Looking for proper charcoal-grilled beef ribs in Samseong-dong even at lunchtime? This time I visited Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, a place I'd always been curious about since it's packed with customers every time I pass by. Based on over 30 years of food service research, it's a charcoal rib restaurant that reinterprets the old-school garden-style restaurant in a modern way. Here's my review of a proper Samseong-dong meat restaurant meal — from beef ribs to hot-stone rice to naengmyeon.

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch sits right in front of Samseong Jungang Station Exit 3. I'd passed by several times and noticed it was always packed, lunch or dinner, so I'd been wanting to try it.

What is the lunchtime event at Gukbo Garden?
Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch also runs a lunchtime event. It lowers the price barrier so you can enjoy ribs and a full meal for less, which seems great for office workers in the area.

Inside Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch and its 11 private rooms
Inside, the space was spacious and neatly decorated overall. With 11 separate private rooms available, it also looks like a good spot for company dinners or business meetings.

Corkage free at Gukbo Garden, all day every day
Something worth noting for anyone who likes to drink — Gukbo Garden always operates free corkage. Being able to bring your own wine or liquor to enjoy with charcoal ribs seems like a real plus when picking a Samseong-dong meat restaurant.

What comes in the 20,000-won lunch set?
At lunch, there's a menu where you can get ribs and a meal together for around ₩20,000s. You can choose between naengmyeon or hot-stone rice, which makes for a solid combination when you want a hearty meal.

Beef tartare from the review event
There was also a review event running where you get a small size of beef tartare. If you want to pair tartare with your ribs, check when you visit.

How generous are the banchan side dishes?
Even before the meat arrived, the basic side dishes were quite generous. There was radish salad, scallion salad, seasoned vegetables, japchae, salad, and kimchi — a nice variety, and fun to try one by one.

Two servings of soy-marinated beef short ribs over charcoal
We ordered two servings of soy-marinated beef ribs. The marinade was soaked in nicely, so it looked appetizing even before hitting the charcoal.

They said the meat is grilled over twice-fired charcoal. Once the ribs went on the charcoal, it really felt like proper charcoal rib eating.

Tableside grilling service, even at lunch
Even at lunchtime, we got tableside grilling service where staff cook the meat for you. It was convenient not having to worry about grilling and just eating side dishes and the meal while waiting.

Marinated ribs can burn easily, so grilling them yourself is trickier than it seems — having staff do it was great. They cut it into bite-sized pieces, so you can eat the fully cooked pieces right away.

The perfectly cooked beef ribs had a glossy sheen on the surface, looking appetizing just from the sight. The sweet marinade blended with the charcoal aroma in a way that naturally made you think of rice.

Choosing the meal: sweet potato and ginkgo hot-stone rice with blue crab doenjang stew
I chose the hot-stone rice for my meal. It doesn't just come with the rice alone — doenjang (soybean paste) stew comes with it too, making for a filling pairing with the ribs.

The hot-stone rice wasn't plain white rice either. It came with sweet potato and ginkgo nuts mixed in, so the rice itself was fun to eat.

The doenjang stew had blue crab in it too, so the broth was rich and savory. With just the basic side dishes, warm hot-stone rice, and doenjang stew, it felt like you could have a proper meal on its own.
Beef short ribs with hot-stone rice
I dipped the well-grilled ribs in garlic sauce and laid them over the warm rice. Rice is essential with beef ribs, of course — this was my favorite combination of the day.

Cold water naengmyeon alongside the ribs
My companion ordered the water naengmyeon (cold noodle soup). The combination of cool naengmyeon with a warm piece of rib on top is also essential — you can just choose your meal based on preference.

Finishing with sungnyung (toasted rice tea), the rib bones and yogurt ice cream
After scooping out the hot-stone rice, we poured water in to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea). Being able to finish on a warm note after all the meat is why I was more satisfied with the hot-stone rice choice than the naengmyeon.

At the end, we picked off the meat still left on the rib bones. After eating beef ribs, hot-stone rice, and stew, it really felt like a lavish lunch.

After the meal, you can have yogurt ice cream, similar to the Yeogieottaejeong style, for dessert. The chocolate topping wasn't a cheap-tasting chocolate flavor either — it paired well with the ice cream, so I kept enjoying it even while full.

At Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, I got to enjoy everything at once — charcoal-grilled beef ribs, a generous table setting, hot-stone rice, and dessert. It's a good reference point whether you're looking for a lunch spot, a meeting place with private rooms, or a Samseong-dong meat restaurant with free corkage.
