song Giwon

In short

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch is a naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant on Modeok-ro 47beon-gil near Yeonam Library in Jinju, Gyeongnam. On a weekday visit at 1pm the writer ordered Nongae 1593 (bibim), Song Giwon 1997 (seokkeum, or mixed), and a side of ujeon (beef pan-fried in egg batter), and found the clean broth of blended seafood and beef stock and the thick beef jeon topping the highlights. Three straight years on the Blue Ribbon Survey (2024, 2025, 2026) made sense from the first bite.

The long, hot summer is winding down, but midday is still sweltering, and lunch always has me craving something cold. If you're in Jinju, Gyeongnam, you can't skip the region's signature dish — Jinju naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). Unlike Pyongyang or Hamhung style naengmyeon, Jinju's version is defined by a deep seafood-based broth topped with a generous helping of beef jeon. This time I visited Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch, widely known as a true local favorite for Jinju naengmyeon. 🍜

Where is Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch?

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch sits on a stretch of 1-2 Modeok-ro 47beon-gil near Yeonam Library. The clean, dark exterior always caught my eye, and even from the entrance there's a sense of polish. Wood-toned doors paired with calm gray brick give it a sleek first impression. 🌿

Blue Ribbon-listed three years running

The first thing that caught my eye at the entrance was the row of Blue Ribbon Survey stickers by the door. 🎀 Listed in 2024, 2025, and now 2026 — three years running — as a top Jinju restaurant, my expectations were already sky-high before I even walked in. There was also a plaque marking it as a sponsor of Jinju National University of Education, adding a warm, community-rooted local feel. I stepped in wondering just how good three straight years of Blue Ribbon-worthy naengmyeon could really be. 🤤

Hours and break time: when is the best time to go?

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch opens at 10:30 and closes at 20:00, with a break time from 16:00 to 17:00. Definitely check the hours before you go so you don't make a wasted trip.

  • OPEN: 10:30
  • CLOSE: 20:00
  • BREAK TIME: 16:00 – 17:00

There may be a wait during lunch peak hours, so I'd recommend visiting right after opening or right around 5pm when break time ends.

Parking and how long you'll wait

There's a decently wide dedicated parking lot right in front of the restaurant. 🚗 It was fairly full during lunch peak, but tables turned over quickly so seats opened up fast.

At the entrance was a Table Ring waitlist kiosk — a must-have for any popular restaurant. I visited around 1pm on a weekday and luckily got in without waiting, though there were clear signs a wave of customers had just passed through. On weekends or during the hot lunch peak, expect a wait, so I'd recommend going right after opening or right after 5pm!

A café-like dining room and the seating

Walking into Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch, my first thought was, 'wait, is this a café?' There was none of the usual crowded, greasy feel of a naengmyeon shop — instead, soft warm lighting and bright wood-toned furniture gave it the cozy sophistication of a stylish café. 🤍

The exposed ceiling and a round pendant light shaped like a full moon added a lovely emotional touch. The ceiling height felt airy, not cramped, and with ceiling fans and air conditioning running smoothly, walking in from the heat brought instant, refreshing relief. 🍃

The large oval table in the center of the hall was especially striking — great for group gatherings, but also comfortable for solo diners.

Mustard, glass bottle of vinegar, and info booklet on the table

Each table had mustard, vinegar, and a little booklet on Song Giwon's history neatly arranged. The vinegar in particular came in an elegant glass bottle rather than the usual plastic one — a small detail that showed real care. 👍

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch also runs a Naver receipt review event. Leave a review and you can choose a drink, canned beer, or an extra serving of beef jeon topping. Don't forget to grab yours!

What we ordered: Nongae 1593, Song Giwon 1997 and ujeon

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon sticks to a traditional method, blending beef and seafood stock in a proprietary ratio for a deep, layered flavor. Even the menu names have their own historical flair, which made for fun reading. We ordered Nongae 1593 (bibim), Song Giwon 1997 (mul-bibim), and a side of ujeon (beef pan-fried jeon). 🥢

Side dishes of geotjeori and radish kimchi

The scissors and tongs they gave us felt like solid stainless steel — heavy and premium. The side dishes were crunchy geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) and mu kimchi (radish kimchi); the geotjeori tasted freshly made, maybe daily.

Ujeon (beef pan-fried in egg batter)

The ujeon came out first. Thin slices of beef coated in egg and freshly pan-fried — an essential side for naengmyeon. Dipped in the tangy sauce, it's soft and savory in every bite, a perfect appetite starter.

Naengmyeon served in a brass bowl

It arrived in a neat, weighty brass bowl. The bowl was piled high with thickly sliced beef jeon topping, crisp pear slices, boiled egg, and sesame seeds.

Nongae 1593 (bibim naengmyeon): a natural, not-too-sweet flavor with spicy-tangy special sauce that paired beautifully with the thick buckwheat noodles. This one had the best pairing with the beef jeon topping, and it went perfectly with the warm broth served alongside.

Song Giwon 1997 (mixed naengmyeon): the perfect choice when you want both the savory depth of chilled seafood-and-beef broth and the sweet-spicy bibim sauce at once. It leans closer to mul naengmyeon (broth noodles) than bibim, so it's clean and refreshing.

The fabric aprons for diners

When I asked for an apron, they brought out a neat, pretty fabric apron instead of a disposable nonwoven one — another small touch of care that won me over. 🥰

Who is Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch best for?

On the way out, true to a real Jinju naengmyeon institution, I noticed a wall packed full of framed autographs from celebrities.

A broth that skillfully blends seafood and beef stock with no fishy taste, deep and clean with umami, topped neatly with thick, savory beef jeon — from the first bite to the last drop, it was easy to see why this place has landed on the Blue Ribbon list three years running and earned its spot as one of Jinju's top restaurants.

The interior is as clean and pleasant as an aesthetic café, making it a great spot to bring parents, host a gathering, or even go on a date. If you want a proper taste of Jinju's local food — cool yet satisfying — at the tail end of this long, hot summer, be sure to stop by Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch!
