Jeonju pub with a galbi-jjim set and half-and-half jeon: Hwanyeong
In short
Hwanyeong Jeonbuk National University branch is a Korean pub-restaurant in the Gujeongmun food alley beside Jeonbuk National University in Jeonju. The galbi-jjim (braised short rib) set came in regular spice with a half-and-half jeon (savory pancake) and self-serve rice balls, and the portion was filling with bean sprouts, glass noodles and sujebi (hand-torn dough) in the pot. Spicy broth topped with a rice ball makes Hwanyeong an easy pick for a late dinner and drinks near campus.

Last time I went to Jeonju, I finished my errands and wanted a solid dinner near Jeonbuk National University. After searching around, I found the place I'm introducing today: Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch.
And it turned out to be a seriously amazing galbi-jjim (braised short rib) spot. I honestly wanted to know the recipe — shouldn't this be on some 'places to revisit in Jeonju' list already?
If you're looking for dinner near Jeonbuk National University, especially if you want spicy food with a drink, don't take my word lightly — go try it!!!!!!! (I'm serious)

Where is Hwanyeong in Jeonju, and what are its hours?
Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch is located at 18 Myeongnyun 5-gil, 1st floor, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk. It's open daily from 17:00 to 02:00 the next day, with last order at 01:00.

It's right in the Gujeongmun food alley in front of Jeonbuk National University, so I could park at the public lot near campus and walk there quickly!

I was excited even before going in. The red lighting made it stand out even more at night. Fish-shaped decor caught my eye in several spots.

What the inside of Hwanyeong feels like
The inside of Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch was cozier than I expected. Tiled walls with wooden tables gave off a comfortable vibe for drinking. Both the tables and chairs looked really clean!
Even on a weekday evening, quite a few tables were filled, so it clearly seemed like a popular spot.
Hwanyeong's menu: what comes with the galbi-jjim set

Looking at the menu, there were quite a variety of options. But we already decided before coming that we were ordering the galbi-jjim set haha. So we ordered the galbi-jjim set with a half-and-half jeon (savory pancake) selection! We also chose the self-made rice balls.
While we waited, the side dishes came out first — seaweed soup, corn salad, and soy-marinated onions were set on the table. The seaweed soup was mild, which was perfect for warming up before the spicy food.

We ordered cola instead of soju, and I loved that they served it in a frosted beer mug packed with ice!!

Regular-spice galbi-jjim and self-serve rice balls
Finally, the main dish arrived!! Once it started bubbling, a spicy, rich smell spread right away.
You can choose between two spice levels for the galbi-jjim, and we picked regular! Regular is the default flavor haha.

While the bean sprouts on top wilted down, we shaped our own rice balls with the self-serve rice.

How good would this taste dipped in the galbi-jjim sauce!! T.T

How was the half-and-half jeon at Hwanyeong?
The half-and-half jeon we ordered was absolutely amazing. The outside is genuinely crispy. I dipped it in the soy sauce, but honestly I think I could eat five pieces without any sauce at all. If I said ten, that'd sound exaggerated. I'm not exaggerating though — it's genuinely that good, why is it so tasty.
The chive jeon was so good too T.T. Being able to order two different flavors at once — the owner is a genius...

Portion size, spicy broth and what's in the pot
Seeing the bean sprouts and glass noodles piled high on top of the galbi-jjim, I could tell the portion was really generous. Eating rice balls with this spicy, hot, rich broth along with the meat and bean sprouts... it's honestly the best.

As it kept bubbling, the vegetables cooked down and the broth got even richer. If there'd been one more person, we could've made fried rice with this broth too — ugh, such a shame T.T
There was even sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) inside haha.

The galbi-jjim had rich seasoning soaked all the way through, so eating it with the rice balls felt like I could keep going endlessly 🥹🥹✨✨💗

Is Hwanyeong worth it for late drinks near Gujeongmun?
The owner even gave us a complimentary steamed egg and a salad on the house, so we ate really well. Just like the reviews I saw on Naver, the owner was kind and the food was so delicious — genuinely the best dinner I've had near Jeonbuk National University.
After my exams are over, I'm definitely going back to Jeonju to eat Hwanyeong's galbi-jjim as a drinking snack. If you're looking for a dinner spot near Jeonbuk National University in Jeonju, I can confidently recommend Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch!! If you're searching for a place near Gujeongmun that's open late, this is worth checking out.
If it's your first visit, don't get distracted by anything else — make sure you try the galbi-jjim set!!! 🍀
