Gwangju Chinese restaurant with high chairs and yusanseul-bap: Mayway

I heard there was a new jjamppong spot in Cheomdan, Gwangju, so I had to check out Mayway.

Mayway is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00 and last order at 21:30. It's located at 6 Cheomdan River-ro 87beon-gil, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Korea, right across from Cheomdan Mustard Seed Church.

Where to park near Mayway

✅️ Mayway parking info: there's no dedicated lot, so you can park on the nearby street or use the temporary public lot about a 2–3 minute walk away (between Hyangchon Duck and Swimming Child Cheomdan branch).

Mayway carries on the legacy of Daeheung Restaurant, which was known for its old-school style on Chungjang-ro 5-ga since 1950. They mix and simmer every sauce and base in-house rather than relying on artificial additives, so the flavor comes from the natural wok-fired aroma and fresh ingredients.

Arriving at 11:30 on a weekend: is there a wait?

Since the restaurant only opened in July, the interior was spotless.

We arrived at 11:30 on a weekend with no wait, but by the time we finished eating, every table was full. To wait at Mayway, you register at the waiting machine at the entrance and wait; there are waiting chairs set up out front.

To order at Mayway, you just scan the QR code attached to the table.

What we ordered at Mayway, and what it cost

Mayway really has such a wide menu.

Out of everything, we ordered brisket jjamppong (large) ₩15,900, tangsuyuk (half order) ₩18,900, and yusanseul-bap ₩14,900.

1. Brisket jjamppong, large, 15,900 won

The noodles were nice and chewy, there was plenty of meat, and the meat had no unpleasant smell at all — the jjamppong broth was really delicious.

I'm already craving this brisket jjamppong again (a real jjamppong spot in Cheomdan, Gwangju!)

2. Tangsuyuk, half order, 18,900 won

The tangsuyuk at Mayway wasn't in the usual long strips we're used to — it came in plump, chunky pieces instead.

Since this was the dish we'd be sharing with our child, I was worried the thick meat might be dry and chewy, but it wasn't tough at all — it was delicious. I later found out they use fresh, never-frozen domestic sirloin, fried to be crispy outside and juicy inside.

3. Yusanseul-bap, 14,900 won

I ordered yusanseul-bap because I wanted something mild. It came generously topped with mushrooms, shrimp, and vegetables, and the sauce was light and tasty.

The self-serve corner: pa-kimchi and free rice

It was great that there was a self-serve corner with free side dishes and rice.

The pa-kimchi at the self-serve corner was really good (I normally don't eat pa-kimchi, but it was delicious on top of the yusanseul-bap, and I think it would be even better with jjajangmyeon).

Is Mayway good for a meal with a toddler?

They have baby dishware and baby chairs, so it's a good spot to visit as a family.

Our little one happily ate tangsuyuk and rice today too ♡ (At first I worried the thick meat might be too dry and she'd spit it out, but that turned out to be needless worry.)

And to finish, ice cream for dessert!

Mayway is currently running an event where ordering 2 cold draft beers gets you tangsuyuk for ₩1,000 (a bit tempting, but since we still had plans with our kid that weekend, we passed).

What to order at Mayway next time

Mayway has such a varied menu — hot stone jjajang, spicy jjamppong stew, and more — that there were plenty of dishes I still wanted to try. Especially the hot stone jjajang! Watching the tables around us order it, I think I have to try it on my next visit.

This visit to Mayway confirmed it's not just a great jjamppong spot in Cheomdan — everything we ordered was delicious, and it's a restaurant I'd love to visit again.
