Magok eel restaurant: 30,000 won kizami hitsumabushi texture: Kikukawa

In short

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is a Nagoya-style eel restaurant on the outdoor ground floor of Building A at One Grove in Magok, Seoul. A couple ordered the kizami hitsumabushi at 30,000 won and the regular hitsumabushi at 38,000 won, eating each bowl in the set order of eel first, then toppings, then dashi broth. The finely chopped kizami eel felt too soft for a husband who prefers a chewy bite, but Kikukawa's kizami bowl looks like a smart pick for children.

My husband said out of nowhere that he wanted eel, and I'd heard there was a place near us in One Grove serving authentic Nagoya-style eel, so we went to check it out!

Entrance and sign of Kikukawa One Grove Branch

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa serves authentic Nagoya-style eel dishes with roots going back to 1932 in Japan, and this branch has only been open about half a year.

Kikukawa's entrance outside One Grove Building A

The entrance isn't actually inside the One Grove building itself but on the outside — if you're moving through the inside of One Grove Building A, pass the Tim Hortons, turn left toward the Sukseongdo store, keep going straight, and once you step outside the building it's on your right. The building is clean and has just the right Japanese atmosphere for enjoying an eel rice bowl.

Private room, window seats and how many baby chairs?

Interior with window seats and a private room

Looking around inside Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch, there's the main hall, a private room, and window-side seating.

Window seats in the main hall are given to reservation guests first. The room is great for guests who want to talk quietly and enjoy the meal together, and it's also nice for entertaining guests.

Baby chairs set up at the restaurant

They keep a tidy set of 4 baby chairs, which is great for guests visiting with kids. I didn't bring my kids that day, but it made me want to come back with them.

Kikukawa's hitsumabushi table spread

Besides the wide menu, they also offer takeout lunch box service, but we decided to eat rice bowls there. We chose kizami hitsumabushi and regular hitsumabushi — since each order is made fresh after you order, it takes a little while to come out.

How to eat hitsumabushi in three steps

This is how Kikukawa's hitsumabushi arrives — eel sliced into nice bite-sized pieces sitting on top of the rice bowl.

Instruction sheet explaining how to eat hitsumabushi

A sheet explaining how to eat it comes along with the dish: eat the eel first, then add the toppings, and finish by pouring in the dashi broth and eating it like a soup.

Hitsumabushi eaten soup-style with dashi poured in

I tried eating it exactly as instructed and it was so good! If you feel like it needs more sauce, there's eel rice bowl sauce on the table to add, and I especially loved it once I poured in the dashi and ate it soup-style.

How did the 30,000 won kizami hitsumabushi taste and feel?

Finely chopped kizami hitsumabushi rice bowl

Kizami hitsumabushi literally means "kizami" — chopped — so it's hitsumabushi with the eel finely chopped into bite-sized pieces.

For my husband, who likes a big, chewy bite, the texture was a little disappointing, but it looked especially good for giving to kids.

Two eel rice bowls served together

The dishes come out looking clean and put-together, great for treating someone, and if you're looking for a great eel rice bowl spot near Magok One Grove, this Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa is well worth a stop.
