Eel restaurant in Nowon, Seoul with a deodeok pickle swap: Cheonsanga

In short

Cheonsanga Jangeoga Hagae Branch is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant in Hagae-dong, Nowon, Seoul. The 3-person set costs 104,000 won, and when the family asked to leave out the eoreokguljeot (salted oyster in chili sauce) the kitchen swapped in deodeok jangajji (pickled deodeok root) fragrant with sesame oil. Staff grilled the eel at the table and trimmed off the bones and fins, so the child ate every piece on top of dolchobap (hot stone bowl sushi rice) — a filling family dinner at Cheonsanga Jangeoga.

Why this Hagae-dong eel restaurant in Nowon for a tired kid?

Cheonsanga Jangeoga Hagae Branch is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant in Hagae-dong, Nowon-gu. After my kid's soccer academy held a tournament last week — the first one we'd joined — I could really see how much stamina was lacking, skill aside. So I went looking for an eel place to help build up some strength, found one close to home, and made a reservation.

Turns out my husband had actually taken our kid here before. He said the kid ate eel so well that day, and apparently it left an impression — because at home our kid once said, "Mom, you know freshwater eel is delicious, right?" This was that place.

It's close to the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art and also near the 2001 Outlet Junggye branch. We walked over, but there are five parking spots right in front of the building, so parking is pretty manageable too.

There's also a weekday lunch special. A bowl of eel soup at lunch sounds like it would really hit the spot!

Inside Cheonsanga Jangeoga Hagae Branch and its self-bar

Walk through the door of Cheonsanga Jangeoga Hagae Branch and you're greeted by a clean, warm interior. It's bigger than expected, with plenty of tables — good for groups too — and the spacing between tables is comfortable enough for a pleasant meal. The ventilation must be excellent, because there was none of the smoke or smell you'd expect from an eel restaurant.

Right by the entrance is a self-bar with ginger, pickled onion, radish jangajji, chili, garlic, baek kimchi (white kimchi), scallion kimchi, perilla leaf jangajji, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), and a generous pile of lettuce. Take scissors, a ladle, or bowls as needed. There are aprons hanging right next to it too — grab one if you want.

What comes in the 104,000-won 3-person eel set?

You order through a tablet pad, and we went with the 3-person set (₩104,000). It comes with 3 large eels, stone sushi (3 pcs), eoreokguljeot, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and sungnyung (scorched rice tea). Since we can't eat eoreokguljeot, we asked them to leave it out, and they brought deodeok jangajji instead. Oh my — the sesame oil aroma was incredible. Amazing!! (I know saying that makes me sound old, apparently...) But it really was delicious. T.T

All the side dishes were delicious. The pickled onions, and especially that scallion kimchi.. I'd never had it before, and wow, scallion kimchi is really good!

Charcoal-grilled freshwater eel, grilled by the staff

Thick cuts of freshwater eel went onto the charcoal. At Cheonsanga Jangeoga Hagae Branch, the staff grill the eel for you. Honestly, it's so, so convenient.. which made me feel the price was quite reasonable for three people.

The doenjang jjigae was delicious too!!!! The kind of taste that makes you finish a whole bowl of rice!

Deodeok jangajji and stone sushi. The deodeok jangajji was a real standout — genuinely delicious — and the stone sushi looked wonderfully sticky and dense. It all went straight into my kid's mouth though, so I never got a taste.

Freshwater eel grilling to a golden brown over charcoal

Golden brown and perfectly lined up, like the work of an eel-grilling master — the eel cooked to such a lovely finish. If I grilled it myself, the eel would shrink up, I'd never be able to line it up like that, and honestly I don't even know when it's properly done. Having the staff grill it made it so easy to enjoy. They even neatly trimmed off the bones and fins. And they were so kind about it too.

They kept adding more without a gap in the grilling, so considerate! The color on the eel is just gorgeous.

The combination the kid loved: eel on dolchobap sushi rice

My kid put eel on top of that stone sushi and ate it happily.

  • A bite dipped in salt for the pure flavor
  • A bite dipped in sauce with ginger
  • A bite wrapped in perilla leaf jangajji
  • A lettuce wrap with garlic, ssamjang, and pickled onion
  • A bite with scallion kimchi and radish jangajji

With so many ways to mix it up, you never get tired of it and just keep eating.

It was so good I was too busy eating to take photos...;ㅁ; And you can't skip the sungnyung served as a dessert at the end either. We were full so we ordered just one serving. A warm bowl to finish, and a clean, satisfying close — applause!!

Is Cheonsanga Jangeoga worth a return visit?

It was a truly hearty, satisfying meal. Most of all, I was happy my kid ate so well. I'm officially calling this a top eel restaurant in Hagae-dong, Nowon!

Oh, one note — the restroom is near the front of the shop, and you need to grab the key and tag it to use it. It's clean too.
