Today, I visited Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch in Jung-gu. The bright red sign was visible from afar, so it was easy to find 👀 If you love tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes), the sign alone is enough to start making you hungry 😂

I checked out the menu outside first 👀 From tteokbokki to fish cakes, fritters, gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and sundae (Korean blood sausage), it had just about everything you expect at a Korean snack bar 😋 Ordering individual items would be great too, but I wanted to try a bit of everything, so the set menus kept catching my eye.

You can order at the kiosk near the entrance 😊 We wanted to taste lots of things at once, so we ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. It feels a little disappointing to come to a Korean snack bar and leave after having only tteokbokki, right? We put together a proper order, then headed inside 🚶♂️

After ordering, we went inside 😊 There were more tables than I expected, and the open kitchen was right there, giving it that lively Korean snack-bar atmosphere. Watching the food being prepared as soon as our order went in had my anticipation rising already 😆

The self-service bar has pickled radish, spoons, chopsticks, and bowls 😊

You can take what you need yourself, and since I tend to eat quite a lot of pickled radish with tteokbokki, I grabbed plenty 😆 Have a bite of spicy tteokbokki, then a bite of pickled radish, and you can quietly repeat that forever 😂

A full table of the Hyeonseoni Combo Set
After a short wait, the Hyeonseoni Combo Set arrived and filled the table 😍 With fritters, fish cakes, gimbap, tteokbokki, and sundae all appearing at once, it looked filling just sitting there. The moment it landed on the table, today's meal already felt like a success 😆 Let's try it one item at a time.

How spicy is the medium-spicy wheat-rice-cake tteokbokki?
I started with the tteokbokki 🌶️ It came with wheat rice cakes and fish cakes, and you can choose the spice level when ordering.

We ordered medium-spicy. At first it seemed manageable, but the heat slowly built as we kept eating 🔥 The sauce had soaked nicely into the chewy wheat rice cakes, so I kept reaching for more. Tteokbokki is such a strange food—why do I keep eating it when it's spicy? 😂

The fish cakes were really tender, and the broth was clean and refreshing 😊 Taking a spoonful of broth here and there while eating the tteokbokki felt like it reset my palate. Especially when the heat started building, one sip of fish-cake broth had me ready for battle again 😆

I also tried the gimbap, and it paired quite well with the spicy tteokbokki. It's like the tteokbokki attacks, then the gimbap calms things down a little 😂

How are the sundae and offal served?
You can't leave out sundae either 😋

Along with the sundae, the set included liver, lung, and other offal, so we could sample a good variety. The sundae was chewy and the offal mild, and both were tasty lightly dipped in the tteokbokki sauce. When you're having Korean snack-bar food, having sundae too somehow makes it feel like you've had a proper meal 😆

The sundae and offal were good on their own, but salt was provided separately too 😊 A light dip in salt brought out their mild flavor even more. Liver can be a little dry in texture, but dipping it in just a tiny bit of salt made it much tastier 😋

Fritters dipped in tteokbokki sauce
Next up: fritters 😆 The selection included gim-mari (seaweed noodle rolls), dumplings, squid, and sweet potato. I liked that it wasn't just one type, so we could try a variety. The crisp coating made them delicious on their own, but with tteokbokki sauce right next to them, it was hard to just pass it by 😎

The fritters were definitely better soaked in the tteokbokki sauce than eaten plain 😍 Once the spicy-sweet sauce soaked into the crispy fritters, they felt like an entirely different dish. Especially the gim-mari—the moment it hit the tteokbokki sauce, game over 😆

Review event to check before visiting
There was also a notice about a review event posted on one side of the restaurant 😊 Leave a review and you can receive tteokbokki fritters or a savory mayo rice ball, though the item offered differs a little between Google and Naver reviews. If you visit, it would be good to check which menu item comes with each review before joining in 😆 Eat well, leave a review, and get a complimentary menu item too—at this point, isn't that Korean snack-bar investing? 😂
