In short

Gongrabal Study Café is a 24-hour study café on Sangil-ro 12-gil in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, within walking distance of Gangil Station. On a first-ever study café visit, the writer took a Balance Zone solo desk to read, then looked around the window seats facing Godeok Stream, the curtain-divided Study Zone and the LIFE ZONE lounge with snacks, and returned the next day. There are days when your head is just full of noise. You have things to do, but staying home means your mind wanders off in ten directions, so I went looking for a study café — anywhere, really — where I could focus without all that mental clutter.

Honestly, this was my first time ever using a study café. I went in the first place because the interior looked pretty and I was curious, but once I actually stepped inside, the space was better than I expected.

And in the end, I went back again the next day. Two visits in a row. Even I was a little surprised at first.

Home is way more comfortable, so I wondered why I'd bother going to a study café again. But once I actually used it, it turned out to be a bit different from what I'd assumed.

How to walk to Gongrabal Study Café from Gangil Station

Gongrabal Study Café (공라밸스터디카페) is on the 2nd floor of a building at 95 Sangil-ro 12-gil, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, within walking distance of Gangil Station. First-timers might get a little lost here. When I went, the study café sign itself was hard to spot, so it was easier to just find the building first.

It's the building with Gangdong Pineman Academy in it, so using that as a landmark makes it a bit easier to find. For anyone looking for a study café around Gangil Station or Sangil-dong, I'd say this is a good location.

First impression: the beige and wood-tone interior

Gongrabal Study Café is decorated mainly in beige and wood tones, with plants scattered throughout. This interior was actually the biggest reason I decided to visit in the first place. It felt a bit warmer than a typical reading room.

Lights were placed throughout, but nothing felt too dark or too glaring. Since it wasn't just ceiling lighting but each seat had its own mood, there was fun just in looking around the space.

At first I just thought, 'this place is pretty.' But once I actually sat down, the feeling changed.

What the Balance Zone solo desk is like

I used a solo desk in Gongrabal's Balance Zone. There was plenty of room to lay out books and whatever else I needed, and it didn't feel cramped or boxed in around me.

The space between chairs was wide too, so sitting at the desk wasn't uncomfortable. Most of all, it suited me well since I wanted to focus on books and note-taking without a laptop. That's why I picked this seat on my first visit, and naturally gravitated back to it on my second.

Window seats with a direct view of Godeok Stream

The second spot I liked was the window seats. You can see the trees and walking path around Godeok Stream, and the atmosphere was better than I expected.

When you lift your head for a moment while studying, seeing green instead of just buildings or walls definitely feels more refreshing.

The Study Zone: curtained seats for deep focus

Gongrabal's study seats are divided by curtains, which seems well suited to anyone who wants to keep their line of sight separate from other seats.

I used the Balance Zone on this visit, but if you're someone who gets self-conscious about people around you while studying, this style of seat could be a good choice. It was nice that even within the same study café, the mood of each seat type is different enough to pick based on what you're doing that day.

Taking a break in the LIFE ZONE lounge

Gongrabal also has a separate lounge space called the LIFE ZONE. It felt less like a space for continuous studying and more like somewhere set apart for a quick rest.

Coffee, tea, and snacks were all available, so it was nice to take a short break in between. With a space like this around, you don't have to stay glued to your seat the whole time you're there.

Blankets, book stands and earplugs you can borrow

On one side of Gongrabal Study Café, there were blankets, book stands, stationery, and charging cables ready to use, along with disposable earplugs freely available.

As someone using a study café for the first time, having all these items ready to go was pretty convenient.

Why I came back to Gongrabal Study Café two days in a row

At home, time slips away while I'm doing this and that, but as soon as I sat down here, I found myself opening a book and actually starting the things I needed to do.

A book open on the solo desk

I read once that the feeling a space gives off can itself be the trigger that gets someone into focus mode. This time, I feel like I got a faint sense of what that actually means.

If you're looking for a study café around Gangil Station or Sangil-dong, Gongrabal Study Café has enough seat types that it's worth picking the one that suits you.
