Yongsan late lunch with flying fish roe rice balls: Jjigaen Jjukkumi
In short
Jjigaen Jjukkumi Yongmun Market Branch is a jjukkumi samgyeopsal (spicy octopus and pork belly) restaurant near Yongmun Market in Yongsan, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Hyochang Park Station. After buying computer accessories at Yongsan Electronics Market, the writer stopped in for a late lunch: 2 servings of spicy octopus and pork belly with flying fish roe rice balls and a glass noodle add-in, then 2 servings of cheese fried rice to finish. The sauce at Jjigaen Jjukkumi is so good that even a full stomach ends with the fried rice pan scraped clean.

My wife recently changed jobs, haha. So we went shopping at Yongsan Electronics Market for a keyboard, mouse, and other computer accessories, and afterward stopped for lunch at a Yongsan favorite for spicy octopus — Jjigaen Jjukkumi Yongmun Market Branch.

Where is Jjigaen Jjukkumi Yongmun Market Branch, and how do you book it?
This Yongsan Electronics Market-area favorite sits near Yongmun Market, so it wasn't hard to find. Apparently there can be a wait on weekends or at peak meal times, so I'd recommend booking ahead on Naver — reserve and you get double the pork belly!!

We looked it up before visiting and apparently Jjigaen Jjukkumi was even featured once on the show Amazing Saturday, haha. We came well past lunch hour, so there weren't many other customers.

Spicy octopus and pork belly for two, plus flying fish roe rice balls and glass noodles
Coming to an octopus spot, of course we had to order the octopus, haha. We ordered 2 servings of jjukkumi samgyeopsal with flying fish roe rice balls and a glass noodle add-in.

Side dishes included stir-fried fish cake, seasoned bean sprouts, radish wraps, and perilla leaves. We grabbed extra bean sprouts to load into the octopus while it cooked, and it was so good!!

A sauce for wrapping the octopus, along with flying fish roe, comes out too. I always feel like octopus and flying fish roe are such a great match, haha.

The jjukkumi samgyeopsal for two came with a huge portion. There was plenty of octopus especially, more than enough for two people.
There were bean sprouts on it from the start, and we added even more from the side dish and cooked those in too, haha. I really love bean sprouts lol. The octopus sauce is so delicious that eating it together with bean sprouts is just amazing!!!
Once the octopus was mostly cooked, the owner brought over the glass noodles we'd ordered and mixed them in for us personally.

The staff shape the flying fish roe rice balls for you
At other restaurants you usually have to mix and shape the flying fish roe rice balls yourself, but at Jjigaen Jjukkumi the owner actually shapes them and brings them to your table, haha. So there's no mixing required, you just eat — which was great!! There was so much flying fish roe packed into the rice balls that eating them with the octopus was really delicious, haha.

How does the spicy octopus taste?
Apparently the owner personally cleans and seasons fresh octopus every day. Maybe that's why the octopus was so fresh with plump, meaty texture — the bite was fantastic. The sauce is seriously incredible, haha.

The octopus alone is delicious, but since it's jjukkumi samgyeopsal, a bite of pork belly too. Pork belly is always right... and it's amazing eaten together with the octopus, lol.

The glass noodles are the flat kind too, so eaten together with the bean sprouts they're wonderfully chewy!!

Time to properly wrap it in perilla leaves. The sauce and flying fish roe are just amazing again, lol. I don't think I've had a better sauce-and-roe combo at any other octopus place, haha.
Finishing with cheese fried rice for two
We ordered 2 servings of cheese fried rice. After round one with the octopus, time to start round two with fried rice, lol. The sauce was so good that even though we were full, we ordered two servings to really eat our fill, haha.
The owner finely chopped the leftover octopus and stir-fried it into a delicious fried rice.

Can you see how good this fried rice looks?? The sauce was so incredible that the octopus was already amazing, and frying rice in that same sauce made the fried rice incredible too, lol. Absolutely the best. If you visit Jjigaen Jjukkumi, you have to get the fried rice, no question!! Haha.

Scraped the pan clean again today, lol. This is exactly how I keep gaining weight... my stomach was already completely full but it was so good I kept eating anyway, haha. If you're near Hyochang Park Station or shopping at Yongsan Electronics Market and looking for an amazing octopus restaurant, I highly recommend Jjigaen Jjukkumi Yongmun Market Branch!!
