Private room Korean BBQ near Coex Mall in Seoul: Gukbo Garden

In short

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch is a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant on Samseong-ro in Gangnam, Seoul, near Samseong Jungang Station and Bongeunsa Temple, with second-floor private rooms for 2 to 16 people and a corkage-free event. Meeting a friend who commutes to Coex for dinner, the writer ordered two servings of Handon bakpo marinated pork ribs (Korean pork), one serving of Gukbo Seolhwa marinated ribs, bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and beef tartare given as a Naver review perk. From the side dishes to the rib marinade, Gukbo Garden keeps the flavour mellow and aged rather than heavy, making it a solid pick for a company dinner or a special occasion.

Table spread of charcoal-grilled marinated ribs at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch

I set up a long-overdue dinner with a friend who commutes near Coex, and while looking for good Coex restaurants I ended up finding Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch through a great opportunity. The place had only just opened so it was spotlessly clean, and true to its title as a charcoal rib specialist it handles both Hanwoo (Korean beef) and Hanwoo-grade pork — I was curious, and since it had parking and corkage-free too, I thought this was the place and booked right away!

Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch basics: corkage-free and a room for 16

They're running a corkage-free event, so it's great for pairing drinks with the meat, and there are rooms that fit up to 16 people — perfect for anyone looking for a Coex company-dinner spot. If you book for a birthday or wedding invitation gathering, they'll also prepare seaweed soup or champagne, so keep that in mind. That day there was actually a birthday reservation, and they'd set up a birthday garland!

Getting there from Samseong Jungang Station: exterior, parking and interior

The exterior is clean and upscale, and the parking lot is spacious enough for about 8 cars, with valet available too, so it's convenient if you bring a car. Restaurants with parking near Bongeunsa Temple aren't common, so this was a nice find!

Interior of the first-floor hall at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch

The first floor is the main hall. It has the vibe of an upscale hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) restaurant, and since it had only just opened, everything was spotless. The staff were friendly too, which made a great first impression.

They also stock premium liquor. I was happy to spot a bottle of Hibiki, which I really treasure, and there were baby chairs too, so families can come eat together — looks like a great spot to bring a baby near Coex!

The second floor is all rooms, and it was completely full! Only one room was open so I barely managed to snap a photo, but with rooms fitting anywhere from 2 to 16 people, it looks like a great spot to book for blind dates, business meetings, or group dinners near Coex, depending on the occasion!

Gukbo Garden menu and what we ordered for dinner

This place is known for using premium YBD-grade Korean pork, said to be the top 0.3% of domestic pork, and No.9 Hanwoo beef, which ranks even above the 1++ grade. At lunch there are separate lunch specials like charcoal-grilled set meals, and at dinner you can order à la carte. We ordered the following.

  • Hanwoo-grade pork rib skewers (bakpo yangnyeom galbi) x2 servings
  • Gukbo Seolhwa marinated ribs x1 serving
  • Bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles)
  • Beef tartare (yukhoe) — Naver review service

The side dishes came out one after another! A variety of accompanying banchan, salad, and even seasoned marinated crab!

None of the side dishes tasted heavily seasoned — they were closer to a well-aged umami flavor.

The seasoning wasn't lacking, but it had a subtle flavor that I really loved! It felt like eating side dishes from a high-end hanjeongsik restaurant.

Handon bakpo marinated pork ribs, two servings

We grilled the pork rib skewers first — the rib meat is sliced into thin sheets and scored, so the marinade soaks all the way through, giving it great flavor. The staff grilled it for us directly, so we didn't have to worry about burning it and could just enjoy eating, which was convenient too.

It's delicious even plain without any side dishes, but pairing it with shredded scallions, wasabi, or garlic soy sauce gave it a different feel each time, which made it fun.

Adding one serving of Gukbo Seolhwa marinated ribs

Plate of Gukbo Seolhwa marinated ribs, one serving

I was curious about the Seolhwa marinated ribs, which was marked as the BEST menu item, so I ordered it too. They said it's from the pork neck area — it had less fat and softer lean meat than the marinated ribs I usually get elsewhere, which suited my taste better.

I noticed lettuce wrap vegetables among the kiosk's extra options — and they were free, so I ordered them right away!

We wrapped the meat in lettuce, and among everything we ate that day, the Seolhwa marinated ribs were the number one dish!

Bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles)

The bibim naengmyeon paired well with the ribs, and it wasn't harsh at all — it had a subtle, mellow umami flavor!

Beef tartare from the Naver review perk

The beef tartare wasn't heavily seasoned either, so you could really taste the fresh flavor of the Hanwoo beef itself. We ate very well and got full.

Dessert: coffee, omija tea and yogurt ice cream

Yogurt ice cream served for dessert

For dessert, there was coffee, omija (schisandra berry) tea, and yogurt ice cream! It tasted exactly like the yogurt ice cream chain Yoajeong! It was the perfect palate cleanser. Make sure to have the ice cream dessert before you leave!

Is Gukbo Garden worth it for a company dinner near Coex?

A lot of charcoal rib restaurants have heavily seasoned side dishes, but at Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch, everything from the banchan to the rib marinade had an aged, mellow umami flavor that made it easy to eat without feeling overwhelmed. I think that's exactly why the fresh flavor of the pork came through so clearly. Nothing here hides the meat's natural smell behind heavy seasoning or side dishes — and that feels like real confidence! If you're looking for a place near Coex or Samseong Jungang Station for a company dinner or a meal for a special occasion, I recommend Gukbo Garden Samsung Main Branch.
