Buldak mayo live shrimp at Garak Market fish shop Yeongjae Susan

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi and seafood takeout shop at 1F C-10 of the Garak Mall sales building in Garak Market, Songpa, Seoul. On an after-work stop, 500g of live shrimp (20,000 won) and a mini wild croaker sashimi set were packed to go, and the shop threw in a free fish stew kit with sea bream head and bones even though only sashimi was ordered. The night's verdict: shrimp stunned in ice water, dipped in buldak mayo (spicy chicken sauce mayo) and washed down with white wine.

Live shrimp and assorted sashimi spread packed from Yeongjae Susan

Live shrimp keeps showing up on my Instagram feed these days, so I finally caved and stopped by Garak Market on my way home from work 🐢 I picked up live shrimp 500g and a mini wild croaker sashimi combo at Yeongjae Susan, a well-known sashimi spot at Garak Market. The shrimp was ₩20,000, and I could even use a 20% discount coupon by ordering through Naver. Between the sashimi and the free fish stew kit they threw in, it was plenty for a proper seafood spread at home.

How to get the 20% Naver discount, plus delivery range

Notice for Yeongjae Susan's 20% Naver order discount

You can use a 20% discount coupon when ordering through Naver at Yeongjae Susan. Their official Instagram also has the 20% off notice for Naver orders and reservations! The live shrimp I bought was ₩20,000 for 500g, and with the coupon applied it comes out to around ₩16,000, so I'd recommend checking the Naver order benefits before you visit.

Delivery options were pretty varied too. Coupang Eats, Baemin1, and Yogiyo offer free delivery within a 4km radius of Yeongjae Susan, while Ddangyo and Baemin store delivery cover up to 7km, with extra delivery fees depending on distance. Through the Ineo Gyoju Pirates app, you can apparently order from up to 100km away, paying delivery fees based on distance.

Inside Yeongjae Susan: live tanks, menu board and packing

Visiting Yeongjae Susan in person, I saw a long row of big tanks out front where you can check out live fish, shrimp, abalone, and shellfish for yourself.

Sashimi menu board with prices by size at Yeongjae Susan

Above the tanks, a big menu board with photos and prices for each sashimi combo and size made it easy to compare options even on a first visit. There were quite a few choices — croaker and flounder combo, assorted tuna, flounder plus mullet, thin-sliced assorted sashimi, wild croaker combo — sized from mini to small, medium, and large, so it looked easy to pick based on group size.

Sashimi packed in a handled carrier bag
Inside of the sashimi package neatly arranged with an ice pack

One thing I personally loved was the packing. Instead of just tossing the sashimi into a plastic bag, they packed it neatly into a proper handled carrier bag with an ice pack. Market sashimi packing always makes me a little nervous about water leaking or containers tipping over on the way home, but this packing was sturdy and tidy, so it wasn't much hassle to carry on the way from work, and everything was still neatly arranged when I opened it up at home.

What comes in the mini wild croaker sashimi set

Thick-cut mini wild croaker sashimi combo

The sashimi I ordered was the mini wild croaker combo! It's an assorted combo of wild croaker, croaker skin, swim bladder, large flounder, and large red seabream. Every piece was sliced thick throughout, so the texture was great to chew, and I liked being able to try several kinds of sashimi at once. What stood out most, though, was the packing — it was really neat and sturdy for the trip home.

A free fish stew kit with a sashimi-only order

Pot of hearty fish stew cooked at home

We only ordered sashimi, but they threw in a fish stew kit too. It had sea bream head and bones, bean sprouts, radish, and more, and once we actually cooked it at home, the portion turned out to be way more than expected. We added shrimp ramyeon noodles, potato sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), and dumplings to turn it into a really hearty stew. Finishing it off with the leftover drinks from the sashimi and a spicy hot broth was the perfect way to end the meal haha.

500g of Garak Market live shrimp for 20,000 won

Packed 500g of live shrimp from Yeongjae Susan

Honestly, the main reason I went to Garak Market that day was the live shrimp 🦐 I kept seeing live shrimp mukbang videos on Instagram and wanted to try it myself, and Yeongjae Susan had fresh live shrimp, 500g for ₩20,000.

About 17–18 live shrimp in the package

When I received it, there were about 17–18 shrimp inside, and it felt like they packed more than the standard 500g, plenty for two people. When I opened the package, the shrimp were still jumping around — that's how fresh they were!

Peeled shrimp meat arranged on a plate

We stunned them in ice water for about 10–20 minutes, then peeled and ate them right away. The meat was firm and chewy, and I finally understood why live shrimp mukbang videos are so popular these days. The combo of live shrimp with chilled white wine was really great too.

Grocery run at the Garak Mall second-floor mart

Since we were already there picking up sashimi and shrimp, we also stopped by the mart on the 2nd floor of Garak Mall. The range of groceries was surprisingly wide — wine, ice, buldak sauce, dumplings, ramyeon, fruit — so it was a good spot to grab a few things while we were there haha.

White wine and buldak sauce bought at the mart

We picked up white wine, ice, ramyeon, dumplings, and even a bottle of buldak (spicy chicken) sauce. We mixed the buldak sauce with vegan mayo we had at home to make buldak mayo, and dipped the live shrimp in it — the spicy, savory sauce went really well with the chewy shrimp haha.

Honestly, this combo of live shrimp, buldak mayo, and chilled white wine is one I want to repeat exactly the same way next time!

Is Yeongjae Susan worth it for sashimi takeout?

Packing the wild croaker combo and Garak Market live shrimp together from Yeongjae Susan made for a really easy seafood spread at home.

  • Anyone who wants thick-cut, mixed-variety sashimi in one go
  • Anyone curious about the fresh live shrimp all over social media lately
  • Anyone who wants to pack sashimi from Garak Market for drinks at home

If any of that sounds like you, it might be worth checking out Yeongjae Susan, a sashimi takeout spot at Garak Market.
