Busan shabu kalguksu with extra noodles and 140g sirloin: Yunujae

In short

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu is a Korean restaurant in Munhyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, where one meal runs from shabu-shabu to kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) and fried rice. On a Sunday lunch visit the wait was 30 minutes, and the order was the shabu kalguksu for two in the spicy red broth plus a mushroom add-on, one extra kalguksu noodle serving and 140g of extra sirloin. The spicy broth with mushrooms and the self-serve kimchi bar are why Yunujae keeps pulling regulars back.

On days like these when a hot, spicy soup sounds perfect, nothing beats shabu kalguksu. This time I went to Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu. True to its name, it's a place where you can enjoy shabu-shabu and kalguksu together, so it's great for when you want a really filling meal. I visited on a Sunday for lunch, and true to its reputation as a Munhyeon-dong favorite, there was a 30-minute wait before I got in.

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu menu and what we ordered

This is actually a place I visit often, so let me recommend my favorite order. We ordered shabu kalguksu for two in the spicy red broth. The basic set comes with sirloin, vegetables, mushrooms, then moves on to kalguksu and fried rice. On top of that we added extra mushrooms, one extra kalguksu noodle serving, and 140g extra sirloin, so we ate quite a lot!

Water and side dishes are self-serve, and the self-serve bar has two kinds of kimchi. The kimchi here is genuinely delicious!!! Everyone should grab plenty of it~~ Different broth flavors are also available at the self-serve bar.

The spicy red broth at Yunujae wins you over first

Pot of spicy red broth loaded with mushrooms

We chose the spicy red broth. It came out already loaded with mushrooms, which looked appetizing right from the start, and as it boiled, the mushrooms and vegetables released their flavor into an increasingly rich broth.

Because we added mushrooms, the broth was really packed with them. There were several kinds of mushrooms, not just enoki, so the texture was varied, and the spicy broth combined with the mushroom aroma kept me spooning up soup nonstop.

If you're looking for a Munhyeon-dong restaurant and you like spicy soups, this style of shabu kalguksu should suit you well. Rather than being aggressively spicy just for the sake of it, it's the kind of broth where flavors build up as you simmer the shabu-shabu ingredients — I liked that.

Sirloin tastes best cooked piece by piece at the table

Thinly sliced sirloin for shabu-shabu

The sirloin came out thinly sliced, so we dipped it briefly in the broth to cook. Being so thin, it cooked quickly, and it was a good combination with the mushrooms.

Sirloin and mushrooms cooked in the broth

With shabu-shabu, you start by eating the meat and vegetables, then add the noodles once you've eaten a fair amount, so the mood keeps changing even though it's technically one dish — that's part of the fun. If you're looking for a Munhyeon-dong shabu kalguksu spot, it's worth thinking about the menu progression too.

Was the mushroom add-on worth it? ★★★★★

Personally, the add-on I was most satisfied with this meal was the mushrooms. I already tend to like mushrooms in shabu-shabu, and the spicy broth paired with mushrooms really well.

As the broth boiled, the mushrooms got softer and softer and the soup absorbed more mushroom flavor, so it felt like the taste deepened as time went on. You can tell from the photos there's a lot of mushroom in there — if you're searching for Munhyeon-dong restaurants and you like mushrooms, adding them seems worth it.

Plate of extra 140g sirloin

You can eat just fine with the basic portion, but we added 140g of sirloin. Since there were two of us, we wanted a bit more meat, and in the end, I'm glad we added it.

Finishing with kalguksu noodles and fried rice

After eating through most of the shabu-shabu, we added the kalguksu noodles. We also added one extra serving of kalguksu. The noodles are genuinely delicious. Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu... my favorite restaurant ★★★★★

Noodles soaked in broth

Boiling the kalguksu noodles in the spicy broth let the soup soak into the noodles, making it feel like a whole different dish. Unlike eating kalguksu from the start, the broth had already simmered with plenty of meat and mushrooms, so it was richer and paired really well with the noodles.

Fried rice made with leftover broth

And of course, the final course is fried rice! The leftover broth's flavor soaked into the rice, and as it fried up with seaweed flakes and other ingredients, it got that nutty, savory flavor. Finishing off shabu kalguksu with fried rice really felt like a complete, proper meal.

Is shabu kalguksu for two enough at Yunujae?

If you're looking for a Munhyeon-dong restaurant and you prefer a place where you can enjoy things step by step — meat, then vegetables, then kalguksu, then fried rice — rather than just shabu-shabu alone, this could be a good option.

Overall this time we ordered spicy shabu kalguksu for two + mushroom add-on + extra kalguksu noodle serving + 140g extra sirloin, and it was quite a lot for two people. (That's because we're pigs... the basic set alone would have filled us up completely!!)

If you especially like spicy broth, mushrooms, or shabu-shabu, this is a place worth visiting at least once. If you want to eat meat and noodles generously like we did, just use the add-on menu. Being able to enjoy hot broth, shabu-shabu, kalguksu and fried rice all in one sitting made Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu a memorable Munhyeon-dong restaurant.
