Sadang izakaya for a yukhoe platter and buckwheat noodles: Susan

In short

Susan Sadang Main Branch is an izakaya near Sadang Station Exit 7 in Dongjak, Seoul, where raw fish and seafood are served as drinking dishes. The writer ordered the flounder-and-yukhoe platter and sweet shrimp buckwheat noodles with cheongha (clear rice liquor), wrapping the flounder in aged kimchi and seaweed while the lightly seasoned yukhoe (beef tartare) tasted nutty. Susan Sadang Main Branch is a solid pick for friend get-togethers or work dinners where everyone shares several dishes.

I was looking for a good spot in Sadang for raw fish or seafood with a drink, so I stopped by Susan Sadang Main Branch (수산 사당본점). It's close to Sadang Station so it was easy to find, and it also looked like a solid choice for a group gathering or work dinner.

What is the atmosphere like inside?

Clean interior seating at Susan Sadang Main Branch

Overall the place felt clean but relaxed — good for a comfortable drink. It wasn't too quiet or formal, more like a place to chat with friends over snacks. Being close to Sadang Station makes it convenient too, so it seemed like a good spot for friend meetups or work dinners.

There was even a little street-cart-style model to give it that izakaya feel, and a good variety of drinks too.

The menu lineup and what we ordered

Menu listing raw fish, seafood, and yukhoe dishes

Susan Sadang Main Branch had all kinds of anju (drinking snacks) — raw fish, seafood dishes, yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), and more. Beyond the sashimi, there were also noodle dishes like buckwheat noodles, so it seemed like a great place to order a bunch of different things with a group. We went with sweet shrimp buckwheat noodles and flounder-yukhoe combo this time. And for drinks, we ordered cheongha, which pairs well with raw fish!

A glass of welcome sake served before the food

Once we ordered our anju, a welcome drink came out first — it was sake, and having a shot before the food arrived made for a really nice starter.

Flounder-and-yukhoe platter: flounder wrapped in aged kimchi

Flounder-yukhoe combo with flounder sashimi and beef tartare together

The flounder-yukhoe combo. The flounder came with aged kimchi, and wrapping it up in the kimchi and seaweed for one big bite was so good. Add wasabi and soy sauce on top and the flavor just explodes in your mouth — perfect anju to go with cheongha. The yukhoe was tender and lightly seasoned, savory and a little salty, really delicious.

Table with flounder-yukhoe combo and a glass of cheongha

Flounder and yukhoe really are the classic drinking snacks — the cheongha just kept going down smoothly. Now that I'm getting older, I find myself preferring clean, soft raw fish dishes over heavier fried anju, haha.

Sweet shrimp buckwheat noodles with a nutty perilla oil aroma

Sweet shrimp buckwheat noodles. Topped with springy, sweet raw shrimp, and the combination with the buckwheat noodles worked really well. The shrimp's soft sweetness plus the chewy noodles made for a great pairing with drinks.

There was also plenty of perilla oil in there, and that nutty aroma was so nice. Mixing in a noodle dish partway through the raw fish and seafood kept things from feeling heavy, and I kept going back for more. If you like shrimp, this one's worth ordering.
