Danyang market chicken shop gift packing: dakgangjeong and makgeolli
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. Between the original and the Double Dakgangjeong, the staff said the Double version with twice the black garlic sells far more, so that was the one packed to take away, along with a two-bottle black garlic makgeolli set for 10,000 won as a gift. Even after it cooled the sauce stayed put and the chicken kept its chewy bite, making Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong a solid pick for food you carry home rather than eat on the spot.

If you're at Danyang's Gugyeong Market, this is a spot that's too good to skip — Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong, a place everyone says you have to try. I'd heard it tastes a bit different from the usual fried chicken, and after eating it myself, I understood why so many people come here.
It looked great both as a snack to eat right there in the market and as something to pack up and take home, so I stopped by during my trip.

I'd especially heard it's good even cold, so I picked out one to eat right away and one to gift.
Original or Double Dakgangjeong: which to order in Danyang?
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong has two menu items: Original and Double Dakgangjeong. After going back and forth, I went with the Double Dakgangjeong.

Original

Double Dakgangjeong
I was hesitating over which to pick, but the staff told me the Double Dakgangjeong is overwhelmingly the more popular choice, so I went with that without a second thought. At first I assumed the name meant double the sauce, but it's actually double the black garlic.

Since it's the most popular item, I was curious how it would taste. Once I got the box, the look alone was impressive — each piece was evenly coated in sauce and looked so appetizing that my expectations were up the moment I opened the box.
Does Danyang dakgangjeong still taste good once it cools?
The standout thing about the Double Dakgangjeong is that it's good even after it cools down. I always thought fried chicken had to be eaten hot to taste good, but here it almost seemed better once it cooled.

I actually packed some up and ate it later, and even cold, the sauce hadn't separated at all — it stayed well blended. Most of all, it was different from the crispy, hard texture I usually expect from fried chicken.
How do I put it — there's a chewy bite to it, with the sauce clinging on nicely. From the very first bite, it felt different from the dakgangjeong (Korean sweet-glazed fried chicken) flavor I was used to.

There's a sweetness to it, but it's not overly sweet, and it's the kind of flavor you keep reaching for. I'd expected the black garlic to give it a strong, distinct smell or taste, but it turned out differently than I imagined.
Honestly, it's hard to put this flavor into words. If you go in expecting typical dakgangjeong, it might taste a bit different — so I think you really have to try it yourself to understand.

Black garlic makgeolli: two bottles for 10,000 won
It felt like a waste to just get the dakgangjeong, so I picked up some black garlic makgeolli (Korean rice wine) as well. Since it's made with black garlic, it seemed like it would pair well with the chicken, and at ₩10,000 for a set of two bottles, I got it as a gift too.
The bottle design was clean and simple, making it a nice, easy gift to bring back after a trip. The taste had a subtle black garlic aroma that came through gently, and it paired well with the dakgangjeong.
Why this dakgangjeong is the Danyang Gugyeong Market food to take home
When you're looking for food at Danyang Gugyeong Market during a trip, there's a lot that catches your eye. Among all of it, this black garlic nurungji (scorched rice) dakgangjeong stood out in my memory for tasting different from the usual fried chicken.
I especially liked that it's still good even cold, so you don't have to eat it right away, and it was easy to pack up and take with me. If you're looking for a gift snack like I was, packing both the dakgangjeong and the black garlic makgeolli together seems like a great idea.
Above all, it's the kind of flavor that makes you think 'what is this taste?' while you keep taking another bite — which made it genuinely hard to describe in words. Sweet but not overly so, with that chewy texture added in, it's really a taste you have to try for yourself to fully understand.
If you visit Danyang Gugyeong Market and want something a little different from the usual fried chicken, definitely give this a try. If you're heading to Danyang specifically to buy dakgangjeong, make sure to stop by.
