A birthday lunch course I chose in Seongsan, Jeju

While traveling in Jeju, we decided to have a slightly special meal this time. Since I had come to Jeju with my partner to celebrate my birthday, I wanted an atmospheric course meal rather than our usual quick and simple meal.

So the place we reserved and visited was Nansan-ri Restaurant (난산리 식당) in Seongsan, Jeju. I found it while looking for a course-meal restaurant in Jeju, and after visiting, I was so satisfied not only with the food but also with the restaurant's atmosphere.

A cozy standalone space in a quiet village

Quiet village restaurant in Seongsan, Jeju

Nansan-ri Restaurant in Seongsan, Jeju sits amid the feel of a quiet Jeju village, just as its name suggests. Rather than a flashy, huge restaurant, it felt like a cozy, atmospheric place for a special meal in Jeju.

Nansan-ri Restaurant entrance garden

The restaurant occupies an entire standalone house, and the garden by the entrance is decorated with wine bottles and a full-length mirror for photos. We took a photo here before going in.

Once inside, the open kitchen and wine bottles tightly arranged in the display case caught my eye first. The tables and the space itself were neatly kept, and its calm mood suited a date or anniversary meal beautifully.

Since we were there for my birthday, I especially loved that atmosphere. When I gave them the reservation name, they showed us to our table, where a welcome letter with my name on it was waiting. I was touched by the thoughtfulness.

They also sell wine and other drinks. They can recommend wines to pair with the course, so I recommend asking a staff member when ordering.

We came assuming we could not drink because we had to drive, but they recommended non-alcoholic wine, and it was so delicious with the food. Personally, the rosé non-alcoholic wine was far tastier than I expected and really stayed with me.

Rosé non-alcoholic wine

For reference, Nansan-ri Restaurant notes that call taxis and designated-driver services are available in the area, which may be useful for anyone wanting to enjoy wine with the course. Another thing I loved was that they explained each dish as it arrived. Rather than simply setting down the food and leaving, they told us what it was and what ingredients it contained, so I think even people new to course meals could enjoy it.

  • Non-alcoholic wine × 2 (red/rosé)

The lunch course, served in order

Bread before the meal

Baguette with bracken butter

The first bread course was baguette served with bracken butter. Bracken butter sounded a little unfamiliar, so I was curious, but spread over the bread, its distinct aroma came through gently and went wonderfully with the warm baked baguette.

Egg

Medium-cooked egg and tomato dish

The next dish was an egg course. Scooping up the soft medium-cooked egg with the sauce gave a rich flavor, while the fresh tomato underneath made it even more delicious than I expected. Eating it with the caviar on top also made me feel like I was having such an elegant egg dish, all on one plate.

Salad

Romaine Caesar salad
Salad with bacon and Parmesan

The salad was romaine topped with Caesar dressing, bacon, and Parmesan. The crisp romaine, salty bacon, and Parmesan made it familiar but delicious. Having a salad like this midway through the course also felt like it refreshed the flavors of the dishes we had eaten before.

Jeju black pork tenderloin and rosemary roasted potatoes

Then the Jeju black pork tenderloin I had been looking forward to arrived. The menu listed Jeju black pork tenderloin with myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) cream sauce, and it felt different to encounter Jeju's commonly enjoyed black pork in this course-meal style.

The tenderloin was cooked tenderly, and it tasted different on its own from when it was paired with the myeoljeot cream sauce. Served as a plated dish like this, it definitely had an atmosphere.

Rosemary roasted potatoes, the kind served with steak, came alongside it too. The potatoes themselves were seasoned, making them perfect with the tenderloin steak. The shishito peppers were not spicy, and their crisp texture made the main course even more enjoyable.

Pasta and house-made pickles

Chorizo oil spaghetti

The menu called it chorizo oil spaghetti, and the noodles had absorbed the flavors of the oil and chorizo well, letting us finish with a taste quite different from the earlier courses.

Personally, I feel disappointed when pasta portions are too small in a course like this, but at Nansan-ri Restaurant, the dishes had been building up from the start, so by the end I was much fuller than expected.

Dessert

Panna cotta dessert

The meal ended with panna cotta for dessert. The pretty round white panna cotta arrived with sauce, and after all the dishes beforehand, the soft, sweet dessert suited the ending perfectly.
