Jeju immersive media art attraction for families: Nohyeong Supermarket

While planning this Jeju trip, I spent so much time wondering where my child might enjoy. A friend of my child had visited Jeju a few months ago and recommended Nohyeong Supermarket. It is in Nohyeong-dong, so it was perfect for stopping by before heading to the airport; we visited with my child and parents on the day we went home.

What to know before visiting Nohyeong Supermarket

Nohyeong Supermarket's building is right beside the road, so it was easy to find. There is a parking lot right next to the building, which made parking easy. If you are visiting with a child, please note that strollers are not allowed inside. I recommend using a baby carrier for younger children.

Drink-included tickets and the souvenir shop

When you first arrive, you need to buy tickets at the ticket booth by the entrance. We bought tickets that included drinks with admission, then had cool drinks at the first-floor shop. There were lots of drinks children would like too, so I recommend getting one. There is also a souvenir shop in front of the ticket booth, with all kinds of little items that are great for souvenirs. We bought a tangerine bag here.

The way into the retro black-and-white world

Now that we had finished our refreshing drinks, shall we head inside? True to its 1980s concept, a retro, black-and-white atmosphere welcomed us. We held hands with my child and climbed the stairs, but they are the equivalent of about two or three floors, so please keep that in mind if you have trouble with your legs.

At the top of the stairs, there was a staff member and an entrance that felt like an old neighborhood corner shop. The staff member explained the precautions, and as soon as the briefing ended, the entrance door opened automatically! Since they knew I was pregnant, they told me not to be startled when the lights suddenly went out inside.

We stepped into the shop, and everything was black and white. My parents found this old-fashioned store so fascinating, and my child had so much fun just looking around.

After taking it in for a few minutes, an old TV suddenly crackled and began showing old news. Then it sparkled, the lights went out, and another entrance opened automatically.

If the staff member had not explained it beforehand, I really would have been startled, haha. My child gripped my hand tightly when the lights suddenly went out too.

A media art world beyond the automatic door

When this door opens automatically, you enter a world of media art. It felt a little like walking through a secret door. My child ran in excitedly too.

As soon as the door opened, sparkling lights appeared, and mirrors covered every direction. My child danced while looking in the mirrors and had such a great time. Since we were the only people entering, it even felt as though we had this media world all to ourselves.

What is the 360-degree giant-screen show like?

After being in the area with all the different lights, we came down the stairs and a spectacular media art show appeared. I had never seen such a huge screen in my life. The show runs for about 30 minutes. The entire 360-degree space is a giant screen, with Jeju's grand natural scenery and dazzling graphics constantly changing. My child watched, completely absorbed, and the adults lost track of time too.

Even without 3D glasses, a robot moved as if it were really right in front of us. My child even tried to catch it with their hands, and the dimensional footage was so fun.

It showed Jeju's beautiful scenery through spring, summer, fall, and winter, and the views of Hallasan were especially wonderful. Seeing Hallasan in winter made me want to visit again in winter for sure.

At the very bottom, you can look up at the screen from below, and its grandeur was truly overwhelming. My child stared at it for a long time, clearly fascinated, then ran around happily. Touching the screen changed the colors, so my child ran around touching it and absolutely loved it.

Dolhareubang photo zone and final retro items

There is another path beside the giant screen, and if you go that way, you will find a dolhareubang (Jeju stone grandfather statue) photo zone. The dolhareubang's eyes move, which fascinated my child. It is a great place to get that perfect photo.

Lastly, there were school bags hanging up that parents used in their younger days. My parents were fascinated too, wondering how these bags still existed... There were enjoyable things to see everywhere for both parents and children. Nohyeong Supermarket in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, was convenient to visit because it is near the airport, and it was a satisfying place because both my child and parents enjoyed it.
