Iksan tonkatsu with a free self-bar and toast: Wonkwang Katsu

In short

Wonkwang Katsu is an aged pork cutlet (tonkatsu) restaurant on the university street by Wonkwang University in Iksan, Jeonbuk. On a weekday visit at 7pm the order was cheese katsu and aged pork loin katsu, and because one menu item per person unlocks the self-bar, a bowl of rice and an Americano, the meal also included toast made at the self-bar. The portions felt about two pieces larger than at other cutlet shops, so Wonkwang Katsu is a satisfying choice for a filling meal in Iksan.

I agonized a bit over what to order, but ended up eating really well :)

Weekday evening wait and the room at Wonkwang Katsu

I visited around 7pm on a weekday, and even though it's a famous Iksan cutlet restaurant, there was no wait. For reference, the place was actually full when I ate — I just took the photo for the blog after everyone had cleared out, haha.

The space felt clean overall, haha. Most tables seat four, but there are also 2-person seats, so it didn't feel awkward to eat alone — a nice spot if you're looking for somewhere to have lunch solo in Iksan.

The self-bar and toast: what one menu item per person includes

Wonkwang Katsu's self-bar even has a spot where you can make your own toast! It was great being able to enjoy a bit of toast after the cutlet, haha.

The mark cream gyeongyang katsu seems to be the signature dish, but we ordered the cheese katsu and the aged pork loin katsu.

After the meal, there's also a prize draw event 🎁 It's fun to try once, so it seems like a nice spot to bring kids too, haha.

How big and how good are the cheese katsu and aged pork loin katsu?

The portions at Wonkwang Katsu felt a little bigger than at other cutlet places. For the good price, it felt like they gave about two more pieces than other shops, haha. The mountain of cabbage salad was great to eat before the meal too, and I left satisfied after a hearty meal on the Wonkwang University road in Iksan.

There are several sauces for the cutlet — cutlet sauce, wasabi, and salt — so you can dip according to your taste. Dipping in salt lets you taste the clean, savory flavor of the meat itself even more.

The kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi) side dish was also sweet and crunchy — really good!

The cutlet was cooked just right, so I could really taste the texture and savory flavor unique to pork loin — I enjoyed it a lot at Wonkwang Katsu.

I got to enjoy a filling meal of great cutlet plus toast, and at the end even picked up a small gift from the prize draw event — made it even more fun! 🎁 If you're looking for good pork cutlet in Iksan, I recommend Wonkwang Katsu near Wonkwang University :)
