You know those days when the weather is all over the place and you just need a change of pace for no particular reason? This calls for meat, of course! My husband and I headed to Gyeongan-dong in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, looking for a place where we could enjoy delicious black pork and a little Jeju Island atmosphere too. That is how I found Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch, while looking up good meat restaurants in Gyeongan-dong. They grill the aged black pork for you, so it was a very easy, comfortable meal.
Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch: Information
The address is 11-13 Gwangju-daero, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, on the first floor. Hours are 15:00–24:00 on weekdays and 12:00–24:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. You can enjoy aged black pork along with professional grilling service and a variety of sauces.

A Jeju-like atmosphere in Gyeongan-dong
Since we were driving, parking was the first thing I checked. Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch does not have its own parking lot in the building, so you can use the Munhwa Wedding Hall building parking lot. They provide a 2-hour parking voucher, and it is about a 1-minute walk from the parking-lot exit to the restaurant. The lot was spacious, so it was more convenient than I expected.
From the entrance, it feels like Jeju Island has landed right in the middle of Gyeongan-dong! Two dol hareubang (Jeju stone grandfather statues) greet you at the door. Inside, stone-wall-style details you might see in Jeju blend with soft lighting. It was more than just a place to eat meat—it had the feeling of a little Jeju trip, which made it nice for a date with my husband too.

The menu is full of Jeju Island vibes too.

Banchan and sauces to change up the black pork
Not long after we sat down, the banchan (small side dishes) began arriving one by one. There was myeongnanjeot (salted pollock roe), wasabi, pink salt, pepper, meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce), and a spicy house sauce—quite a range to pair with the meat.

Personally, I loved this setup because even the same black pork tasted a little different depending on the sauce. Dip one piece in salt, then the next in wasabi or meljeot! There was no chance for the meal to get repetitive. Gat kimchi (mustard-leaf kimchi), fresh geotjeori lettuce salad, and ssam vegetables for wrapping were served too, so it was easy to make each bite just how we liked it.
Juicy aged black pork
We ordered the Signature BBQ Set, ₩55,000.

A generous platter arrived with black pork belly, pork skin, and vegetables for grilling such as eggplant, mushrooms, and green onion. What especially caught my eye was the aging refrigerator in the middle of the restaurant. Seeing them take the meat out and prepare it right there made me even more excited to eat.
The staff also provided grilling service, so all we really had to do was eat! At a Korean barbecue restaurant, who grills the meat and how they do it is quietly important. They cooked it to just the right point and made sure it was ready to eat, so our conversation was never interrupted by grilling. One bite of the nicely browned black pork had a crisp exterior, a moist center, and savory juices that came through the more I chewed.

The smoky flavor made it delicious wrapped in ssam, and equally good with just salt or wasabi!

The pork skin was grilled sweet and salty, with that wonderfully chewy texture.
What does Jeju-style crab bibimbap taste like?
Even after eating our fill of meat, it felt a little sad to leave just like that, so we added the Jeju-style crab bibimbap too. It may feel a little different if you are expecting typical crab-marinated bibimbap (mixed rice). Rather than a sweet and spicy sauce, it had a subtle salty flavor reminiscent of meljeot and a hint of the sea. I was fine with this kind of distinctive flavor over something more intense, though I think it could be a love-it-or-hate-it dish depending on your taste.

We finished with warm nurungji (scorched rice), and it felt like it neatly cleared away the richness left after the meat! The gat kimchi was fresh and delicious, so we wrapped up a satisfying meal and left in a great mood.
A comfortable Gyeongan-dong black pork meal with staff grilling
Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch was a place where we could really enjoy aged black pork while taking in a Jeju-like atmosphere. Most of all, I liked that the staff grilled the meat themselves, so we could have a relaxed meal without worrying about the grill.

With salt, wasabi, myeongnanjeot, meljeot, and other sauces and accompaniments ready to go, it was also fun changing up the flavor of the meat to suit our tastes. If you are looking for black pork or a good meat restaurant in Gyeongan-dong, stop by Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch for a bit of Jeju atmosphere too :)
