Suyeong pork barbecue restaurant: Geobugi Dongne's aged pork

In short

Geobugi Dongne is a 14-day-aged pork barbecue restaurant in Suyeong, Busan. Three adults ordered the couple set, two extra portions of ogyeopsal, doenjang-jjigae, and rice, and left full for ₩60,000; the pork and self-serve side-dish bar were good, though you cook the meat yourself and there is no on-site parking.

While looking for somewhere to have dinner in Namcheon-dong, three of us walked to Geobugi Dongne (거북이동네) Busan Namcheon Branch. It specializes in pork aged for 14 days, and we ate our fill by adding ogyeopsal and meal dishes to the couple set.

Where is it, and is parking available?

The restaurant is on the first floor at 414 Suyeong-ro, Suyeong-gu, Busan, along Suyeong-ro. It had always been easy to spot when passing by, and I had seen it busy with waiting guests on weekends. We visited without a separate reservation that day.

There is no parking at the restaurant itself. We walked because it was nearby. The last order time listed in the original post is 21:30.

What are the atmosphere and ordering system like?

The interior had an industrial feel, with copper pipes running across the ceiling, and the restaurant felt tidy. Each table had a tablet, so we could add menu items without calling a staff member.

What did three adults order, and how much was it?

Since the couple set, intended for two, did not seem like enough for three people, we added two portions of ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly). We also ordered doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and gamasotbap (pot-cooked rice).

  • Couple set: ₩32,500
  • Ogyeopsal: two additional portions
  • Meal dishes: doenjang-jjigae and gamasotbap
  • Total meal cost for three adults: ₩60,000

The three of us ate our fill with this order. Being able to add only what we needed through the tablet made it easy to adjust the amount.

What is available at the side-dish bar?

We picked up the side dishes we needed ourselves from the side-dish bar at one side of the restaurant. There were ssam vegetables, dipping sauces, garlic, pickled radish, and corn, as well as salt, wasabi, and curry powder to pair with the food as we liked.

How was the aged ogyeopsal when we grilled it ourselves?

Geobugi Dongne's concept is pork aged for 14 days. The ogyeopsal we had that day was not tough to chew and broke apart tenderly, with a nutty flavor coming through before any porky smell.

The meat arrived trimmed into pieces that were easy to grill. Since it was self-grilling, two people in our group took turns cooking it. The balance of fat and lean meat felt right, and the oil did not splatter excessively while grilling.

We put the meat and potato slices on the grill, along with bracken fern, mushrooms, and Cheongyang chili peppers. The ogyeopsal turned golden and crisp outside while remaining moist inside. Its nutty flavor was strong, so I often reached for it with just salt.

How were the doenjang-jjigae and gamasotbap with the meal?

The doenjang-jjigae had plenty of tofu, zucchini, and enoki mushrooms. The broth was pleasantly spicy without tasting muddy, and it was not overly spicy for me. We finished it quickly between bites of meat. I heard you can add sujebi dough flakes as well.

The gamasotbap was topped with ginkgo nuts. Opening the lid released a nutty rice aroma, and the grains were fluffy and distinct. It worked well on its own or topped with grilled meat, and there was enough for the three of us to share.

Would I return with family or friends?

The side-dish bar was self-serve, but staff refilled needed dishes quickly, and grill changes were not delayed. I was happy with the combination of aged ogyeopsal and meal dishes, so I would consider coming back for dinner with family or friends. Still, you need to grill the meat yourself and there is no on-site parking, so it is best to decide how to get there in advance.
