Pork gukbap near Homeplus in Ulsan: modeum gukbap at Jongga

In short

Jongga Dwaejigukbap is a pork gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant in a back alley near Homeplus in Jung-gu, Ulsan. On a weekday visit around 2pm the order was seokkeo gukbap (meat and offal), modeum gukbap (meat, offal and sundae) and a side plate of sundae (blood sausage), and the rice and toppings were so generous that rice was left in the bowl. Between the clear, already-seasoned broth and the self-serve banchan bar, Jongga Dwaejigukbap ranks as the best pork gukbap in Ulsan.

My partner and I both love rice so much that pork gukbap (pork bone soup) is one of our soul foods. This time we visited Jongga Dwaejigukbap, famous as an Ulsan pork gukbap restaurant. Honestly, I'm not picky at all so I tend to think most things taste good, but I can confidently say this was the best pork gukbap I've had in Ulsan — a place that truly lives up to its reputation!

Where is Jongga Dwaejigukbap, and what are its hours and parking?

Jongga Dwaejigukbap, a well-known pork gukbap restaurant in Jung-gu, Ulsan, sits in an alley near Homeplus.

Exterior of Jongga Dwaejigukbap in the alley near Homeplus

There's no dedicated parking lot, so you just find a spot in the alley if one's open. The alley is narrow, so spots can run out — if you're already at Homeplus running errands, parking there and walking over could work well too. We visited well past the weekday lunch rush, so we found a spot in the alley and parked before heading in.

Store sign describing the domestic pork bone broth

Jongga Dwaejigukbap is described as using a rich broth made from 100% domestic pork bones, simmered without the usual gamey smell, leaving a savory, clean flavor. Tasting it myself, the broth arrived already seasoned, with no heaviness, greasiness, or gamey odor — just savory and clean, truly excellent.

Menu board listing pork gukbap, suyuk, and sundae

The menu at Jongga Dwaejigukbap is varied, broken down into pork, combo, mixed, organ, and sundae (blood sausage) versions. They also serve sundae, suyuk (boiled pork) set meals, pork neck stir-fry, boiled organs, suyuk, combo suyuk, mandu (dumplings), and milmyeon (cold wheat noodles). Everything is available to-go. In particular, mixed gukbap contains organs and meat, while combo gukbap contains organs, meat, and sundae — great for ordering based on preference. We ordered one mixed gukbap, one combo gukbap, and one sundae.

Inside Jongga Dwaejigukbap: clean, roomy and stocked with baby chairs

Spacious and clean seating inside Jongga Dwaejigukbap

We visited a bit past 2pm on a weekday, and the interior was spacious and clean — really nice.

Self-serve bar for side dishes

A warm, generous owner welcomed us, and there was a self-serve bar for the side dishes the owner makes fresh every morning.

A baby chair placed in a corner of the restaurant

Since I have a kid, whenever I search for restaurants I always check first whether they have a baby chair. This place has one, so you can dine comfortably even with a child along.

Vending machine coffee enjoyed after the meal

After the meal, there's vending machine coffee too, which somehow pairs perfectly with pork gukbap.

Self-serve banchan, somyeon noodles and chives on the table

Side dishes set out first before the pork gukbap

After ordering, we waited a bit and the side dishes were set out first. Neat little plates arrived, filled with sides that pair well with pork gukbap.

Generous portions of chives and thin wheat noodles

Chives came out generously, plus thin wheat noodles for each of us.

Diced radish kimchi, cabbage kimchi, and pepper relish side dishes

There were also sides the owner makes herself — diced radish kimchi, fresh cabbage kimchi, and spicy pepper relish. I especially loved the pepper relish. My partner doesn't normally go for pepper relish, but that day he kept saying how good it was and ate it right up, haha.

Mixed and combo gukbap served in earthenware bowls on the table

Big, hearty bowls of seokkeo and modeum gukbap

Our mixed gukbap and combo gukbap arrived. The rice portion was so generous — and I love rice so much I almost never leave any behind — but at Jongga Dwaejigukbap I actually left some rice uneaten ^^.. That's how generous the portions are.

Mixed gukbap with clear broth packed full of meat and organs

Mixed gukbap has only meat and organs, while combo gukbap has meat, organs, and sundae. Can you see how much meat and organ is packed into the clear broth? The broth comes pre-seasoned, and even without adding anything myself, it was exactly right for me. From the first bite I was surprised — clean, rich, and perfectly seasoned.

Meat and organs lifted out while stirring the bowl
Plump sundae inside the combo gukbap
A spoonful of gukbap toppings

When I stirred the bowl with my spoon, I was shocked at just how much meat and organ was packed in. The sundae was plump and delicious too, ㅠ. I think this might be the pork gukbap with the most toppings I've had in Ulsan. Actually, the most I've ever had in any gukbap, period. That's how generous they are with the ingredients.

The side plate of sundae you shouldn't skip

The sundae we ordered as a side to share came out in a genuinely generous portion. Taking a bite of the thick-cut sundae — wow, I really would have regretted not ordering it, ㅠ.

A side plate of sundae ordered separately

For anyone who feels it's a shame to just have pork gukbap alone, ordering a plate of sundae makes the meal so much more satisfying. If I drank, I think I'd want to crack open a bottle of soju with it, haha.

A meal combining gukbap with side dishes
A spoonful of pork gukbap topped with side dishes

Eating the delicious pork gukbap together with the side dishes made everything taste even better. The sides were genuinely so good I wanted to pack some up to take home.

Pork gukbap loaded generously with chili paste and chives

My partner loaded his bowl up with chili paste and chives. I like the clean flavor so I skipped the chili paste, but tasting his, it was good too. The chives came in such a generous portion that they went nicely with the sundae as well.

A satisfying meal on our day off with my partner at Jongga Dwaejigukbap, an Ulsan favorite! Now I understand why it's called one of the top three pork gukbap spots, haha. We left with full bellies and happy hearts ^^.
