Gwangju Cheomdan Chinese restaurant with seafood nurungji soup: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant near Lotte Mart in Cheomdan, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, carrying on the line of Daeheung Banjeom, which opened on Chungjang-ro in the 1950s. Three diners ordered the 1-person set meal (12,900 won), jjamppong (10,900 won), the 1-person seafood nurungji soup (15,900 won) and half yangjangpi (18,900 won), and still got self-serve green onion kimchi, free rice, sweet potato fritters and ice cream. The owner's pick, the seafood nurungji soup, and the smoky meat-based jjamppong made Mayway a solid lunch stop in Cheomdan.

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant that recently opened near Lotte Mart in Cheomdan, Gwangju. I paid it a visit today 🚗 The place turned out to be clean and had a nice variety of menu items, so I got to enjoy several dishes. It's a spot I wanted to introduce, so here's my review 😊

Where is Mayway, and what are its hours and parking?

Mayway is located near Lotte Mart in Cheomdan, at 6 Cheomdangangbyeon-ro 87beon-gil, 102ho, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. It's open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00, and last order at 21:30.

There wasn't a dedicated parking lot, so we used street parking nearby during our visit.

Mayway got its start as Daeheung Restaurant on Chungjang-ro back in the 1950s! Knowing that made me even more excited to taste the flavors carried on by a Chinese restaurant with such a long history 👍

Sign for the event: ₩1,000 tangsuyuk with 2 draft beers

There's currently an event running: order 2 draft beers and get tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) for just ₩1,000🍺‼️ Great news if you want to enjoy a draft beer at a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan!

What is the dining room like at Mayway in Cheomdan?

Spacious, clean interior of Mayway

✨ The inside of Mayway was spacious and comfortable! Being a newly opened Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, it had an overall clean atmosphere, and the tables were spaced well apart.

Widely spaced tables at Mayway

It looked like a good place to visit as a family, and comfortable enough for a meal with friends too, so I highly recommend it as a Cheomdan lunch spot 👍

And there's a big TV installed in the middle of the dining room, so it would also be a great spot to watch a game while eating on match days!

What's on the Mayway menu and how much does it cost?

Looking through Mayway's menu, they had everything from basic Cheomdan lunch spot staples like jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and tangsuyuk, to cooked dishes like yangjangpi (mixed vegetable and seafood platter) and seafood nurungji (scorched rice) soup ✨ What especially caught my eye was the 1-person set meal, which lets you try jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all at once! It's a great option when you're dining solo but want to try a little of several dishes, or just want variety 😆

Today the three of us ordered the 1-person set meal, jjamppong, seafood nurungji soup, and half yangjangpi 📝

  • 1-person set meal (jjajang, jjamppong, tangsuyuk) ₩12,900
  • Jjamppong ₩10,900
  • 1-person seafood nurungji soup ₩15,900
  • Yangjangpi (half) ₩18,900

Mayway's free extras: self-serve green onion kimchi, rice and sweet potato fritters

For basic side dishes at Mayway, you help yourself at the self-serve bar! It had danmuji (pickled radish), onion, corn salad, and green onion kimchi. * The green onion kimchi was especially good 👍

I also loved that rice is provided free of charge 🍚♥️ Handy when you want rice alongside the jjamppong broth or a cooked dish!!

After we ordered, they also brought out sweet potato fritters on the house. Nice to nibble on before the meal, and they came out warm and tasty!

The food we ordered came out faster than expected. Great speed of service for a Cheomdan lunch spot! Let me introduce each dish in the order it arrived 🤗

Seafood nurungji soup, 15,900 won: the owner's recommendation at Mayway

First up is the seafood nurungji soup the owner recommended ‼️ It comes out with nurungji (scorched rice) in a stone pot, then a thick seafood sauce is poured over it.

Once the sauce goes in, it starts bubbling away and a delicious smell drifts up 🤤

There was plenty of seafood in it, and the nurungji went down smoothly once mixed with the sauce! The flavor was a bit spicy yet mellow, and it left me with a warm, comforting feeling inside — I especially liked that 👍 * I get why the owner recommends it... ⭐️ Highly recommend this one ⭐️

Jjamppong, 10,900 won: meat-based broth instead of seafood

Next is the jjamppong! At Mayway, a go-to spot for jjamppong in Cheomdan, the jjamppong isn't seafood-based but meat-based. There were plenty of vegetables in it, and the broth had a subtle smoky flavor.

Meat-based jjamppong packed with vegetables

A full bowl of Mayway jjamppong

The broth was slightly spicy with some depth, and I liked the rich flavor unique to a meat base! The noodles felt a bit thinner than the usual Chinese restaurant noodles, but they soaked up the broth well, which made them even tastier 👍 The flavor itself was so good, more than the composition, that I want to recommend this as a Cheomdan jjamppong spot!!

1-person set meal, 12,900 won: jjajangmyeon, jjamppong and tangsuyuk together

1-person set meal with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk in one dish

Mayway's 1-person set meal comes with jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all served together in one dish. It comes in a bowl shaped like a flower, so it looked pretty cute too 🌸

First, the jjajangmyeon had that old-school jjajang feel. It was slightly sweet with a nutty flavor — familiar yet delicious!

The jjamppong tasted the same as the one we ordered separately 😊

Ketchup-based tangsuyuk served with the set meal

The tangsuyuk was similar to typical ketchup-based Chinese restaurant tangsuyuk, but with a slightly different twist. It had a sweet flavor, and the batter was fried well and crispy!

The 1-person set meal seems like it would suit office workers or solo diners looking for a Cheomdan lunch spot 😊 Since you can try three dishes at once, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a little of several things.

Half yangjangpi, 18,900 won: sea cucumber and shrimp in one platter

We also ordered the half yangjangpi. It came with a variety of vegetables, sea cucumber, and shrimp, and even as a half portion, it was more generous than expected.

Yangjangpi mixed with mustard sauce

Mix it all up with the mustard sauce and it's got a pungent, delicious kick! Recommended as a cooked dish when jjajangmyeon or jjamppong alone don't feel like enough 👍

Dessert at Mayway: free ice cream

After the meal, they brought out ice cream for dessert. Everything was overall delicious, and the owner was so friendly that we finished the meal in a great mood 😋

Final verdict: is Mayway worth it for lunch in Cheomdan?

  • ✔️ Spacious, clean interior
  • ✔️ A wide range of cooked dishes
  • ✔️ A 1-person set meal for sampling several items
  • ✔️ Sweet potato fritters and ice cream on the house

If you're looking for a Cheomdan lunch spot with a varied menu and a comfortable dining room, give Mayway in Cheomdan a try ‼️ 😊
