Gopchang hot pot in Yongbong-dong with my parents
My parents and I had been craving gopchang hot pot (beef offal hot pot) for the first time in a while, so we went to Kim Taeju Seonsan Gopchang, Yongbong Branch (김태주선산곱창 용봉점) in Yongbong-dong. If you love gopchang, you know those days when you really, truly want it! That day, more than an ordinary meal, I was craving a spicy, piping-hot broth full of gopchang. So I visited with my parents, and the portion was more generous than expected—we had a delicious meal.
The restaurant atmosphere and our order
Exterior
When we arrived, it had an easygoing atmosphere that made it inviting to walk in for a meal. The sign was noticeable, so it was not difficult to find, and the place felt approachable overall. These days, I prefer restaurants like this, where you can focus on the food in a comfortable setting, over places that are decorated too extravagantly. A dish like gopchang hot pot would be great for a generous family meal, and it also seems like a nice match for drinks with friends.
Interior

Inside, the atmosphere was comfortable for dining. As we sat down and looked over the menu, I wanted to order right away. While chatting with my parents as we waited, the complimentary side dishes began arriving one by one.

After looking at the menu, we ordered 3 servings of gopchang hot pot. It was ₩11,000 per serving, and I heard the Korean gopchang hot pot is made with beef-bone broth. Such a great value, seriously.

A complimentary spread that feels generous for the price
There was something I liked more than expected from this point on: the complimentary table spread. It was genuinely generous for the price. While waiting for our order, I tried the side dishes one by one, and considering the cost, I was happy with how well the table was set. First came cold soybean-sprout soup, which was refreshing and clean—perfect for a spoonful before the hot pot. There was also an egg-and-ham pancake. This is the kind of dish everyone would probably like, right? I picked up one while it was warm, and it was mild and tasty, making it easy to snack on before the gopchang hot pot arrived. Stir-fried anchovies and pickled chili peppers also came as standard. With so many kinds of banchan (Korean side dishes), it felt like even one hot pot order came with plenty of sides to eat with rice.

We also got boiled dumplings, and dipping them in soy sauce made them a nice little treat. With just a light dip in soy sauce, they had the kind of easygoing flavor that made me keep reaching for more. From the cold soybean-sprout soup and egg-and-ham pancake to the stir-fried anchovies, pickled peppers, and boiled dumplings, everything was included, and I personally thought the spread was excellent for the price.

There was one more complimentary side that I especially liked: fresh kimchi. It was delicious even on its own. True to its name, it was served fresh rather than as fully fermented kimchi, so at first I tried it simply as a side dish. But it was tastier than I expected.

A spicy hot pot generously filled with gopchang
When the hot pot arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was, of course, the gopchang. There was more in it than I expected, so I liked the portion right away. More than anything, the Korean gopchang looked fresh even at a glance. Sometimes you go out for gopchang hot pot and find lots of broth but hardly any gopchang, but this one was generous enough that picking out pieces one by one was part of the fun. Gopchang hot pot really tastes best when it has plenty of ingredients like this. As it bubbled away and reduced at the table, the aroma of the broth grew more and more appetizing, and I could not wait to eat.

Adding fresh kimchi to the hot pot
What stayed with me most that day was adding fresh kimchi to the gopchang hot pot. At first, I ate it as a side dish, but once we added it to the pot and let it cook, it had a completely different flavor. The refreshing taste of the fresh kimchi seeped into the rich broth, making the soup really delicious. A piece of gopchang with kimchi, followed by a spoonful of broth, had me constantly reaching back in. Fresh kimchi is good on its own, but I really recommend putting it into the hot pot too. Above all, the broth was excellent, and the gopchang and kimchi went so well together.

The gopchang was neither overly soft nor tough enough to require endless chewing. It was chewy, with that characteristic rich, nutty flavor, so I kept reaching for it with my chopsticks. Gopchang is best when its distinctive savory richness comes through when you chew it, and that day it was fun to pick out each piece. The broth was spicy and went well with the gopchang, and it was great with rice too.

My parents said it was so delicious that I felt proud for no reason, haha. My mother praised it so highly that she called it a perfect drinking snack restaurant—and promptly ordered soju! Personally, I enjoyed it even more because the kimchi balanced the gopchang's distinctive richness. My parents also said the fresh kimchi tasted great in the hot pot, so all three of us kept adding it. If I visit again, I will definitely put fresh kimchi in the hot pot.

Two servings of fried rice with the remaining sauce
After we had eaten a good amount of the gopchang hot pot, we could not skip fried rice. It feels like something is missing if you eat hot pot without fried rice afterward, right? So we added 2 servings. Stir-frying it directly in the remaining sauce after eating the hot pot made it another special treat.

The flavor of the gopchang hot pot we had eaten earlier had soaked right into the rice, so it tasted delicious in a totally different way with the first bite. We were already full after plenty of hot pot, but it was amazing how the fried rice still went down. I think finishing with fried rice is what makes a meal feel complete.
A hearty meal out with my parents
It had been a while since I had gone out to eat with my parents, and our gopchang hot pot meal was satisfying overall. Above all, the hot pot was generous enough that it did not feel insufficient for three people, and I loved that it contained plenty of gopchang. The gopchang was chewy and savory, and the spicy broth made it a great match for rice.
The refreshing flavor of the fresh kimchi seeped into the hot pot, pairing well with the gopchang and making the broth something I kept wanting to eat. Adding 2 servings of fried rice at the end made it truly filling.
If you are looking for a good gopchang restaurant or gopchang hot pot restaurant in Yongbong-dong, I would recommend stopping by. People who like gopchang will probably enjoy its chewy texture, and the portions are generous enough for a group meal. Like us, if you order 3 servings of gopchang hot pot and 2 servings of fried rice, you can enjoy a hearty meal from the hot pot through to the fried rice.
It was such a nice day: I ate delicious food with my parents for the first time in a while, talked a lot, and left feeling full. The next time I crave gopchang hot pot, I think I will come back. If you are in Yongbong-dong on a day when you want chewy, savory gopchang in a spicy broth—or when you want a generous gopchang hot pot with a variety of side dishes—give it a try. Next time, I will probably add plenty of fresh kimchi to the pot again and finish with fried rice.
