As you walk along the market passageways, the sweet, nutty scent of jocheong (rice syrup) gently drifts through the air. The large yellow-toned sign is easy to spot, so I could find it right away even in the busy alleys.

The shop had freshly made snacks from the day, neatly arranged by type. It is a small space, but the preparation counter and packing area at the back were impressively clean and organized. I also liked that individual tasting toothpicks and sample boxes were set out hygienically at one side of the display, making it easy for customers to try things without pressure.

Handmade oranda and gwajul gangjeong lineup

The display counter was systematically stocked with traditional Korean snack combinations. Rather than selling only one or two items, the choices were finely divided by grain type, syrup blend, and added ingredients.

The first item that caught my eye was the signature handmade oranda, a puffed-rice confection. There was plain oranda with a soft rather than hard bite; tangerine oranda generously tossed in bright Jeju tangerine jocheong; and nut oranda loaded with walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds. The jocheong was tightly woven between the oranda pieces, yet the surface was not soggy and had a clear sheen.

Another of the shop's main items was traditional gwajul gangjeong: fried gwajul (a traditional Korean pastry snack) coated evenly with puffed rice and tangerine jocheong. It came in two versions—the regular plain rice-syrup one and a tangerine rice-syrup version with a local Jeju flavor—so it was easy to choose to taste.

What is the gift packaging like?

The packaging was also available in several formats, from small zippered pouches that are easy to open and snack on right away to rigid handled gift boxes that work well for long trips or giving to people around you. The box packaging had well-separated inner dividers, a thoughtful detail that helps keep the contents from breaking.

Gwajul gangjeong is my favorite among traditional Korean sweets, so I chose the gift set again without hesitation. It is something I never skip buying whenever I come down to Jeju, and this time the puffed rice on the outside was crisp while the layers of gwajul inside broke apart lightly, without any oily smell. The gentle tangerine aroma kept it fresh and never cloying to the last bite, haha.

This is my absolute favorite snack: a clean texture that does not stick to your teeth and the refined sweetness of premium rice syrup in perfect harmony. ♡

Where should you park for Dongmun Market?

Because it is in the central alleys of a traditional market, it is not possible to stop a car directly in front of the shop. If you are driving, Dongmun Public Parking Building, about a three-minute walk away, or Namsugak Public Parking Lot toward the stream are both very convenient. As public lots, they offer the first 30 minutes free for turnaround, and the basic rate is also relatively affordable at about ₩500 per 15 minutes. Lines to enter can get long during weekend afternoons or when the night market opens, so I recommend coming in the morning, hehe.
