Danyang Gugyeong Market dakgangjeong shop: a second box for the road
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop in Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. On a weekend visit, the double black garlic dakgangjeong came with nurungji (crisp rice crust), fried lotus root, potato and black garlic, and took about 45 minutes after the number ticket was handed over; the chicken uses thigh meat only, so it stayed moist with no gamey smell. Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong was good enough that one more box was packed before the drive home.

Let me introduce Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong (단양흑마늘누룽지닭강정), a place I stumbled into while traveling around Danyang's Gugyeong Market — and honestly, my eyes lit up at how good it was. This visit was sponsored, but I liked it so much I ended up packing another box before heading home. Weekend waits here were pretty serious, so let me lay out everything you'd want to know before visiting!
How long is the weekend wait at Danyang Gugyeong Market?
On a weekend, Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong took about 45 minutes from order to pickup. You get a number ticket, and the owner tells you when to come back.

We visited on a weekend, and Danyang Gugyeong Market itself was packed with people. Among all the stalls, this dakgangjeong shop especially had a long line of people waiting. We ordered and waited about 45 minutes before getting our food.

For the wait, once you get a number ticket the owner tells you to come back in a certain number of minutes. There's no phone call system — we walked a lap around the market, came back 45 minutes later, handed over the ticket, and got our chicken right away.
What comes in the double black garlic dakgangjeong box
We ordered the double black garlic flavor dakgangjeong from Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong. What stood out was that it's not just black garlic in the sauce — nurungji (crispy scorched rice), fried lotus root, potato, and black garlic are all mixed in, making for a really hearty portion.

What we ate was the double black garlic dakgangjeong! Since Danyang is famous for garlic, you see a lot of garlic-based food throughout Gugyeong Market. This shop's dakgangjeong doesn't just add black garlic to the sauce — the whole composition is genuinely generous.

Nurungji, fried lotus root, potato, and black garlic are scattered evenly between the pieces of chicken, so it's fun to pick out one at a time.

I personally loved the nurungji pieces the most. Picking out a piece of the nutty, crispy rice crust between bites of crunchy fried chicken changed up the texture so much that I kept reaching for more.

The fried lotus root was thin and crispy too — a nice bonus — and with the potato in there as well, one box of dakgangjeong never felt monotonous. Getting to eat black garlic mixed in throughout really gave it that distinct Danyang flavor.
Thigh meat only: moist inside, crisp coating outside
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong uses only chicken thigh meat, so it's never dry — the meat inside was moist. There was no gamey smell at all, and the crispy coating balanced it out nicely.

The main reason I really enjoyed this place was that the chicken itself was delicious. Since it's all thigh meat, it wasn't dry — the meat inside was moist and tender.

Even with a tasty sauce, dakgangjeong can get old fast if the meat has a gamey smell or the coating is too thick. Here, there was no gamey smell at all, and the coating was crispy while the inside stayed soft — the balance was really good.

The sauce, despite being called black garlic, wasn't overpoweringly garlicky or sharp at all. The sweet, salty dakgangjeong sauce had the distinct flavor of black garlic added naturally, so I never got tired of it. I've tried plenty of famous dakgangjeong at tourist spots, but personally, this was the best tourist-spot dakgangjeong I've ever had.
Black garlic makgeolli with Danyang dakgangjeong
I also tried black garlic makgeolli alongside the black garlic dakgangjeong. Eating the sweet and salty chicken, then taking a sip of makgeolli, felt like it cleared my palate — the pairing was quite good.

I tried the black garlic makgeolli along with the dakgangjeong. Since I was in Danyang, I wanted to properly try something with local character, so I picked this to go with it — and it paired surprisingly well with the chicken.

Eating the sweet and salty black garlic dakgangjeong, then taking a sip of makgeolli, felt like it reset my palate each time — a great combo.

Black garlic dakgangjeong with black garlic makgeolli really made it feel like a proper Danyang trip!
Worth the wait? Why a second box went home with us
The roughly 45-minute weekend wait at Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong was a bit of a downside, but taste-wise, the wait was worth it. I even packed another box before heading home.

The roughly 45-minute weekend wait was definitely a downside, but taste-wise, it wasn't a waste of time at all. What made it especially satisfying was that this wasn't just a one-and-done tourist-spot food — it was good enough that I packed another box before going home.

If you're looking for a good restaurant at Danyang Gugyeong Market or takeout-friendly food during a Danyang trip, give Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong a try. I'd recommend budgeting plenty of wait time if you visit on a weekend — and next time I'm in Danyang, this is a place I'd happily pay for out of my own pocket again!
