Gimhae beef short rib restaurant open till 11pm: Wondaepo Sogalbisal
In short
Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a charcoal-grilled beef short rib restaurant in Oe-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongnam. Arriving around 9pm, I ordered one plate of marinated beef short rib (500g, 32,000 won) with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew); the marinade was mild enough to let the beef flavour come through, and the stew was good enough to finish two bowls of rice. With prices rising everywhere, Wondaepo Sogalbisal is worth a return trip for the value on beef.

Today I visited Wondaepo Sogalbisal (원대포소갈비살), a Gimhae restaurant known for great taste and value. It's located in Oe-dong.
Where is Wondaepo Sogalbisal, and what are its hours?
Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a beef short rib restaurant located at 1F, 8-1 Pyeongjeon-ro, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do (Oe-dong 703-9), South Korea. Hours are 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, closed every Sunday. I parked in front of the restaurant.

Wondaepo Sogalbisal has become word-of-mouth famous for its great value. It's not just cheap — it's genuinely delicious too. The place has that old-school, nostalgic vibe that gives it real character~
Can you still get a table at 9pm?
I think I arrived around 9pm — pretty late. The owner said late hours don't usually have meat left, but I got lucky and they still had some :) That's how popular this place is.

Wondaepo Sogalbisal menu and prices
Here's the menu and pricing at Wondaepo Sogalbisal. Marinated or plain beef short rib, one plate: ₩32,000. Isn't that cheaper than pork belly? I was honestly shocked at the price. Plus it's 500g, plenty for two people to share. There was also hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe (raw beef) as an à la carte item. The meal menu is also very affordable, and there's no table setting fee.

There was a self-serve bar off to the side where you could take as much as you wanted. It was nice that the self-serve bar was kept clean and well-managed.

Side dishes and the chicory salad at Wondaepo Sogalbisal
This is how the basic table setting comes out. That chicory salad really suited my taste. The slightly bitter chicory with a delicious dressing was a nice refresher between bites.

Grilling one 500g plate of marinated beef short rib over charcoal
At Wondaepo Sogalbisal, this is hwangje galbisal — a rare cut where only about 1kg comes from a whole cow. The special house marinade is made with freshly blended fruit. I usually prefer the plain version, but today I ordered a full plate of the marinated one. How the owner keeps this price is beyond me — really impressive.

The charcoal came out with great heat. Meat grilled over charcoal that good can't possibly taste bad, haha.

The plate I ordered came out, and wow — it looked great and the portion was generous. I usually prefer plain meat, but this didn't feel over-marinated, more like the marinade had just been freshly applied, which I loved even more.
Since it's marinated, it burns fast, so keep flipping it, haha.

A delicious smell kept drifting up as it cooked. The meat quality looked great too, and the price just didn't add up?? Haha.

They didn't even put the whole plate on the grill at once — they held some back, and there was still a lot left. I was really looking forward to the special fruit-based marinade.

How did the marinade taste?
It was delicious with the chicory salad, and good with sliced onion too. The marinade wasn't harsh — nice and subtle. It felt like the marinade didn't cover up the beef flavor at all. Wrapped in fresh lettuce, it filled my mouth completely — I basically inhaled it without breathing, haha. It had been a while since I had such delicious beef short rib! Being marinated but tasting almost like plain meat made it even more satisfying.

The must-order doenjang jjigae and doenjang sulbap (stew with rice)
At Wondaepo Sogalbisal, you absolutely have to try the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). I didn't know this was my first time here, but one bite in — wow, this is definitely a stew you have to turn into doenjang sulbap (soybean stew mixed with rice, eaten with drinks). Looking around, every other table was doing the same, all having it as a side to their drinks, haha.

Kimchi comes out too when you order a meal.

The portion of doenjang was generous, plenty for two bowls of rice with just one stew. The ingredients were finely chopped rather than large, and there was a lot of onion, which gave it a nice subtle sweetness.

Wow, this was the best doenjang jjigae I've had recently. My meat-loving partner had most of the beef short rib, while I, who hadn't had much appetite lately, ended up eating almost two bowls of the doenjang sulbap myself, haha. To think a place this good and this reasonable still exists in an era of high prices. Wondaepo Sogalbisal is such great value — I'll definitely be back for date nights!
