Bossam set for two at a Jeonju Korean pub: Hwanyeong, Jeonbuk-dae

In short

Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch is a Korean-style pub on Myeongnyun 5-gil in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, near Jeonbuk National University. Two diners ordered the bossam set (33,000 won) and a Hwanyeong highball (7,000 won), which brought bossam (boiled pork wraps), half-and-half jeon (savory pancakes), bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and a complimentary steamed egg, at a partitioned table away from the noisy student groups. Hwanyeong is a generous, good-value spread that suits both big parties and a table for two.

Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch: a Jeonju Korean pub that welcomes groups

Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch is a Korean-style pub on Myeongnyun 5-gil in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, and this time we came as a pair for the bossam (boiled pork wraps) set with a highball. I've seen Hwanyeong all over Gaekri-dan-gil before, but this was my first time at the Jeonbuk-daehak location!! September means a lot of group get-togethers, and sure enough there was a big student group at Hwanyeong too. Feels like they welcome groups here haha. So let's take a look at this group-friendly Hwanyeong near Jeonbuk National University.

Where to park near Hwanyeong

For Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch, you can park at the Jeonbuk National University lot or the Jeonju KCC parking lot. Near the university, those two lots are basically the unwritten rule!

Inside Hwanyeong: interior and seating

Hwanyeong

Welcome to Hwanyeong~ hehe, the red is really striking. It gives off a bit of a Chinese vibe, but it's a Korean pub!!

Exterior of Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch with wide open windows
Exterior

The windows are wide open, so on a cool day like this it almost feels like outdoor seating, which was nice. But of course the window seats — always the prime spot — were already taken by other guests ㅠㅠ

Interior of Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch with a group of college students

Inside there was a big group of college students. Not super close friends it seemed... a bit awkward but loud and lively at the same time... this is exactly what being a college student is like!! Ah, youth~~

Table seating separated by a partition at Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch

The two of us quietly settled into a spot next to a partition lol. It separated us nicely from the group, which was great. The window was open too so voices didn't echo — really pleasant.

Hwanyeong's menu and what two people ordered

True to a Korean pub, the menu is all Korean dishes. We debated galbi-jjim (braised short ribs) but ended up picking the set so we could try a bit of everything lol.

Seaweed soup and corn came out as complimentary sides, and they were nutty and delicious.

Bossam set, 33,000 won: how much food two people get

Ready to eat
Table setting with bossam, jeon, and bibim guksu

A hearty spread came together~~ and this is all one set for 33,000 won — great value for a filling table, especially for college students. This might actually break the table!! Pajeon, bossam, bibim guksu, all in one!!! The steamed egg was a free extra hahaha. I think our food took a bit longer because of the big student group, so maybe that's why they gave it to us?

Hwanyeong bossam served with julienned radish salad
Bossam

The bossam was tender and paired perfectly with the julienned radish salad. The radish strips looked almost as thin as thread.

Chives and cabbage served alongside bossam
Chives

With chives and cabbage on the side too, it felt like being at a dedicated bossam restaurant!! Meat is always right!!!!!

Half-and-half jeon: kimchi jeon and chive jeon

Half-and-half serving of kimchi jeon and chive jeon
Jeon

Half-and-half is the way to go for jeon (savory pancakes)~~ can't choose between the two ㅠㅠ Perfect food now that it's getting cooler out.

The tangy, salty flavor of the kimchi was really nice. Rather than being intense, it leaned more mellow and nutty! Jeon always seems especially hard to make well at home ㅠㅠ The batter is such a pain,,,

The chive jeon had a subtle, fragrant chive flavor coming through gently.

Chive jeon cooked crispy on the outside
Chive jeon

Crispy on the outside, moist inside, great texture, and the chives seemed to turn slightly sweet as they cooked? It wasn't too spicy or heavily seasoned, so it actually paired quite well with the strongly seasoned bibim guksu.

Hwanyeong highball, 7,000 won

A glass of Hwanyeong highball topped with lemon
Highball

Came to a pub, gotta have a drink~ went with the basic highball and could definitely taste the fresh lemon! With the added carbonation, it was clean and refreshing overall. The strong alcohol taste typical of highballs wasn't too heavy, so it wasn't overwhelming~ the bright lemon flavor made it easy to pair with food.

Bibim guksu, the set's spicy mixed noodles

Spicy bibim guksu included in the set
Bibim guksu

The bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) had a sweet-and-tangy sauce with a spicy kick that really woke up the appetite.

Eating it together with the chive jeon was great — the combo of spicy noodles and crispy pancake made everything taste even better haha. Turns out there was a reason it's part of the set!

The complimentary steamed egg

The complimentary steamed egg~~ it seemed lightly seasoned already. Wonderfully fluffy, soft, and warm lol. Eating it while still hot really brought out that classic steamed-egg texture — fluffy yet moist, which I loved.

Is Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch worth it?

The end

A truly stuffing full-course spread... I'd say if you're looking for a Korean pub, Hwanyeong is the place to go. That wraps up this look at Hwanyeong near Jeonbuk National University, a Jeonju spot that welcomes groups~
